He's here, but no pics yet as he's been hiding since we got home His 'set up' is rather basic, with not much to it at all. I threw the heat mat away as it looked dangerous, digital thermometer has the wire cut off. He's a one year old harlequin, and currently in a 30 x 30 x 45 cm exo terra type glass viv. Will this do him for a while, or best to replace it now for something bigger? He has a couple of long sticks, and one large plant to hide behind. His hide looks too small for him too. I've ordered a magnetic shelf and magnetic double feeding shelf for him. I'll get a new heat mat, stat and digital humidity and thermometer for him too. Where should the heat mat be placed? I've read they don't like under viv heat, so best on the back wall? He's come with no information whatsoever, the seller wasn't there and her relative sorted it out (she was supposed to be there and relatives didn't even know he was being collected). I don't even know how to pick him up, but have read to give him a couple of weeks to settle in before attempting to handle him. Anyway, he is lovely and I plan to make a very interesting home for him to live in |

wow, not the best seller. Side or back for the matt, mine is in the bottom as she sleeps in her shedding stump, and when its really cold as my room is freezing in the day, gets a side one also. The size is ok. and just pick him up, then put on your other hand, just be prepared for crazy jumping! will need to settle in first though, but 2 weeks? wow i couldnt do that !! look forward to the pics |

Poor little crestie. At least he's in a good home now he's come home with you Sounds like more cover inside his tank would be better for him too, poor little guy. |

Thanks SBB, I'll put the heat mat on the side or back depending on where everything else fits. He came out of hiding late last night, so at least I got a glimpse of him I'd like to buy a canopy for the tank for UV lighting, not sure which bulb to get for it though? |

Congratulations on collecting your Crestie I personally would not keep him too long in the 30x30x45 exo terra, I have been told by many people on forums on fb that the 45x45x60 exo is the minimum for an adult crestie (but have also heard it is ok for a trio of cresties). I am in the middle of setting up a live planted 45x45x60 for Ludo's final home, so buying a canopy for your 30x30x45 would be dependant on your own views and whether you move the little one up a size of viv and thus would need a larger canopy. Hope this helps and I'm looking forward to pics once the little one has settled |

Thanks for that BC I'm now thinking I should just start from scratch and get a whole new bigger exo terra for him. I'm still waiting on his things to arrive, and as it's nice weather I haven't worried too much about no heat mat for now,but will feel better when his hygrometer arrives and I can see what the humidity is in the tank. He doesn't have a moist hide at the moment, so will a plastic tub with moss in it do for now? Also, I've read tap water isn't good for them to drink or to mist the tank, any truth in that ? I've taken some pics of him, so will put them on the photos section now. |

I currently don't have a hygrometer in his 'little' home, but mist every morning and when I move him into the 'large' home there will be hydroponic clay balls in the bottom (they retain water) these will be covered by some weed membrane and then the equivalent of eco earth as substrate, so hoping humidity will be ok with out a moss hide. As for tap water, mine gets tap water and the tank misted with it too - the only thing I was told was that I would end up with 'water' marks on the glass, this is true, but I just clean it off when I do a thorough clean of the viv. I am still researching the whole uvb thing, the only thing I have come across is peoples' dislike of exo terra bulbs and that if I remember correct 5% uvb is reccommended due to the loss of some due to the mesh of the viv lid. There are some really usefull threads on RFUK Off to photo section to look for photos |
