Can you post a pic of your set up. Is the tank plastic, glass or a wooden vivarium?

If a heatmat is covering the whole floor area it doesnt provide an area for the snakes to cool off. They need this because they cannot control their own body temperature.

If the tank is plastic or galss, just place the heat mat down on a table, then lift the tank and put it ontop of the mat so that one third of the floor will be heated. If its a wooden viv you should have no trouble finding the a mat of a suitable size.

Ahh I know where my snakies cool off; there is a gap between the background and grill on the roof they slither up there and sit there and cool off there, always seem sluggish when theyr'e up there.
I can get a photo of set up and you mean have the heatmat on the outside of the viv?

The stat you have linked to is fine for the job, thats what myself and many others use. The thermometer you have linked to is a dial one, they are pretty inaccurate, I would go with this (digital is better):

You can have one for the cool end and one for the warm end, I personaly only use 1 on the warm side.

Ahh, its an exoterra. Is your heatmat inside it? What are the dimensions and how long are the snakes?

I would take the mat out, and put it underneath the tank so it covers one third of the floor.

The heat will still go through, but you might have to make the layer of substrate thinner. The problem is though, without a thermomter you can check it.

Take the mat outside, and put it underneath the tank so that it covers one third of the floor space. Check with you hand that it feels slighly warm ontop of the substrate after.

yeah it will but you would need to tape it to the glass underneath, i have an exo-terra and it works fine underneath.

It will take 30mins, and could potentialy save the lives of your snakes, if it was me I would be changing it asap. It wont take up any more space as the mat will only be underneath.

having bad thoughts about that move, the catch on the top on my viv the one in the bottom left corner is rather wobbly and when pushed from below opens quite a gap... ideas?

As you have nothing to measure the temp with (or maintain it), you cant assume its right or wrong.

Whats loose? You mean the little cable holes?
