If you go 3 miles south from the North pole and then walk either west or north you will always be 3 miles south of the north pole. Pick up a ball or an apple or something to visualise it.

cornsnakejames what have you done!! I think I get it now anyway, I re-read the riddle and it said you then turned to face north and walked 3 miles, at this point I kept visualising going straight up as thats where north usually is then after realising your campsite was on the north pole I guess to turn north you would walk kinda diagonal to it!! well got there in the end very good keep em coming if you dare!!
