Hi everyone, I'm new to snake keeping and have read pretty much every post on this forum for advice :-)
I have a question though... I've had my snake Archie for just over two months, he has shed twice and eats well, but he has only ever pooped twice in his viv!
A few times he pooped on me when I took him out to play, so I've started putting him in his rub with kitchen roll and a cardboard hide my son made for him. He mooches around for a few minutes, does a poop, then I handle him after. It works out beautifully!
But when I mentioned it to my brother, who has had his snake for 18 months, he just laughed and said I'm being daft!
Could Archie just be more comfortable doing his business out of his viv, or am I missing something and he's scared and literally pooping himself lol! I usually handle him every day, for 15 -20 mins.
Any opinions welcome :-)
xx

I find the movement tends to get things going if they haven't already gone. Usually mine move around outside the viv a lot more than inside, and they'll poop soon after coming out. You learn to tell the signs (stopping and staring, lifting tail) and it's easy to slip a bit of kitchen roll underneath them. Nothing to be concerned about, I'd be grateful for the clean viv lol

Thank you SilverWings, I think you're right, it must be the movement and exercise. He loves exploring so its nice to know he's already pooped and I won't find any presents in my sleeve, under the pillow etc!

I must admit that a few of my snakes are like yours Laura. They rarely do a poo in their viv and if they do it's usually because I haven't handled them much. Handling them certainly seems to 'bring it on' and I soon got used to the signs of when they were going to do something. Then it's a case of having kitchen roll within reach and getting it in position to 'catch' what comes out .

I'm like Silverwings, I'd much rather they did it outside of their vivs and kept them nice and clean, even if it means me taking a risk of being messed on .

Im convinced that I potty trained Sybil as well ;)
She doesnt like to go in her faun either and will dance up the sides to get my attention (either that or its coincidence and I take that as her wanting out to poop but its really just all the moving that has caused the pooping and she was just trying to find the escape hole.)

I prefer her pooping out the faun cos I can get rid of it so easily and the smell doesnt linger lol. She has only pooped on me once, that I can remember, and even that wasnt her fault. I quickly put my hand under her when I realised she was gonna poop and I had her over my duvet on the bed with no towel or kitchen roll to hand, I would rather my hand than my duvet!

Stanlee has pooped on me twice now . I thought they only pooped once after a feed? He got fed on Thursday and pooped on Saturday. Then when I had him out on Sunday he done it again! My cream carpet nearly got it lol thankfully due to Saturdays mishap I knew what to look for! Is that normal for a corn or could he have been bunged up from the week before ? There was defo no poop last week! :)

Linguine done exactly the same to us. pooped in the viv. Got him out next day and he went again. On the Mum in-laws bag (lol).
Then the next day while my partner was handling him or watching him on the carpet he went again.
I think they do it deliberately. Lull you into a false sense of security.

Some snakes poop more than others I have one snake that only goes once every 3 weeks, no matter how regularly she is fed. She holds it even longer when she's shedding - that is quite nasty... I have another who when she was younger, she would go sometimes 3 or 4 times for each feed! Also, if they are young or skittish about being handled I think the nervousness can bring it on as well as the movement
