Hello all, iv posted about this problem before but recieved limited advice, partly because iv yet to hear of any other snake behaving in the same way. So, Pedro is about a year old now, when he was very young he was a nightmare when it came to feeding, it took months of experimenting to get him on a regular diet. Following the munsen plan, pedro should have been onto fuzzies ages ago, he is now well over two ft in length, and about 50g in weight. Iv tried a few times to get him onto fuzzies but he always refuses. His last ten feeds have been triple pinkies to get him used to a slightly bigger meal, which he has been fine with (although he will only take pinkies from one shop of the three nearby, weird!). Last night i tried again with a small fuzzie, only to find it untouched this morning. He is now looking like his diet is taking its toll on him. For a two foot snake his head and neck are tiny, and i mean hatchling tiny, i think his growth maybe stunted to some extent. Please please please can anyone help, The little lad has never eaten anything with a decent amount of calcium in it. I know you can get calcium powder but pedro is way to fussy to go near anything like that. Temps 23 cold, 29 hot, faunarium in quiet part of house with loads of hides, like i said, he is eating but he needs to get onto bigger meals. The only question is - how?

im sorry to hear of your trouble. It must be a stress. Could be wrong but you could try this if you have tried everything else - dont feed for a couple weeks and cover the tank with a towel when feeding, leave fuzzy with him and see what happens, you could always scent a fuzzy somehow if that would make a difference. Put calcium suppliment on regardless of his fussiness if thats what you are worried about. Also assisted feeding is an option. If absolutely everything fails im sorry. It is just one of those things that sadly cannot be helped. It's horibley stressfull for both snake and owner.
Excuse if anyone disagrees with what ive written im just trying to find diferent ways for helping if he has tried every other option. |

Tried all of the above with no luck. Have thought about assist feeding but i don't know if its appropriate for him if he's willing to eat multiple pinkies. Anyone have any further thoughts on this? |

Perhaps try some vitamin drops that go in the water, it's what I use for mine. Have you tried him on a different prey? Give rat pups a go, they're hairless like pinkies but as big (if not a bit bigger than) fuzzies. It might get him used to larger meals, and he might then think about fuzzies. |

i haven't tried rat pups before, iv seen them in my local shop and they seem massive, especially to a snake that won't even go near fuzzies. I'll buy a few tomorrow all the same. Failing that i suppose i'll go up to four pinkies, then 5 etc..... |

Is the snake excreting normal ? Is the snake Yawning excessively ? Are your temps all correct ?
Very sorry to hear you are both having such a bad time.
When the snake is taking the pinkies is it striking? How long is it taking before its actually taking the prey?

Yes i was braining the pinkies for months to get him started on them. Iv tried braining the fuzzies numerous times but still no results. Tried warming them too. It is a very odd thing isn' it. Just as weird is the fact that he will only eat pinks from one shop we go to. He won't touch them from pets at home, or the other big reptile shop nearby. He'll only eat them from a little local pet shop near us. Odd little guy or what.

He will only eat if left alone and overnight. His temps are fine and apart from his extremely small size and lack of growth he looks very healthy. Pooing fine too. |

Hmm as scary said earlier maybe you could scent the fuzzy somehow with one of the pinkies that he does eat? |

i keep the fuzzies in the bag with the pinkies in the freezer so they should be scented to some extent anyway. iv offered him a pink and a fuzz at the same time to try and entice him but he just ignored both. |

So sorry to hear it. You both must be suffering. Maybe as a last resort, grossas iit sounds, you could brain the pinky onto the fuzzy? Sorry if that's too vulgar. |

Nothing is too vulgar at this stage mate, i just want to make sure he doesn't end up on pinks for the rest of his life. I'll add it to the list of things to try, obviously it takes a while to try all these methods because of the five day wait between feeds. |

I've personally never had much luck braining anything, however I did have some success with a mouse that I split down the belly, then super-heated on my radiator. It's the only time Luna has ever struck and coiled. It made a terrible mess, so best put on a cloth or in a box. |

I think your doing the best you can. I can not offer any more suggestions. I would consider having a faecal sample, tested. Even take the little fella to a vet, they may have more idea's to the cause.
It's hard to know, what's going on. All I know is that my 1 year old corn is eating mediums and has been for a while. So its very concerning to me, to imagine him having 3 pinks.
Get him to the vet, as it seems you have attempted all other avenues. |
