I totally agree with Smartbunny, Andrea. I know you've said they are males, but sexing is not 100%....Silvi was probed as a male, but then laid eggs so obviously was a female. It just isn't worth the risk keeping them together, especially as one of them is not very healthy at the moment. Even if they are both males, there is still the risk of them fighting....as it says in the link I gave you.

How are the temperatures measured?

Well Robin looks like a normal - No-name I am a bit more stumped on as her colouring looks really unusual - she's probably just an unusual coloured normal but I'll admit I did wonder if she was a hybrid of some kind (ie 1/2 corn 1/2 a different rat snake)

Ok, let's go through what you need. You say they have heatmats....I'm assuming you mean 1 heatmat that covers part of the viv floor. Is that plugged into a thermostat or straight into the wall? It needs a thermostat to control it, as heatmats can overheat. You also need to get a digital thermometer. The temp you are getting from the dial thermometer is very inaccurate, especially as it is on the wall of the viv, not on the floor, which is where the snakes are. Both of these are vital pieces of equipment and need to be got as soon as possible.

Do you have 2 hides on each side of the viv, so that each snake can have space to go when it needs to? Obviously it would be much better to separate them but until then they each need 'their own' hide each side.

That's all I can think of at the moment.....

That sounds really bizarre to me, I've never heard anything like it. If it was me, I would turn the mats off. They need a cool end and a warm end....so should only have a heat mat on one side. If it is something that the old owner made, then it's even more worrying about how safe it is. It is better to turn off the mats and get one new mat, which covers a third of the floor area, along with a thermostat to control it and a digital thermometer to monitor it. The snakes can cope with being without the heat for the short period it will take for you to get a new one....they can't cope with the heatmats malfunctioning and burning them. Just don't feed them until this is sorted.

You can put in a couple of cardboard boxes or tubes or anything around the house that can be used as a hide, until you get more.

That's good. The sooner you deal with the mat issue, and preferably separate them, the better. No-name is quite a worry, so I'm glad they are being seen by a vet soon.

It may be a good idea for you to have a read through this thread - I know it is a hatcling setup, but all you would have to do is scale up the size and put the heatmat on the floor of the viv with a hide on top of it instead of under the faun. It explains well about where to position the thermometer probes etc. : http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878

I must admit that I'm really pleased that you've found the forum and are taking on board our advice. Unfortunately there are a lot of people like your snakes previous owner .

The thread Smartbunny has given you is a good one. This also might help - Setting up an adult corn - My 101

It's fine to have a normal bulb in the viv, as long as there is a guard around it. The snakes don't need the light but its nice for us .

Am really glad the snakes are being checked over by the vet on Monday. Does he know about reptiles? How did you get on with getting the retained shed off?

Looking at the pictures I think those 2 snakes are very lucky you have taken them in, and I am sure you will nurse them back to health successfully - I'm glad you found this forum too! :D

Doh, I hadn't realised there was an adult viv thread as well Kellog lol!

As above, they are lucky you got them - no name, the silver one ( looks a bit like a Miami phase ) looks a bit thin, and if he only weighs 362 g at his size, that seems a bit low. One of mine is 3 and a half foot and 371 g.

Just to say - if you do switch off the mats, don't feed the snakes, as they do need the heat to digest. I would be worried about the mat, too - it would be safer to pick a new mat, and a thermostat, and then you know everything is safe. I know it sound expensive, but it will be a one- off buy, and should last you for a long time.

Re hides - you don't have to buy them straight away, you can use various boxes ( cereal boxes, etc ), some people even build their own from Lego :-), upturned plant pots with an access hole made work well.. anything, just let your imagination run wild.

Also, I'd watch out for any holes in the viv, left by wires and bulbs, just in case they try to squeeze through...

Good luck with the two guys, and good on you for taking them on, and giving them a nice home :-)

yeh no-name i was told was an escape artist out of the hole he made for the bulb. but there is no guard for it tho :( . yeh half of the retain shed came off. im again doing it tonite to get rest off . he didnt seem to mind the bath so . about Robin , some1 hinted to me that he could be 1/2 corn 1/2 rat snake cos he so long in length . I have also enquired about a new viv . but im going to see the previous owner about them and ask for the other viv they had spare due to the health they left them in when they gave then to me . I Have put toilet roll holders in there too and i will find sumthing tonite to use as another hide . and On friday I will get a new heat mat , and Digital Thermometer and thermostat too . and large mice. should I leave off feeding themuntil they been to vets ?
