So Linguene is going into a 3ft viv.
What I want to know is, instead of getting one bigger heat mat, can I use 2 small ones running them both on the same stat but with separate digital thermometers. |

| In theory, you could if the mats were identical but personally, I wouldn't do it. I think of my thermostat as a failsafe for malfunction as well as a temperature control. If the heat mat which did not have a stat on it malfunctioned or short-circuited (very unlikely, but still a possibility) there would be nothing to make it cut out apart from the fuse in the socket. That is enough of a reason in my opinion to splash out on a larger heat mat as they are not very expensive. |

I'll probably get the big mat.
But, if both mats are running through the same stat it would cut out or am i missing something in my logic? |

I'm not sure they would both cut out if there was only one stat. If there's only one stat, there's only one probe. If the mat without the probe on it developed a fault and started overheating, the stat would only cut out if the fuse in the socket was affected as the probe wouldn't detect the increase in heat. Or that's the way I look at it, but I am a bit of a safety nut after seeing photos of someone's shop burned down by a faulty heat mat (eek!).
Some people choose to use just one stat on a stack of vivs, as if the mats are all identical, in theory the heat output should be very similar. But I wouldn't choose to do that myself, all my mats (and the gecko's ceramic) have their own stat and their own digital thermometer which can get expensive but makes me feel safer  |

Moppet has made some very good points Stephen. When you think about how things are set up the thermostat probe will be resting on one heatmat and connected to only one, which means that the mat that isn't connected to the stat isn't controlled by it and won't be turned off if there is an issue. The probe can only rest on one mat so the other mat will be running virtually independently. Apologies if that doesn't make sense or is totally wrong, it's a brain-fog morning  .
Also, as you've said, you'd need two digital thermometers, one monitoring each heatmat. I'm the same as Moppet, personally I'd rather spend the extra money and have one heatmat or a separate thermostat for each mat.

Yeah. I'm in agreement. Wanted to pose the idea before doing something potentially harmful.
New mat to be ordered so Linguene can move house.
