Well, I thought that I would give her ladyship's viv a proper clean out today, and she had a lovely play. I didn't get too snap happy with her as I just enjoyed spending some time with her, but couldn't resist taking a few pics - first up the pyjama bottoms that she decided to relieve herself on just after the photo was taken!

Secondly, playtime on the bed, and yes, she has toys

And lastly her favourite game when she is out - peek a boo. Seriously loves it

Ok, ok, showing her off aside, she is feeling much more solid in the body and is a lot more muscular than when I first got her.

This is what happens when people give you advice and you listen to it. She has improved vastly. So much brighter in the eyes and muscular in the body and seems generally all round much happier. So I have come up with the following equation:-

Request for help + help given + advice given put into action = happy, healthy corn. Cathy says thank you

Thanks Luke - it is now starting to feel different too - she is getting a heck of a lot stronger than she was. I couldn't sleep last night so she stretched out on me and watched Watchmen with me, then fell asleep as soon as it was finished! Girl got taste.

To actually feel the difference is fantastic, so much more strength in her when she wraps herself round my fingers, though she just sat on the bed with me on her towel watching the film last night. Thank god my husband was asleep or I might have had to go and sleep with the dogs!

With her changing, so is my confidence with her. Really appreciate what you said

Razee, smart bunny - yup - well and truly pooped on! I think I can wait a while until she decides to tag me though - that is one club I am NOT looking forwards to joining!

I normally have her out on a towel on the bed, but she went wandering off and I was more impressed that she matched my pyjamas than paying attention to the other end

Oh god Blackcat - I would definitely be in the dog house! My husband thinks I am insane enough - taking pictures of snake poop on my pyjamas is one thing, UPLOADING them onto the forum, nope!

Honestly, his reaction was hillarious - you would have though it was toxic waste, not a tiny bit of baby snake poop! Antibac hand gel, latex gloves, the works! (him, not me I hasten to add)

mrsbunt thank you very much. As I said, she just "feels" different. Not like she is going into shed, but more muscular and she has most certainly filled out for sure. After she had relieved herself, I got a sneaky weigh in done (I couldn't help it - the scales were just sat there begging to be used ) and although the last time I weighed her she was 13g, she was definitely needing to poop (yay for see through babies!) so I discounted that and thought she *may* have put on 2g (she was 9g when I got her). Well, with the last poop well and truly gone, we have put on......3g! She is a solid 12g when empty . I am so happy she is in double figures now. I refer back to my equation that I came up with for that one for sure!

Blackcat I hereby promise, anything gross Cathy related will be hereby documented via the medium of photography for you all to look at!

Luke I don't think Cathy knows what her teeth are for yet, people wise. She hasn't even struck or made an attempt. Saying that, as she gets up to weight etc, I am up for it. I have been tagged, but when I was about 6 by my Nana's retic. It didn't hurt at all (there was blood though and I have 4 tiny scars from it). I don't remember it but apparently Gopher (the retic) was sat round me watching the TV and decided that my dinner was going to be his and tried taking it out of my hand. I won! (what kind of snake thinks a salad sandwich is dinner? daft snake!)

Hissyfit thank you so much . I think Cathy is just a lazy wotsit on occasion. She literally lay out on my chest watching the TV on "her" towel, occasionally moving a bit closer to my neck to warm up. She likes being stroked like you would a dog, so I just lay there doing that for most of the film (it is over 2 hours long). I got the hint when the next one came on as she turned round to look at me as if to say "NOT watching this rubbish - viv please". And thank you for welcoming me to the poop club. You guys like pics of snake poop - I honestly think a video of my husband's reaction would have been far funnier if I had been able to reach the camera in time!

So much for the full viv clean out yesterday - she has rearranged it already.

Serious note here. As I have said, when I got her she was on 1 pinkie every 7 days, and I brought that down to 6, and the following week 5. 5 days later I got a refusal, so she is due again tonight (if I try for another 5).

I am thinking that I inadvertently overwhelmed her with food, so am tempted to leave it for 6 and feed her tomorrow. I would prefer her a little hungry, than a refusal which would leave her a little longer (have had 1 since I have had her, but no regurges and as you all know, she is a known regurger). My heart is saying to go for 6 days, and then 5 after that to find her preferred schedule. Anyone got any experience or advice that they would care to impart to the wally here please!

It is so lovely to see her Fi, but I'm even more pleased that you are just enjoying her . It is wonderful to hear how much better she is feeling and looking. We can tell a bit from the photos, but you know what she was like when you first got her, how weak and skinny she was, so it must be so reassuring for you to literally be able to feel the difference in her after only a couple of feeds .

I wish we could put your equation as the mission statement for this forum!! And I definitely wish that everyone who asked for help and advice felt the same as you, because unfortunately all too often our advice falls on deaf ears . It's such a pleasure to have someone as receptive as you....especially with such a challenging snake as Miss Cathy !

I'm so pleased that your confidence is growing . It really is a learning process, for both of you. The lovely thing is that you have a real personality where Cathy is concerned and she is going to bring you so much joy and laughter in the years to come. BUT don't forget the fact that not only are you blessed to have her, she is blessed to have you....especially as so many people would have just given up on her . But not you ....and you are already seeing the fruits of your labour .

I do love the way she just lies on you. Mine are like just like Hissyfit's....

Why doesn't it surprise me that you weighed her ??!! I knew you wouldn't be able to resist the temptation and wait until you were supposed to according to the vet! But I'm SO glad you did....because now you know she's hit the double figures , which is fantastic news. And that's definitely her proper weight, rather than poo included .

As far as feeding her is concerned....I don't have any experience in this matter, as you know, but do wonder if you are right about her being a bit overwhelmed when you tried to feed her last time. I know the vet wants you to feed her every 5 days, but you've got to remember that she isn't used to having food that often and the food she did have she often didn't keep down , so her stomach is probably fairly small for her age and not used to the amount of food she is now getting. I know that my stomach shrunk when I went through a long period of being sick and not being able to eat much. When I recovered I found I couldn't eat what I used to, because I would feel full before I'd finished and would feel sick if I ate more. I would think that might be the case with her and it will just take a little time for her stomach to adapt to having food more regularly.

Check with your vet if you want but as you know she is definitely putting on weight, and is even in double figures despite missing a feed, I don't see an issue in waiting the extra day and hopefully having a hungry snake.

I look forward to hearing what you decide and what she decides when it comes time to eat .

Xxx

ROFL Fi, I believe Blackcat meant photos if you were tagged... not poop Although if you search you will easily find poop pics on the forum as well lol.

I have only been tagged once, and that was by Ember as a tiny little thing when I was holding her mouse with my fingers - I was so used to Corno just delicately taking the offering, Ember has a somewhat different temperament she struck and missed the mouse but frantically coiled my finger. I did yell for hubby to bring the camera but by the time he got it she had realised my finger was a bit ambitious lol. It was actually a real relief for me as it got it over with and I knew then it doesn't hurt (still not going to encourage Corno to try now she is so big though lol!).

Edit: Oh and by the way - no way I could wait as long as the vet said before weighing Cathy, I still weigh mine every week, I reckon you did well to hold off this long

Edit 2 lol: sorry I missed the bit about the feeding - I think you know Cathy best and if you feel you would rather wait the 6 days then go for it, I expect that would be the best thing to do

Fi, I'd say that is actually quite a decent weight gain in relation to her overall weight, in such a short time, and considering her past. I'd go with your instinct, and feed on day 6, just for now, and see how she does, like Kellog has said, her stomach might not be used to it, yet, and 6 days is a good compromise. It also depends on how big your pinkies are - there's a huge difference between 1 day old and 4 day old pinkie. Let's say, that in future, she's had a tiny pinkie, ate it, sat in her hot hide, and pooped 2 days after - I'd feed on day 5. Or - you fed a large pinkie, it took her 3 - 4 days to digest, I'd feed on day 6.
I still do this with mine now. If Baz eats, but then goes and sits in a cold hide, it can take her 4 -5 days to digest, I feed her 8 or 9 days later, if she's had a small meal, sat on a heatmat and pooped 2 - 3 days after, I feed her on day 7.

If you are a bit worried about refusal - there are a little things, you can do - you probably already know this - but just in case: feed in the evening, as it's getting dark, that's the time of the day, when they'd hunt naturally. You can defrost the pinkie near her home, so that the smell wafts across to her, and gets her in the mood. It helps, if she'd been in her warm hide, and is the right temperature for eating, cold snake might not want to eat. Etc.

I actually handle my snakes shortly before feeding ( I wouldn't recommend this for shy hatchlings or shy feeders, though ) - if I find they'd been sitting at the cold side. By having them on me for 5 or 10 mins, they warm up nicely - but in this case, I don't let them see the food, until I put them in the feeding tub, I have had them not biting, but constricting my hand madly before, when they smelled the mouse defrosting. ;-)

Kellog Aw, thank you for those lovely words. My little equation is just what I have come up with in my head, and pretty much falls under the umbrella of common sense. Why bother asking for help and not following it through . Seems pointless and a waste of forum member's time to me. Cathy has benefited beyond belief from everyone's help, as you can see.

smart bunny poops, I mean whoops! Gotcha now . Any tagging will be photographed for the forum's amusement! Saying that, Mr "Antibac hand gel and gloves" has just had his very first hold of Cathy and enjoyed it lots. She has got him wrapped round her little finger (figuratively, and literally) now

Razee Miss Earnshaw is a shy feeder for sure. As I have said, the RUB and tongs? Nope - tongs = freedom! I feed her in the evening with a 3g pinkie at the same temp as her warm end of the viv. She won't take it any other way than off her coco hide, so I have it set up that there is kitchen paper underneath so she can't ingest substrate at the same time and place it head down just over the opening for her. I am very slowly filling the coco hide (she has another warm hide too) as I would like to get her feeding out of the viv, but as SexyBear has said, it isn't a necessity. Given I have her on aspen shavings, I just don't want her ingesting any and getting impacted at the moment. I pop the pinkie on the hide, and then cover it up with a dark towel (it is a Monkfield viv so the ventilation holes are at the sides, completely away from the glass). That has worked for the 3 successful feeds we have had with her.

I try to keep handling to a minimum on feeding day and defrost her pinkie on top of the wardrobe (about 2 feet away) so that seems to be working.

I leave her completely alone for 24 hours after a feed, as I change the water just before the pinkie goes in and then check where she is digesting (have found it is the warm end, apart from the first one).

Decision made!

I am going to feed her tomorrow night (6 days) as I think I might have overwhelmed her, and it is a good compromise. She is fully empty now, no poop left in there, so she can have playtime today, and I will keep it down to a minimum tomorrow (that is what worked last time), just 10/15 minutes in the morning then I shall restrain myself until she is 60 hours post feed. I know it is a bit excessive, but I am still getting to know her preferences and as Kellog has said, I have a lifetime to spend with her. Health comes first for sure.

I think it is a good compromise, and as Razee said, I am going to keep an eye out for where she chooses to digest. I can pretty much guarantee that there will be her flowers involved though! She seems to wrap herself round them regardless so am going to put some in each hide for her to see what she thinks.

Yay for the weight increase, and I think you have made the correct call regards feeding on day 6, rather than on day 5
As for photos, ones of you being tagged are compulsary as proof it happened
Ones of poop are pretty gross, sometimes people post photos if they are unsure if it is poo or regurge or if different from 'normal' looking poo.
Neither of my two corns are still when out of their vivs, taking photos of them is interesting
