Hi all I was wondering what the opinion is on feeding a near fully grown corn. Is it best to feed a jumbo mouse every 10 days, or a large mouse every week? Opinions please. Glyn |

Its best to guage what your snake needs on weight. Here is a rough feeding guide I have found using the search function (top right) but remember it is only a ROUGH guide
1 Pinkie: 1 to 5 days old (0.5 - 3g) - feed every 5 to 6 days (Snake = 4-15g) 2 Pinkies (3-4g) – feed every 5 to 6 days (Snake = 16-23g) Small Fuzzy: 6 to 13 days old (3 - 6g) – feed every 6 to 7 days (Snake = 24-30g) Fuzzy (7-9g) – feed every 6 to 7 days (Snake = 30-50g) Fluff/Hoppers: 2 to 3 weeks old (7-12g) - feed every 6 to 7 days (Snake = 51-90g) Small Adult/Weaned: 3 to 4 weeks old (13-18g) - feed every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g) Large: 4 to 6 weeks ((19 to 25g) – feed every 7 to x days (snake = 170g+) X large: 6 months + old (350 +) – feed every 10 to x days (Snake = 170+)
Cheers

If we are talking maintenance diets then there is a lot of variation in opinion-
Casper (7yo, 5 foot 6) gets 1 XL mouse every 2 weeks Mushu (nearly 4 years old, approx 4 foot) gets a large every 10 days.
However, you could feed 1 medium a week, and it probably wouldn't make a difference.

I didn't know there was a difference between a large mouse and a jumbo mouse. Here they have small mice and then large mice and from there they go to small rats.[quote]Originally posted by ukglyn

Have a good look for xl/ex-breeders for when/if Snickers needs 'em, rats are bad for corns. |

it also depends on their sex and if they're breeding.........
breeding females will need feeding more than males as creating and laying eggs is a huge strain on their resources (although some will still choose to fast!)
my adult females whether breeding or not this year will get 1-2 medium mice weekly (offered 2, occasionally only take 1) and my males get a large/XL mouse every 10-14 days
as has already been suggested, monitoring weight is probably the most effective way of gauging feeding as body condition scoring in snakes isn't exactly accurate! lol |

Just to give you a rough idea...Kellog is approx 4 and a half years old, 4'6" long, weighs just over 700g. At the moment he is on a jumbo mouse (approx 40g) every 10 days but I will probably move him to every fortnight soon and monitor his weight closely...see if he maintains it or loses or keeps gaining...and then decide what I need to do.
It would definitely help knowing more about the age and length of your snake...but more importantly the weight.

Right ok, Axl is about 4ft 6in & weighs in at 470g, he is around 3 years old, I have been feeding him a large mouse every week, & was wondering if an xl every 10-14 days would be better. There is no problem with him feeding & shedding as he is, but was just toying the idea the other night. Hope that info helps. Glyn |

I vary my adults. They still have the appropriate size mouse for them, but the days differ. Instead of every 10 days or something like that, I might go something like 7 days, then 10, then 8, then 15, then 11 and so on.
