Hi...... ideally you want to create a temperature gradient of about 21ºC - 30ºC. Slight differences wont matter, Lilas viv is about 31ºC hot end and 23ºC cool end during the day.
Important to place your thermostat and thermometer probes on top of the substrate, preferably under the snakes hides, to get an accurate reading of where your snake will be.

I havent got a stat or thermometer but my corns are rather clever i think theyv'e learnt as I've never had a stat or thermometer. the mat is on the whole bottom of the tank as its only 1 square foot. They burrow UNDER the mat to get their heat :) |

PS. Do you want to see some pics of snakes that have come into contact with a faulty heatmat?
Just because they haven't burrowed yet and your mat hasn't had a surge yet....
Is it worth the risk for the cost of a £20 matstat? |

I would advise that you get a stat and thermometer asap. Its such a risk to take to not use them. |

You dont need a new mat. A stat just plugs into the wall and the mat plugs into the stat. A thermomter is a totaly seperate uint and will be a small box with a display with a cable coming out of it with a pribe on the end.
Both things will cost no more than £30 |

The size of the viv doesnt matter, both units can go outside of it. In the viv you should have a thermal gradient of about 22*C-28*C. So on one side its 22, the other its 28. To acheive this you want 1/3 of the viv floor in contact with a heat mat (on a stat, with the temps measured by a thermometer). |

The heat mat should be only under one third of his viv, if he has no cool end to escape to when hes too hot, your going to have a very unhappy snake and you really need to get a stat asap |

No, just put the mat down, and place the tank so that 1/3 of it is over the mat. |
