The Japanese Akita's are so much prettier than the American ones.. I think it's the fluffyness :3

It isn't advised that you let akitas off the lead, because they can become very dog agressive and will fight to the death if needs be. Sasha ont he other hand is a complete **** house, she jumps if a jack russell or yorkie bark at her. You can tell she has got the hunting instinct though. In japan the where used to hunt big game such as deer and bear.

Akitas are also an indoor dog, because they are so familly orientated. Apparently they do ok living outside but often become totally different dogs because they don't have an owner and a familly around them all the time. In the 3 months that we have had her she has certainly become part of the family.

I remember when we were looking on the internet and all the websites were saying how familly orientated akitas are and how loyal they are to their owners. Apparently they don't need training to become guard doggs because they are very protective of their owners and because of this need socialising at a young age.
Where as all the websites were saying about huskies is that they are lovely dogs that love to run away and are expert escape artists lol.

The one thing the husky did have going for it is that they are quite a bit smaller than akitas.
I said i only wanted a husky if it was black and white with blue eyes, but apparently it reminded my mum of demon off snow dogs so that kind of swung it for an akita too. I got my way in the end though hehe.

Edit - Ooo sorry for swearing lol.

Oh and as for the American Vs Japanese thing it was the face and the attitude that swung it for me, well i say swung it i wanted a japanese one from the start but they look so much nicer with the white face. Plus american akitas are a mixture of Japanese akita, german shepard and another breed i think and were originally bred for fighting.

People basically saw how strong and loyal the japanese akita was and tried to cross breed it to make a bigger version and ended up with the american akita.

Infact in America they don't see the difference, an Akita is an Akita, kind of silly to me like have a pitbull terrier and a yorkshire terrier and saying a terrier is a terrier.

Sasha is absolutely gorgeous Danny . I do wish I was in the position to have a dog like that - although my first choice would immediately be the GSD as they are what I grew up with. But just dont have the room or the health to look after a big dog so it isnt fair on them.

I have always had mongrels, and usually rescued collie crosses. I have been amazed at how healthy they are compared to so many pedigree dogs - I dont think we had any vet visits until they got old.

Am now dogless for the first time in my life and I hate it....but it is a big decision to get another dog and certainly couldnt do the puppy thing. I guess time will tell....

Like you say Danny, they do the protecting without any training but they do need lots of socialising and need to be aware of their low status in the pack if you don't want a thug!!
She is lovely tho ;)

Yer, its normly when they get to around the 6 month mark they start testing the water so you just have to stomp on it straight away.

You cant stay angry at her though not when your shouting at her and she howls haha.
I havn't heard her bark yet which is normal apparently as they only bark when they think there is something wrong, but she does some pretty awesome howls. And she talks lol. its somewhere inbetween a howl and a grwol lol but yer she talks. It says on the internet that they often make funny noises though haha.

Judith, we weren't sure wether we wanted another dog after losing our rottweiler in November to cancer. It was so devastating when it happened but the house did feel empty without her so 2 months later we started looking into another dog and we ended up with sasha.
