Hi,
New here, and to snake keeping, but my son was adamant he HAD to have a snake. We've only had baby Eric for a week and a half, but love him to bits.
So I'll no doubt be popping in here for tips and advice.

Thanks everyone!
It was the first real opportunity for pics today as we hadn't been handling him to give him time to settle in... then feed & digest time.

Hi Matts_Mum (and Matt)! Welcome to the forum. You will find that this is a great place with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also gets lots of fun and friendship as a bonus . Not sure what you already know about snakes, so apologies for if I am telling you stuff you already know, but better told twice than not at all.
I am so glad you were told the one-week no handling rule. It is so vitally important and so few people get told it. It is always a frustrating time, cos all you want to do is handle your snake, and must have been especially hard for Matt...so well done for keeping to it! Considering you have only just started to handle him it looks as though he is very calm, which is great. Your son looks as though he is doing a good job with him too.
The care sheet on here is very good (http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm), lots of information for new snake owners. You can also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133
No question asked on this forum is a silly question .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! Use the search option in top right corner to get information and if you cant find the answer there then ask!! Unfortunately pet shops often give 'questionable' advice , so please check out on here anything you are told just to make sure that what they have said is right.
I hope when you got Eric you got as much info as possible....shedding history, feeding history etc. Start your own 'Snake Diary', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and silvesta poo !
You have already complied with the unwritten forum rule- pics as soon as possible! Well done!
A warning - Keeping corns is very addictive....most of us start out with one and the lucky ones move on from there while others who are not so lucky try to contain their jealousy!! You are going to be wanting your own snake very very soon!
xxx

Thanks Kellog, yes got lots of info on and offline before buying, and from the reptile shop. I checked out a couple of places, one I wasn't impressed with despite him being quite popular in our town... told me I didn't need a thermostat, was probably overfeeding but they eat it anyway, how someone had brought in an adult corn that was cold and lethargic... then sold it on the same day for £70 (Is it just me or is that not very responsible, either to the snake OR the new, possibly unaware, owner?)
We've already started the diary of feed, shed, poo, lol. Only thing we haven't done yet is weigh him. I have some digital scales, so should I put him in a bowl with some kitchen towel and weigh him in there? My scales tend to be more accurate with something with a base surface that doesn't hang over the side (as his feed RUB would) and would keep him more contained.
Hmmm, I'm already checking out all the other morphs as Eric is likely to become mine if I dont. I never had a dislike of snakes, but seemed to think it was an unrealistic idea when my son started asking around 6 months ago, but decided to start looking into it, visiting a few places, lurking in forums like this one, reading the care sheets, etc lol. But now I luuurve Eric too, hehe!
Just a shame all my colleagues think I'm mental and cringe when I talk about him! One colleague gets on really well with my son as I see her outta work, but she is particularly grossed out about Eric, but my son told me to tell her he'll have to reconsider their friendship if she doesn't love Eric too.
Edited to add - just weighed him, 20grams, is that about right? Not sure exactly how old, but 19" long. |

So good to hear of someone doing their research before buying their snake. All too often we hear of people just walking into a shop and walking out with a snake without knowing the first thing about looking after it. You are definitely the sort of corn lover we like!!

Definitely agree with you about that shop being dodgy, but unfortunately too many pet shops are. They either dont have the specialist knowledge needed, are just after your money or just dont care ! At least you knew how important it was to have a thermostat so as soon as they said that you didnt need one you knew to walk out and never come back! Is strange that they were overfeeding cos usually keep them on a maintenance diet, which means feed them as little as possible to keep their overheads down. There is no way that adult corn should have been sold like that...it makes me so cross ! The biggest worry is that it was sold to someone who isnt like you, who knows nothing about snakes and will have no idea what to do if there is a problem. I do hope you have a shop near you that you feel you can trust...but remember to check everything you are told there with us .

Very glad you have already started your snake diary, it really is helpful. I weigh my snakes in a shoe box with air holes in the lid. Put box on scales (with lid on), zero scales. Add snake and weigh. You could definitely try doing it in a bowl as he is only small. May be an idea to weigh bowl and a pillow case (or something similar but smaller), zero it...then put Eric in pillow case and in bowl and weigh. This will keep him calm and give him less chance to escape.
Hmmm, I'm already checking out all the other morphs as Eric is likely to become mine if I dont. I never had a dislike of snakes...... But now I luuurve Eric too, hehe!
Why am I not surprised by this comment !! We will wait in anticipation for your next addition. I shouldnt really recommend this site cos it is dangerous , once you have been on it you come away with a shopping list of morphs you want next - http://iansvivarium.com/cornmorphs.php Just a shame all my colleagues think I'm mental and cringe when I talk about him....
This happens a lot unfortunately, which is why we all find solace on the forum with other snake lovers. But you would be surprised how people change their mind about snakes once they have actually seen one, seen it handled, touched it...just take it very slowly and gently with your collegue and I am sure she will come round, especially if your son's friendship with her is at stake!

Well I've weighed him now Kellog, he's 20g. I used a heavy glass bowl with plenty of kitchen roll covering the cold surface, and yep, zeroed the scales.
I've put a few pics of Eric in the photo forum if you wanna check him out!
Oh, and yes, the shop I eventually got Eric from is just as close to me as the other one. I did go to a local breeder, but he no longer breeds, just keeps his own pets nowadays due to health issues.
Hmmm, the link you gave for iansvivs is one I already keep looking at, hehe. |

I have the same problem with friends and family Matts_Mum. I'm sooo excited about Alice and am getting a bit of a snake bore but nobody else apart from these guys wants to hear it. I too have been looking at Iansviv and creating a shopping list. Alice is my sons snake and I now want one of my own - at least one. Alice is about to get moved from her faun into a bigger viv so I need to have something to put in the faun lol. |

Hahaha... that was my thinking, that I'd need something to put in the faun when Eric grows, or are we just making excuses for ourselves? Hmmm... I'm thinking Butter, Caramel, or Anery Ghost, what about you?
Anyway, they bore me with dogs, lol, like I told them "You still have to go out at night and walk your dogs in this awful weather, we can just sit in the warm and look how pretty the snake is!" |

Excuses? Me? I don't know what your talking about lol. It seems we may be along the same lines, I like Butter, caramel, anery, ghost, lavender. I am really taken with the motley markings as well.
Unfortunately I can also be a dog bore. It comes with being a foster carer and having various dogs coming through the house lol. |
