Hi Guys, I've not posted much since joining but am always on here looking at everyone's great pictures and trying to learn things.
I have a quick feeding related question for you.
My son's Carolina Corn has been with us since Christmas now and I think was about 6 months old when he got him. He has been doing really well, just shed for the 4th time since being with us and is bang on with his feeding. He was been on fluffies for the last 8-10 weeks and I finally got round to buying some scales at the weekend.
He is currently 51g.
I know the Munson plan is used as a guide by most and according to that he should be just about ready to move up to hoppers. I have a about a dozen fluffies still in the freezer though so was wondering if it would be ok to double him up for a few weeks until they are all gone? The ones left are the smaller ones from the batch I bought so I'm thinking it should be fine, but I don't want to over feed him so thought I'd ask quick.
Thanks for your help. |

I've got two young'uns about 60g, they're on large fuzzies/fluffies/whatever. Mine wouldn't manage hoppers yet. Get one and see what you think with your boy, you don't really want to feed anything bigger than 1.5 times his width. Do the fuzzies leave a lump when they're swallowed or not? If yes, I'd keep him on fuzzies for a little while longer, if no, by all means double up for a while then offer a hopper. |

Hi, thanks for your reply. To be honest I don't think the fluffies/fuzzies leave him with much of a lump at all really. He's our first snake so it's down to my judgement I guess but he seems to be getting bigger every time we get him out. He would definitely take another.
I knew he was only just into possible hopper size, I guess I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be over feeding with 2. As I said, the ones left are smaller anyway so I'll double him up for a couple of weeks and try a hopper afterwards.
Thanks again. |

I'm guessing hopper is the same as small mouse.
If it is, when I changed Linguene the shop checked and gave me the mice from the smaller end. The size range seems to vary quite abit.
Last time I got some I was off the ball and forgot to ask for "small" small mice and they were all bigger. but decided to go with it. Linguene demolished it no problem.
I was also in a position that I had some fuzzies left so based on posts here and what my pet shop told me I just gave him double for a couple of weeks. |

Hi rumdemon, good name ! Dont worry i'm the same: on here all the time but hardly ever post, it's such a useful forum. I never really knew what sizes i was feeding just always pick mice that are a bit bigger than the fattest part of the snake. I found fingers are a useful size comparison until the snake gets bigger than the thumb and by then the mice are large or extra large. I know if its not enough because she will stay out looking for food after eating, when she's full it's straight to bed ! |

I'm glad you're finding the forum so helpful Joel . Quite a lot of us do double feeds of fluffs before moving our snakes on to small mice and then you only feed singles. There is thinking behind doing double feeds, that it gives the snake an extra boost of calcium etc when it needs it because it's growing fast.
Different places do call different mice sizes different things. That's a lot of 'different' ! As far as I can tell most of the time when the term hopper is used it is the same as small mice, although some places call fluffs hoppers. Just to confuse you there is also a category called jumpers that seems to come between fluffs and small mice .
There is also a difference as to what weights fit into each category but generally small mice/hoppers are around 10 - 15g. If you have a helpful pet shop where you get your mice from, once you've used up the fluffs you could ask to look through their hoppers/small mice and choose the smallest ones, slowly building him up.
Hope that helps . Please don't hesitate to ask more questions. We don't bite, much . You do realise that pictures of your snake are compulsory ....

Thanks all, very useful and confirms that my thinking was pretty sound too so all good!
I'll double him us for the next 3 or 4 weeks and then try him on hoppers/small. The guy at the shop I go to is very helpful so I'm sure he'd pick me out smaller ones.
I'm a bit rubbish at photos but I took one of him the other day, all freshly shed, so I'll add it to the pictures section.
Thanks Joel |

You're welcome Joel. It's what we're here for . Always good to have our own ideas/impressions/opinions reinforced.
So glad you got a photo of Snape. He's gorgeous. Such strong colours.
