Way to go Miss Earnshaw - taking food from the tongs and allowing the viewing of a shed
I have had my two corns for nearly 18 months now and haven't managed to see one of them shed yet.
Like Kellog and smart bunny I will be listening for the shriek tonight - hope all goes well

Kellog the feeding went "quite" well with the better half - he dropped the second pinkie! He is now researching non locking hemostats as he found the tongs a bit difficult for his shovels hands . As her ladyship was having "hide service" again, I did the first one to show him (of course, having only given her 2 previously I am the world expert ).

She was pretty shattered, especially as I had got her out to give the viv a deep clean due to the trashing it got last night and this morning. It is funny you should mention what the rolled up shed looked like - I thought it was just me so went for the "tights" analogy instead

So, one lady in a clean viv, given it a little move around and fed now, curled up around her flowers. I think that will be the last I see of her until Friday morning now, water changes aside. I got a video of her eating but Photobucket said it was too big . She did do a *huge* yawn at the end of it all though .

smart bunny I am hoping that the right corn will come to me when the time comes. I think a little more confidence with Cathy and then the time will be right. From a little tiny girl who was a picky eater at best and wouldn't do it in front of anyone and then only under cover of darkness she has come on in leaps and bound. There is no particular morph I am after (and I would have to travel to the UK to get one of the more fancy ones), I think a gorgeous carolina or snow would be just perfect.

I am not going to breed ever as I don't know enough about Cathy's start in life so wouldn't risk it no matter what. I will continue to lurk in the breeding section of the forum as I love it when people get their locks, then eggs, and the gorgeous babies too. I am so pleased that Figs' eggs hatched after her loosing Goonie how she did.

Blackcat sadly (for you lot!) no shrieks tonight (although a slight wimper from my husband when he dropped the pinkie!) - I think she was far too tired, but was really hungry as she was a couple of days late due to her shed. She just happily had them brought to her and then snuggled up. She is 24g now so I think one or two more double pinkie feeds and we are going to be on to the fuzzies as the pinkies really aren't leaving much of a bump at all. I just don't want to spoil it for her. The 2 pinkies I am giving her weigh the same as a fuzzie so I am happy for another couple of feeds for now.

After that, cue more neuroses!!

I am very proud of her smart bunny - more so as it has been on her terms completely.

She definitely does get "food face" now I have taken the towel off the viv and can actually see her - a real glint in her eye! I felt awful yesterday morning as there she was, absolutely exhausted in a viv that resembled the snake equivalent of an all night party and she made "food face" at me when I got her shed out.

I hadn't any pinkies thawed and I really did need to clean the viv out as she had missed her bi weekly deep clean so she finally skulked off to sleep for a while. I didn't want to feed her and put off cleaning her out properly for another two days.

Just a quick question you might be able to help me with - it has been ridiculously hot over here recently. I have a room thermometer (for my epilepsy as when it gets really warm, I have a lot more seizures) and it was hitting 28/29 frequently which is why I moved her. I was changing her water 3 times a day too. This is what I was wondering, normally I change her water once a day in the morning, but as it got warmer I was doing it two or three times a day.

Is that overkill? Now we have got the temperature in the room down to 22 with the man tinfoil in the roof, I feel that she should have cold and fresh water twice a day. I guess I am just wondering how you would do it? It isn't leaving any condensation at all and I have checked her breathing religiously each time she comes out of the viv and it is as clear as a whistle.

Would genuinely appreciate some advice on this one please

So pleased she is doing so well and so obviously growing both in confidence and weight.
With regards to the water, changing twice a day in my eyes is most definately overkill - I only change mine once or twice a week.
I am sure others will all have different views and let you know what they do

I really appreciate the quick reply Blackcat. The reason I have been changing it daily is because there is a film on the top of the water every morning without fail. I have scrubbed her water bowl with reptile friendly disinfectant and rinsed for all my might! I put a "test bowl" in too (in the form of an egg cup) and that had no film on it even though it was cleaned exactly the same way.

I found out only recently that her ladyship seems to like a nightly dip in her bowl and I think that is what is leaving the film on the water. At first I thought it was because the viv was too hot but her temps are reading fine and she seems in tip top condition. Just a quirk of her I suppose. And that is what I get for reading Kathy and Bill Love's book too many times!

Glad you liked what I compared a fresh shed to ....and I know I'm not the only one to think that, others just don't say it !

I feel so sorry for your OH, I can just imagine how he felt dropping that pinkie on his first try at feeding her . It doesn't surprise me that he went straight off to work out how to avoid it happening again.

I know she was giving you that 'hungry face' when you took her shed out, but you definitely did the right thing waiting. She may have been hungry but she was also exhausted and needed the time to recover her strength before she ate. I can't believe she's 24g ! She's come so far .

It is hard when it gets hot and the temps in the vivs go up. Hopefully it won't happen again now that you have the 'man foil' in the roof, but if it does would having a fan in your room help? Sometimes it helps but other times all it does is move the warm air around.

I'm like Blackcat as far as water is concerned. I TRY to change it every couple of days but that is happening less and less . The one thing I always make sure of is that I put fresh water in when I feed them. With Cathy enjoying a nightly swim then it probably is worth changing it daily, although not vital.

Sorry, tired....so am probably not making much sense .

Oh Kellog, he felt awful when he dropped the pinkie. We have the locking hemostats for when he goes fishing, but they would be a bit tricky with feeding so Amazon has come up trumps this morning and non locking ones are on their way (from America - only the best and the better half is paying ).

It is funny you should mention a fan - we have a tall one that does the rotating thing and it has been on for 5 days and nights solid now (it has just come down 2 settings with the man foil going up in the loft).

It is hard to explain, but we live in a 3 story house surrounded by 2 story houses and are on the top floor, so totally exposed to the heat. We were sat in the garden the other day and in the direct sun it was 32 degrees. Far too hot! I had put the dogs away for a while and brought Cathy down for her first "fresh air" and she loved it. We sat in the shade with her playpen and toys in it and she loved it. I popped a hide in so she could let me know when she had had enough and was out for a good half hour playing round.

Just had some lovely post too - a tax rebate! We are going to put half in the savings and then what is left is getting split in two - half for Cathy and half for the fish.

I have to apologise to both you and Blackcat. I was adamant I had read in the book I had got that fresh water daily was a must (which is why I was asking about upping to twice daily when it when it was warm), but I have found the chapter I wanted and they reckon on every 3 days, 4 at a push. I think now it is a bit cooler in her room I will just go back to changing it in the morning for her.

Just for the record, you may be tired but I detect absolutely no nonsense from you at all

We all do things differently, but it doesn't mean it is wrong - I am a person that sticks with doing things that I have found to work and if it works why change it for the sake of change or because some one else has told me it should be done a different way.
Looking forward to hearing about Cathy's new 'things' with her half of the tax rebate

That is very generous of you Blackcat, thank you

I think Cathy has just got used to fresh water daily so I will stick with it, and reign in on the overkill

I had the time of my life last night looking for prospective purchases for Cathy last night. I am not going to spend ridiculous amounts of money but it is nice to have a little extra to spend on her for sure. My better half was going to build her "forever home" but is now going to use the wood to make a stand for her "forever home" that we are going to buy. Am quite drawn to the 3'x2'x2' Vivexotics one that I have seen for her as she likes height.

Kellog posted up a link for me for a table for a viv just incase Cathy wouldn't eat out in the open but as I know she will now, that is going in there so she has some lovely things to play with as I have already got it.

Am going to be left with a little starter viv after that... I wonder what I could do with it . I think a little carolina or snow would be perfect . I know they aren't particularly spectacular morphs, but there is something I really do love about them. I had got my sights set on an anery to start with, but I am seeing some gorgeous pictures of normals and snows on here that I might just go there. I think with there being so many gorgeous morphs out there that these little beauties are quite often overlooked.

Picky eaters? Bring them on! With everyone's help I am equipped to deal with it all now! In the 14 weeks I have had Cathy she has come on in leaps and bounds and had come on from the 9g weakling that I really had concerns about. So much so that she needs a move already

Ok, being rather self indulgent here, but have been promising some new pics of Cathy and even though I have been asking for the better half's help we have had lots going on, so bring on the 1 handed iPhone shots! Looking back over the old ones I have posted, I can finally see how much she has grown. So, without further ado, Miss Catherine Earnshaw weighing in at a whopping 24g

I am rather proud of her progress - considering she just about made it from my wrist, up about my middle finger and back to my wrist and that was after a few feeds with me too when I had got her. So yes, just having a proud "snakey mummy" moment here. Bored of the attempted photo shoot and with the appearance of my other half, she is now curled up in his hand whilst he tries to eat a banana and drink a coffee. Unfortunately he won't let me take a picture as it is rather funny, as Cathy seems to be taking a liking to the banana peel!

Are you sure you haven't swapped snakes ??!! Wow , you can see a MAJOR difference with her in these pics, both in length and width and how solid she is. You have done SUCH a brilliant job with her, Fi .

As far as the water thing is concerned I'm wondering if you got confused with the advice given for the first week of settling a snake in, where you change the water daily so that the snake gets used to your smell and your hand in its home. Must admit that I always feel I should change mine's water more often than I do....but it just doesn't get done.

I can't wait to see pics of the final product, when Miss Cathy's 'forever palace' is complete . And at the rate she's growing it won't be long before she's in it!

Hand on heart, that is Miss Earnshaw, Kellog. She is most definitely a boot lace now, her shoe lace days are far behind her!

Even though they aren't the greatest pics, the difference in size is definitely obvious (I had a look back on my iPad at the ones I took when I first got her too, and was quite surprised).

She is so much stronger and faster now it is fantastic. She will quite happily dangle off my wrist if she has her tail locked in place round it, tasting the room for the next target of her attention - today it was playtime on the bed with the PS3 controller and the remotes for the TV, along with playing on the keyboard on the laptop.

I think you have hit the nail on the head about the water thing Kellog, I genuinely hadn't thought of that . As I have done it daily since I have had her and she seems pleased with this arrangement, I think I will leave it at that. I normally take her bowl down for a wash when I make my coffee in the morning so it is probably more for my benefit than hers now as it gives me good incentive to get out of bed when I can't be bothered on occasion

I had a little read back over some of the things that worried me when I first got her and at the time, they were genuine worries but looking at her now, I think she has outdone herself.

The actual rebate arrived today, so once that is in the bank on Monday, shopping for her forever home can start in earnest. Just looking forwards to getting it and popping all her things in it. As she is a bit of a "dipper" in her water dish, I am going to get her a bigger one as so she can have a bit of room to move in it (never thought I would be saying that so soon!)

If you take the width x depth as a rule for the size of viv, she is just half an inch short of it now, so I think the move will happen quite quickly. I was thinking of popping loads of plastic flowers, vines and a rope in there so she hasn't got too much open space and lots of room to hide and feel secure. It is quite funny as she has this little tiny head, slender neck and then a body that just goes on forever! One of my very guilty pleasures is looking around the forum at the pictures of peoples adult snakes and how big they get - at one point I didn't even dare hope that Cathy would get like that. Now it is just a case of when

Well, Cathy did something last night again to surprise me! It was dinner night and I had been defrosting her dinner on her viv (I have been reading in the other thread about how people defrost their food - I put hers on top of the wardrobe and then about half an hour before feeding time put it on top of the viv so the smell starts to waft in more strongly.

She started acting quite strangely when I moved it on top of the viv so I decided to feed her straight away. Well, I think she has been plotting what I am about to tell you all week to be honest. I warm the pinkie slightly in my hand between a bit of cling film before I give them to her now so having done that and pinkie #1 on tongs, she gave me a delightful performance.

She had been roaming in her viv when I was putting the pinkie on the tongs but as soon as I lowered it in, she retreated. I thought "great, here we go again" but no, she had other ideas. She was in her flowers looking at it and fortunately I saw a little wobble in her head and she came flying out for it . We had a strike! I didn't shriek or drop it (the head wobble gave it away as that was completely new, looking back, like a toddler doing something for the first time!)

The funniest thing though, once she made sure she had it she literally looked round the viv for errant snakes that might have moved in unknown to her as if to say "mine!". Yes, largest pinkies I can get and she is looking round with it in her mouth, daft girl. So, with that dispatched of very quickly, she did exactly the same with pinkie #2, and then retreated (until Friday morning - I find she is most settled if I leave her the little extra).

So there, my little girl's "hunting" response has started to kick in. She did look terribly smug at the end of it all, I must admit. Heaven only knows what she is going to throw at me next week. I have been debating with the other half as to this one, and really would appreciate some help. She is still only fed weekly and seems fine with it, but she doesn't have the girth for fuzzies just yet and the pinkies are through her system in 4 days, without fail now. I am thinking of giving her a try at 6 days or (and this is what I would appreciate everyone's collective help on) leave her with what I know she will take happily which is every 7 days. I have tried with lowering it before, but things have changed radically in such a small space of time so I am really not sure anymore

I'm sorry Fi, I just had to smile reading that....way to go Miss Earnshaw !! But really I'm most pleased for you, because I know how wonderful it is to get a proper feeding response from your snake. Yes, it's ok to say that all that's important is that your snake is eating....but it is amazing to see them in action and its what we all want if we're totally honest.

As for feeding, I'd try offering her another feed in 6 days. She's a good weight and IF she refuses it isn't a big deal and you can offer her again 6 days later, because by then it'll be over the 7 days she's used to....talk about a long-winded, probably jumbled sentence , hope it makes sense! Have you actually had a chance to look through some fuzzies and see if any are small enough for her to move up to? I gather they do quite a growth spurt once they do move up to them so it could make all the difference with her....getting her started on the smallest you can find and hopefully she'll soon fill out to take 'normal' ones.

Hope I've been of some help instead of just rambling .

Her girth won't take the fuzzies I have Kellog at all. She is still quite slender and the double pinkies are weighing more than a single fuzzie - heck, she is looking for a third on occasion!

All the fuzzies seem quite round compared to the pinkies that I have got and I am not going back to the former place that I used to get her food from.

I really like the idea of 6 days, I think I will definitely give it a go. I handle her a lot on feeding day (that seems to get her tummy going for food) so will just bring it a day forwards.

I have had to get the better half to read the feeding sticky as he was horrified that she could take something one and a half times her girth, in fairness he is as worried as I used to be about a regurge. I think those days are well and truly behind us now. The fuzzies are twice her girth so I am happy to try and up the frequency of double pinkies to get her there, rather than risk her going backwards with her feeding.

I showed him Sexybear77's comparison thread about snake sizes from the same clutch too, and that put his mind more at rest. So, next Monday we will give it a try for sure.

Just so proud of her at the moment, everyone has left the room as I won't shut up about it

I'm not surprised that you want to keep talking about it....I'd be the same, driving my family mad .

She's just going to be on double pinkies for longer than most, until she's put more 'width' on. Upping the size of the pinkies will help, as near the top end they are getting near/the same size as fuzzies. Hopefully she'll adjust to eating every 6 days .

Glad your OH has been reassure by what he's read. I can understand him being concerned about the size differences and the size of prey they can eat. Silvi refused a rat fluff today, it was the biggest I'd ever offered her and was within the size she can take. She originally struck and then nuzzled it around, but wouldn't eat it even after I'd warmed it. Not sure if its the fact that it has fur, whereas previous ones haven't, whether she was intimidated by the size, because rat fluffs' heads are BIG, or if she just didn't want to eat . But I know if she had I wouldn't have worried about her coping with it because I know it wasn't too big for her, even if she didn't .

I have spoken to the better half Kellog, gone through Cathy's food stock in the freezer and we have done little bags of double pinkies that are the right girth but a good size for her (and all of the doubles weigh more than the fuzzies I have got - am wondering if I am ever going to use them!).

She is still so slender and has a rather tiny head compared to most of the pics I see on here so we are going to hopefully feed her up that way, and are definitely going to give the 6 day gap a try this week (well, next technically). If that goes well, will keep it at that for a month to see how her weight goes. I am still only weighing her monthly as I would tear my hair out if I did it weekly .

Hope Silvi gets over her dislike of joey fluffs (having lived on the Isle of Man, we can't use the R word - it is a BIG no no!).

I have managed to post a video that was too big for Photobucket on to YouTube of Cathy eating once she allowed the towel to come off and deigned to allow us to watch her eat.

It does get a bit fuzzy in places as my camera wasn't sure if it should be focusing on the glass of her viv or Cathy herself!

Anyway, one corn snake, eating in public finally
