Hey guys so im new here so like to say hi :) so my dads had a set up for 2 royal pythons years ago but i decided i wanted to get my self a corn snake as starters but i want to get a baby as they will live longer and you get longer to know their temperament i should imagine. So im setting up the vivarium and have priced it up but i am not sure on what to do, i don't wish to buy a small vivarium and then have to up the size as i will need to up the size later on so i would like to ask for some help and suggestions on the product, again just an addition to the vivarium size, i am only 17 and don't have a massive amount of money so i would like a large enough size to keep the corn snake for a while :)
I have been looking at the following 2 vivarium set-ups and even crossing items between them;
http://www.reptilecentre.com/files_corn_snake_set_up_adult http://www.reptilecentre.com/files_corn_snake_set_up_baby
I am unsure on if buying the large vivarium set-up would effect the corn snake atall? i have read that having a large vivarium and hide outs can effect the snake in different ways but it doesn't specify what sizes can effect it. So could anyone help me with my set up?
i know the temperature for the set-up etc. but im not sure as i know i will need a water bowl if i buy the large set-up and another cave/bed in the cool side for the snake to hide in, any help would be greatly appreciated as i wish to buy the products off that website as that is where i will be buying my food from,
Regards, Jamie |

I think almost everyone on this site would recommend that you get a faunarium instead of a viv because they are far too big for such a small snake as a hatchling, if you would like to buy the full sized vivarium you would be better off getting a young adult. I hope this helps. Tiffany-x |

Hi,I'm not an expert but I have a hatchling myself and he's in a faunarium. I've bought him a viv for when he's older and I can honestly say if I put him in there he'd look lost and would be hard to keep track of. Have trouble finding him in the faun at times when he's curled up as it is! Speaking of lost,cornsnakes are known escape artists which is another reason a hatchling is better off in a faun. Heard of more than a few that have escaped through the sliding glass in their vivs.
Good luck with everything.
Ps. I use a toilet roll tube on the cool side for Loki. Great if you're watching the pennies. |

just had a fast look and a Faunarium seems cool, i have had a look at a couple of websites and found alot, not sure what sizes i would want but i have found the following website with a couple on, btw thanx for the fast replies :) at the price of those i can afford to buy one and the viv for later on :)
http://www.ukpetsupplies.com/Details.aspx?ProdId=1230&CatId=1012&ParentId=1012
I just need to go through products to go inside now depending on the size that people recommend, and as this is my first and my parents aren't exactly happy i need to get it right so all experiences and recommendations are extremely helpful :) |

the large flat fauns are probably the best as they will last snake longer, have a look at the care sheet on the home page, that gives you all the basics and what kit you will need for keeping your snake.
The setup for the hatchling you don't need the lights and fittings, the mat is sufficient for the snakes heating. Also you would need another hide this one only comes with one. The dial thermometer you can use as a paperweight they are useless, best getting a digital thermometer.

that stat should be fine. you will still need a digital thermometer, and the 7 inch heatmat should be fine for a large faun.
you can always chuck some loo roll tubes in as well. just to fill it up a bit if you want. |

looks fine to me, but may check the actual sizes before you buy that. You dont want to go getting something that wont fit in |

ive found some cleaning products and a digital thermometer ao hopefully i will be all set for a while :) not sure how long this set up would last though |

will do :) im looking at a corn snake for perhaps a year or 2 and then getting a royal python as my dad is driving me nuts for one :) any suggestions on how to store the frozen mice without using a large house hold freezer? i was looking at getting a mini cooler which Cools up to 18-20 deg C below ambient temperature. do you think this would be able to store the food, i am looking at buying the following food

Wow thats well cheap, will bookmark that for the future!
Sorry I can't help about the freezer bigJME. How come you're unable to use a freezer? My girlfriend wasn't too happy about it but I have the mice in a bag, in a sealed tupperware box and then in a plastic bag! She didn't mind too much then. |

my mother hates any type of small animal that resembles mice. such as mice, rats, ginuea pigs anything atall really, she has a major fear of them so its more of a keep them in the freezer up the shed or buy a mini freezer for in my room lmao
so ive priced up the entire set up for £100 now :) new pet store just opend at the top of my road selling 10 pinkies for £3 which is brilliant for me as i would hate to have to order them and have deliveries coming in all the time :) i believe its every 3 - 5 days i will need to feed my corn snake so 10 will last me a while :) i think i may be able to get away with putting the pinkies in a plastic tub, like they sell some curries or take aways in and store them in there then wrap in a plastic bag |

just priced my set up at £102 and im estimating a hatch-ling corn snake at around £50, does anyone else live near Wolverhampton? wondering if anyone else has any experience of buying snakes from holly bush as they have loads but im not sure if they are friendly as they don't get any attention :) not sure if that would effect it |

Um can I just say if you buy everything you need you can get it for about 60 quid from blue lizard with a selection of cheap options. So if you get a large flat faun, mat, stat, thermometers and substrate, you can use plastic plant pots for hides (about a quid for like 5 or 10) and loo roll tubes as other suggested and something like a coffee lid for a water bowl and if you have a dunelm near you you can get very cheap plastic plants there. There is a thread somewhere from very recently where i asked similair questions, I recommend you have a look for it. Tiffany-x |

Hi,its good you've got somewhere close to to get snakeys food from. Only a beginner myself,but I think the norm feeding routine for hatchlings is every 5 to 7 days. I've no experience of the store you mention,but I know hatchlings are supposed to be a bit nervous to begin with anyway. Not sure how much Loki was handled but he's calmed down a lot in the weeks I've had him. Ps.my pinkies are stored in the chest freezer in the shed. Cheaper than buying another freezer |

thank you tiffany and you mort :) i dont have an issue with money on this really, im willing to spend up to £200 on the set-up alone so i can afford to buy everything :) all my products have been priced up from blue lizard and include the following set up;
Large Faunarium Medium Water Bowl Aspan Bedding Heat Mat 2xSmall Hide Out Combo-meter Cleaner Small Plant Feeding Tongs Thermostat
but i mean i can keep alot of that when i need the larger tank which is brilliant :) im going to set up the faunarium a week before buying the snake so i can monitor the temperature and ensure that its correct :) will post a picture or 2 of the set-up before and after i get my snake :) off to look for some colours tomorrow, im hoping to get a black corn snake as its easier to see along side green and brown :) do i still need a light for the top of the faunarium or will the corn snake be fine with no lights on during the night as i have a pretty dark room |
