Blackcat I did hold off last night and she is going to get a 3g pinkie tonight. I am not bothered about the 6 day interval, I would just like to see her keep it down. Saying that (she says tempting fate), I have not had a regurge since I had her and it is the longest time she has gone without one since she was born. I can live with that for sure .
Most definitely going to take Razee's advice as to where she digests into consideration for sure as I change her water just before I feed her, then when I change her water daily I can just do a quick check to see where she is. I have put some of her flowers into each hide - HUGE hit with her! She is currently wrapped round the small sprig in her cool hide
smart bunny Ready for this one? I normally wake up about 4 - 5am. For reasons best known to me, I slept in this morning, clock change included and woke up about 7.30am. To my utter horror, Cathy's viv was open and I was just about to go into panic mode when I noticed that Mr Antibac hand gel and gloves wasn't in bed. He was sat at the dressing table with Cathy showing her her own reflection so she could look for the "other snake" in the room . He had had her out of the viv for a good 10 minutes and it took me 5 minutes after that to get him to put her back in as I don't want her too stimulated before feed night.
I do believe the words "your pet, you look after it" are now no longer valid. He wants to feed her tonight too, so I am going to show him how I choose a pinkie, weigh it and then defrost it. He has really surprised me as I really didn't think he would come round at all, never mind this quickly.
On the other hand, we have my brother in law staying with us at the moment, and I have to cover her viv when he comes in as he has an irrational fear of snakes. I have offered to help him but he doesn't want to know. Mind you, he will look at pictures of her now, so that is a start - curiosity got the better of him finally.
He was going to build her her forever home a little grudgingly. He now has sketches, ideas, you name it ready for her! We are going to buy the bits slowly so that when the time comes, it will be ready for her. Cathy is such a tart I am going to have to share her now |

Ha ha - I do like the fact, that you noticed Cathy's viv was opened, even before you realised your hubby wasn't in bed :-)

Priorities and all that
He has actually surprised me completely. He didn't have a total aversion to them (that is his brother), but was more indifferent than anything else.
Caught him red handed looking in her notebook just now, and looking at herp furniture online . He wants her to have a platform/ledge she can play on for heaven's sake!
Methinks Miss Earnshaw's big girl home is going to be quite something to behold. He even wants LED lights in it, lol!!
I did point out he could have one of his own, but absolutely not. Cathy is going to be spoiled rotten. In fairness, it might have something to do with the fact that I handed over the debit card to let him get a volcano with red lights on the blows bubbles out of it for his beloved main fish tank |

We priced it up online, with a lot of the main stuff from B&Q and it came to £48. That didn't include the vinyl I would like to put on the inside though, but did include the glass, locks and ceramic tile to use over the heat mat.
I bet you could do it yourself. When he has got his plans drawn up in a bit more of a comprehensible state (i.e. not on 2 pieces of A4 paper), I will email them to you to see what you think. There are TONS of vids on YouTube showing you how as well. As long as Cyrus has got all the room he needs, just think of the satisfaction you would have knowing you had done it yourself
Have a think about it and drop me an email if you go for it. You will probably have an easier time finding the stuff too, as funnily enough, the Isle of Man doesn't have a lot of the big stores that England does! |

Sure ill have a look was going to have a go at making a viv anyway so the plans would be awsome! The way i was going to do it is to have a piece of glass on the bottom (inside the viv) that way the heat mat has no way of burning your snake and glass makes a good insulator so in the winter it would be great :) |

Personally it doesn't surprise me at all that the first thing you noticed was Cathy's viv open, rather than your hubby sat handling her.....poor guy has been relegated to below Cathy in importance !!
I'm also not surprised that he has responded to Cathy in the way he has, even though you didn't expect it. Corns are hard to resist anyway, but with everything she's been through and the personality she has, she's irresistible The only down side is that you are going to have to share her now! I'm so pleased that not only is he wanting to handle her, but he's also wanting to learn more about her and become involved with her care....definitely not a case of "your pet, you look after it" anymore .
I do like your new category for knowing you're a snake keeper Razee .
As for your brother-in-law, I'm sure he will come round in his own time....I really can't see him remaining snake-phobic when he's 'under the influence of Cathy' ! It is something you can't force, but slowly he'll realise that she isn't anything to be scared of. My daughter's godmother used to be exactly the same. She would even change channels if a snake came on the tv. I remember us going to a zoo when my daughter was young and taking part in an interactive session where they brought round small fluffy animals for the kids to stroke....and then came a snake ! She was so brave, because she didn't want my daughter to realise how scared she was. She gave it a very quick stroke, but years later admitted that she felt the snake was watching her from the minute it came into the room to the minute it left. And this was years before we got snakes. When we did we had to cover up the vivs. Then she could cope with them uncovered. Then, when she had kids and she didn't want them having her fear, she would sit on the opposite side of the room while I had one out....and the kids love them. She'll now sit on the same sofa as me when I'm handling them, but still doesn't want to touch them. She'll get there eventually.
A few suggestions for the viv, although I expect you've already discovered these - I know quite a few people use these Trixie shelters as tables for their corns....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-Natural-Living-Shelter-30/dp/B000WFCFNI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364782585&sr=8-1
And I'm looking into replacing the bulbs in my vivs at some point, probably with these something like this....
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90192071/#
Your hubby might find this thread Viv lighting interesting.
After her start in life Miss Earnshaw deserves a life of luxury and there is NO doubt that she is going to get it !!

Oh Miss Catherine Earnshaw - you have been sent here to test me! We had a refusal last night
I have a plan. Brained pinkie in a couple of days. Going to give her a break, as per the last refusal, and then (tip from the vet for the squeamish), brain the pinkie when it is frozen with a new stanley knife blade that has been disinfected. Wednesday night seems a good break to me, does that sound good to everyone else?
Good grief, she is living up to her name, temperamental little so and so!
Kellog thank you for those links, but Ikea is a no no for us as they do not ship to the Isle of Man, nor do we have an Ikea over here. Bah!
However, I *may* have already purchased her the living table already! I haven't got any bulbs in mind for her viv, just some "cold" lighting but will definitely look into those (and guards) for her. My husband was found sketching when I woke up this morning, for "our" snake. I give up!
smart bunny If he lasts a year I will be impressed! He was doing something that took about 4 hours to do on his laptop yesterday (I think he was doing a reinstall of Windows 7) so borrowed my MacBook - that was a sight in itself as he is not used to Mac anything - and when I switched it on this morning, the history showed up reptile shows UK 2013! He even suggested we got a ball python as he knows I love them, but I think I will just stick with what I know for now!
Luke My husband has said if you tell him the dimensions that you want for Cyrus' big boy home, he will do them properly for you. Well, that means he will scribble it on a piece of paper and I will draw them up for you (I did technical drawing many many moons ago). You can do it and the satisfaction of making your main man's home would be fantastic. Just start getting bits and bobs now, and by the time he needs it it will be ready to go - leaving an empty faun . Now we couldn't possibly leave that empty in time!
And, confession time - I checked to see if she had eaten before I looked to see if my husband was in bed this morning . And then promptly woke him up to tell him she hadn't!
Quick edit - is it possible for a snow to go into blue without their eyes noticeably getting the film over them? I took the uneaten pinkie out earlier, left her for a while and got her out for morning playtime, and her belly scales seemed to be "snagging" on her towel. She doesn't seem lethargic, but seemed a little more cautious than normal. I noticed it too when she was in my hands (which surprised me as my hands are quite tough from the wheelchair).
I am not grasping at straws as to why she isn't eating - I am genuinely putting it down to her not being hungry (thank you to all for giving me that confidence) but she has eaten an awful lot since I have had her and hasn't had a shed so am wondering if she is uncomfortable in her old skin and ready for a new one. Any advice on this one would be very gratefully received

Very quick reply. As soon as I read that she had refused my immediate thought was that she was 'blue'. I don't have experience with snows but seem to remember that it can be diffucult to see whether they, and amels, are preparing to shed. Quite a few owners have come down to a shed skin and a 'new' snake without even knowing they're snake was 'blue'!! And what you've described, with her behaviour and the scales, reinforces the fact that she probably is 'blue' and that's why she refused. Means you may have to wait longer than Wed before feeding her again. Maybe go by her behaviour....if she is hiding away more and is less active, leave her be.

You have just totally reinforced what I thought. I will still get her out if she is amenable to it when I normally would, but given she has put that weight on, we can afford a little longer now if she is in blue.
She was in her cool hide and quite cool to the touch when I got her out, but seemed happy enough to warm up and is now snuggled round her beloved flowers
I don't think there is any way she could have eaten as much as she has without needing to shed for sure (in the space of time she has) |

Corno has black belly scales and it is so easy to tell when she is heading into blue as these go all grey - but that happens a couple of days before the rest of her goes dull, and it's still a few days more before her eyes go cloudy. As a result this means that with the snows (and also for me with Ember!) you miss out on the early warning these colours give. So if her behaviour changes slightly - such as her hiding away or not eating when so far she has done so well with you - I would assume she is going into shed. You have had her a for a few weeks now, and we know she has grown a bit, so I would expect her to need a shed with you fairly soon no matter what :) |

Fi, there was a thread here somewhere, about snows, and how to recognize they're going blue - but it's couple of years old, so would take some looking for.
I can tell with my two, even before they darken, because their behaviour changes first. They become more reclusive, and do lots of burrowing, sometimes lying under the newspaper ( I have newspaper under aspen ), rather than in their hides. They move less, when handled ( I don't handle, when they are in blue, as they don't like it, it can't be that pleasant for them, and also, in nature, they tend to hide away and wait it out ). And yes, they belly scales feel rougher, edges seem to stick out more.
After that, Bazil develops faint darkish stripes, and starts looking like a caramel corn, then the belly scales turn milky, then she darkens even more, looking almost like an anery, then her eyes go milky, etc.
I think, if I remember - with the snows, it was something about their cheeks and around vent areas turning more pink, then usual - it's hard to see any change in their eyes, apparently. I'll try to find the thread for you. Considering the growth and change in her care, I'd agree with everyone else, and say she's going blue... |

Luke, smart bunny, Razee - a certain lady's eyes have a slight film over them this morning - not blue, but more milky (bearing in mind, she is a red eyed snake).
She wasn't up for much handling, so I just let her be. Tummy feels just as rough as yesterday so can I have some advice on the following please?
She has refused a meal "going" into blue, so I am feeling that since I have got some precious grams on her, I can wait for her to have new clothes before I offer her her next meal. I think it must be very uncomfortable for her to contemplate eating at the moment.
She certainly keeps me on my toes! She made it known that playtime wasn't on the agenda today, she just wanted into her warm hide.
I am sure I have a schizophrenic corn (no offence to schizophrenics meant, just used to describe her strange little temperament).
Think I will just leave it to checking her when I change her water for the next few days and not worry about her eating until we have new clothes as her scales are starting to look very dry and a couple are sticking up.
Does that sound OK? |

It will be perfectly fine to leave her until she has shed before offering food again, I would think in the wild they are highly likely not to eat until after they have shed. Both my corns refuse food when in shed, so I don't even offer if I know they have started their shed cycle, this can mean that sometimes they miss two feeds dependant on how long they take from start to finish. Morse, my amel corn hates being disturbed when in shed cycle and hides so that I can't see him/her, and Zeus can be grumpy at the best of times, rattling his/her tail at me when I go to get him/her out of the viv, so I leave them alone until after the deed is done |

Ah - many people wouldn't spot the film over her eyes - apparently, it's quite hard to see in snows. I imagine it must be even harder to see on a little one. :-)
I'd just keep an eye on humidity - it's very dry where I'm at the moment, and Little T had a bit of a job with his last shed, even though I misted his viv once a day. Could have been, because I was watching him, though. He doesn't like being watched when shedding , so left him to it in the end, very grudgingly, as you can imagine. You could offer Cathy a moist hide, she might not use it, but she'll have the option, if she wants to.
Not feeding her should be ok, even with her past problems, she's still better of than she had been.
Good luck with trying to see her shed, they are sneaky little so and so's :-) |

Blackcat and Razee have got there first but I just wanted to add that it may be worthwhile putting an extra water bowl in the warm side, so on her heatmat. That means there is a continuous slight rise in humidity while she's blue. Normally it shouldn't be necessary, but I know a lot of corns are having trouble shedding at the moment and think its probably because its so cold and we've had the central heating on for a long time now, it's dried out the air.
I'm not surprised you noticed the film over her eyes....you were aware that she may be 'blue' and you are very aware of the slightest change in her, which is unsurprising considering her circumstances. What I do find interesting is that she's indicated that she doesn't want to come out to play. I know some corns are fine being handled during this time and wondered whether Cathy would be the same, considering how active she is. I'm like Blackcat, I don't feed or handle mine once I see there eyes clouding over. They become virtually blind and the last thing I want to do is stress them when it's unnecessary. As for missing the feed, in the wild they'd be hidden away instead of going out hunting, so it's natural for that to happen. Just be prepared, when you next weigh her, for her to have dropped back down to single digits. Hopefully she won't but its better to recognise that possibility.

Awwe I am so late to the party lol! I'd definitely leave her to it until after shedding as she has already shown you she doesn't want to eat or play (it's gonna kill you not handling for the next week or so I know, better get that second hatchy sorted out lol!!).
Only other advise - a damp flannel over the warm hide will also raise the humidity :D |
