Okay, seeing as to how I'm a complete <insert some swearword to describe someone utterly stupid> and accidentally left one of my vivs opened slightly for the second time, allowing my yearlings to get out, I'm looking for some way to alert me if the sliding door's left ajar. Does anyone know if such a system exists for vivs? I've already seen a couple of these systems for fridges, but I'm not sure those would work as my viv closes in a different way (sliding doors). Any advice is welcome!

I'm currently still in the process of turning the room upside down - sadly, this is the room where we store most of our stuff, so they could be practically anywhere. I'm lucky enough to have found one already - two to go...

Any flaming about leaving the door open is very welcome, cause I feel really, really, really stupid right now :(

Erm...Whoops. I hope you find them all.

I'm so paranoid about checking my vivs are shut properly because of all the escapes I have heard about. I still have paper binder sliders on my yearlings viv glass to make sure they can't slip out (probably can't anyway now, their heads are pretty big).

What sort of lock do you use on your vivs? Or do you use a wedge? I don't know of any alarms for vivs but maybe you could get into a routine of doing a certain type of check (dependent on your lock method) e.g. I always run my hands down either side of the doors and give them a quick push inward just to make sure the wedges are in properly

Yes there is a way of alerting you. You could buy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-LOUD-WIRELESS-MAGNETIC-BURGLAR-SAFETY-DOOR-WINDOW-ENTRY-ALARM-SENSOR-/111095176317?pt=UK_Burglar_Alarms&hash=item19ddc9dc7d

You could hot glue / superglue / silicone the magnet to the glass and the device to the other end. This would go off as soon as the magnet losses contact.

The only problem is I don't know what effect the high pitch noise would have on the snake, but I suppose it would only go for a few seconds. Its the best suggestion I have

If you are really into your DIY, you could even consider taking it to bits to make it more compact. Just be mindful of your snake.

I normally always double-check my viv doors, I'm not sure how I didn't yesterday (I could have sworn I did everything I had to - I even seem to remember double-checking o.o). Anyway, as for locks, I use the standard kind of lock (similar to this one, but another brand: https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQx0yA40dzDbeJKK7mtDIrrjpK92NyRaoLl-eIilv7cZl5hV7QIAQ) but the problem is you can lock them even when the doors aren't completely closed :(

Welsh - thanks for the suggestion :) It seems like a nice one, although I would prefer one that has a system like the fridge ones (only go off when they are left open more than x minutes). That would make sure the alarm only goes off when needed, and won't unnecesarily spook the snakes :)

Hi,

Here's a link for you to take a look at. http://www.fridge-freezer-alarm.co.uk/

You could modify the unit and get a magnetic strip either end of the glass

Good luck in finding the remaining escapees.

The fridge alarm option with time delay looks good.
