This morning I went to check up on the snakes as usual and found that Saphira had started laying her eggs (outside the nesting box, very much unlike her). Upon closer inspection, I noticed that she has an oviduct prolapse.

Hoping to reduce the risk of any possible infection, I've taken her out of the viv and moved her onto damp kitchen towel. I know it's risky to disturb a female while laying, but I felt the risk of leaving her in the viv was bigger. Since I moved her, she has continued to lay eggs without any problem, but the prolapse is still there. I have prepared a luke warm bath of sterile water mixed with sugar for when she's done with laying so I can hopefully get the prolapse to retract. If this fails, I'll take her to a vet asap (and even if it works, I'll probably do that to get her some antibiotics to reduce the risk at possible infection).

Has anyone experienced this before? What did you do to fix the problem and how well did it work? I'm worried sick for my little one, but there's only one reptile vet around this place and I have bad experiences with her, so I'd prefer to take the advice of experienced breeders.

Thank you in advance,

a very worried Eline

Isoldael, I have no experience of this, but I remember reading something before - the key thing was to keep the prolapsed tissue from drying out, and making sure nothing can damage or contaminate it - which is what you've done already. I suppose it's good Saphira carries on laying the eggs. If she was mine, I'd keep her quiet, there's always a chance it will go back, when she finishes laying - or has she finished now?
I'll start looking in all my books for you now - and hopefully some breeders will come and reply soon. I'm taking mine to the vets this afternoon, I see if I can ask him for you. Good luck, and hope she's ok. x

Thanks a lot, Razee. I'll continue to look after her as she finishes laying (I can see at least 3 more eggs on the way). I really really hope she'll be alright. I know we're not supposed to have favourites, but she was my very first snake and I love her to bits. Would do anything to get her to recover :(

Update: I had a small water bowl in with her, she actually moved around a bit and put her prolapse in the water. I think she felt it needed to stay nice and moist too. I know this may drown the eggs when she passes them, but at the moment I'm more worried for her than for any of the eggs.

Back from the vets - and yes, he did say, that if it doesn't go back in, you'll need to take her to the vets. I asked him about the sugar water - as I read on a forum ( cornsnakes. com ) about people using sugar water, or some using sugar directly - onto the prolapse ( the idea being the sugar makes any swollen tissue shrink, as it sucks water in ) . He said they'd used sugar on a prolapsed penis in a tortoise before, but he hasn't tried that on a female prolapse yet, so wasn't sure about that.
I suppose you could try ( when she finishes laying ), extremely gently, with a cotton bud moistened with sterile water, to very, very gently push it in, but if it doesn't - it will have to be vets...
Unfortunately, the water will most likely kill the eggs,if she lays them in, but you're right, Saphira is more important. Fingers crossed she sucks it in herself for you.

Thanks for all the advice! The prolapse got worse soon after my last post here, so I rushed her to a vet anyway (first one I called was sick, second one only works thursdays and fridays, third one was the charm). After cutting off the prolapsed part, they tried to push the eggs that were still inside her out, but to no avail. She'll have surgery tonight to remove part of her oviduct plus the remaining eggs, and possibly give her an implant to prevent any further eggs. It's gonna cost me a small fortune, but I am more worried about her and hope she will pull through...

Oh no, Isoldael, I didn't realize it was that bad, I imagined a small bit sticking out :-0 ! Now I feel like a prize idiot...
Glad the surgery went well, hope she recovers soon, and I'd have cried, too, if it was me, so don't worry. Some more virtual hugs for you and Saphira. Xx

It was a small bit sticking out at the start, but it soon got to the point where she was dragging it behind her. Even if I had gone straight to the vets, I wouldn't have been able to prevent that, sadly. I'm just glad she's alright now, and thanks for all the effort, Razee!

Here's an update on my girl. She's back home now and had her first meal. I'll need to give her antibiotics for the next 10 days, so hopefully that will keep any infection at bay. She's currently in a rub on kitchen paper, so that should help reduce the risk of infection.

I have a couple of pictures here. I won't post the actual pictures as they can be seen as quite shocking, so BE WARNED! Note that you do not need a facebook account to view the pictures:

Crikey, that looked bad... poor Saphira! But good on her that she ate, and she's lucky to have you taking care of her....
Do you have to inject the antibiotics, or put them in her mouth?

Aaaargh ( squirms ) - and I worry about sticking syringes in my snakes throat... that just puts things into perspective. But better safe, than sorry.
Do you have to keep her at certain temperature? I know some meds only work, if the snake is kept at around 28 C - I was asking my vet this( because of the wormer I have to give mine), but apparently it doesn't matter with wormers.

On a much nicer note - do you have any of the eggies in the incubator now? :-)

I don't have her on a certain temp except the temps she normally has. I have a heat mat under her (temporary) RUB and she's currently in the hide on the warm side, so I think she's regulating her own temp quite well :)

I have 12 eggs in the incubator now, but all of them look rather dented which I believe may be related to the fact that she laid them outside the nesting box. They're in a nice, humid and warm environment now, so I hope they'll get better.

As for the injections, I used to study veterinary medicine (actually, the person who operated on her was one of my teachers) so I'm used to doing stuff like that. It does feel different when it's your own animal, though...
