| hi...my 2 year old male corn snake seems to of started making a kind of whistling noise when he exhale now and again...any ideas why this could be......nick |

| the temp in the enclosure is around 26 one end and around 20 in the other. my snake only seem to do this whistling breathing noise when he is out of the vivarium...nick |

Signs of respiratory infections (RI) in snakes are often the same as those in people, wheezing,sneezing,mucus from the nose and mouth, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, lethargy and being able to hear a rattling noise when holding the snake. It is possible to treat mild RI's at home by providinh a warm dry viv, raise the temperature to the higher end of the snakes natural range, thsi is like giving the snake an artificial fever to aid in fighting off germs, as with other disorders, isolate the snake, and keep stress to a minimum. there's a slim possibility it's loose skin in his nasal passages if he's due a shed very soon BUT it sounds like an RI to me. Probably caused by temps that are too low so reduces the snake's resilience to infections. you only notice the wheeze outside the viv because (i imagine) you don't sit inside his viv listening to him............
exactly as hiper said above really, just to reiterate:
try raising the temps to 28*C cool end and 32*C warm end for 2 or 3 days, this effectively will give him a 'fever' to kill the bug causing the RI. give him a diagonal branch to perch on with his head lower than his body to drain mucous and try nebulising some F10 disinfectant.
the alternative approach, and the way to go if the above doesn't work, is a trip to your local exotics specialist vet for a course of Baytril or similar antibiotics. |

Hi Nick.... try as suggested as if he has only just started to make these sounds it's likely that its an RI... however, I have a snake that 'squeeks' occassionally when he's using us as an oversized tree branch... I took him to the vet when we first had him to get him checked out for an RI, but he was perfectly clear.... we've now come to the conclusion this is just part of him... no idea what causes it, but does not seem to affect him in any other way..... maybe he thinks he's a part time mouse!
