The only way you will know is to try covering her again, but I doubt it was to do with the towel covering the faunarium. Cathy is just being Cathy and keeping you guessing to her next move
My amel stripe Morse was an exuberant strike and coil feeder, allowing me to watch, but now I have to cover the feeding rub for Morse to feed, saying that last night he struck at the mouse as I was putting it in the rub, so got to watch again.
Morse was also a very bold hatchling, always out and about and even sleeping in the open, however now is generally only seen at dusk and retreats if I move too quickly across the room.
Zeus my anery corn was shy and secretive as a hatchling, but now I see him /her out and about at all times of the day.
So I guess what I am saying is that they are all individuals and just try not to stress too much - Cathy is her 'own' snake and will do what she wants when she wants
To me I just 'think' she is now is settling really well, growing in strength and thus is becoming bolder

Thank you Kellog and Blackcat. I have to thank Razee for it all to be honest. I remembered her "scenting a trail" post and that is what I was going to do as her ladyship hadn't shied away from the first pinkie but didn't even get a chance to do that! Saying that, it is still filed away in my brain for future use for Miss Contrary

I have to be honest, nothing about Cathy's behaviour stresses me anymore, just befuddles me .

I would put a pound to a penny that we will be back to towels and ninja activities next feed but she has shown me that she can do it, and I am so grateful for that.

Please don't laugh but I was absolutely *gobsmacked* at how big her mouth is!!! Now obviously I knew it was big enough to eat a pinkie or two as they had been disappearing and she was putting weight on and poo was arriving at regular intervals. It was just HOW big it was at full stretch

Her weight is up to 22g now so I do believe that the fuzzies will be out in the next couple of feeds. Would just like (hah, that is a curse me even wishing it!) a couple more double pinkie feeds to get the calcium in her then fingers crossed for moving up a size.

To think of my little 9g weedling that I bought back in March and the end of May she has come so far - she has done herself proud for sure

It's so brilliant that she's already 22g ! Your little shoe-lace is more of a boot-lace now .

I totally understand what you mean about the size of their mouths, it still amazes me. You just wait until you see her 'yawn' after a feed to realign her jaw....her mouth will stretch even wider !

There is no rush to move her on to fuzzies, so get those few more double pinkie feeds in before you move her up.

And remember, it's not only her who's done herself proud....it's you too .

I have been doing lots of reading on this one Kellog and like you said, am in no rush as 2 pinkies can weigh more than 1 fuzzie some of the time. I have got her the biggest pinkies that I can and she seems to love them, be it 1 or 2.

It is funny you should mention the little yawn as I have seen it on lots of videos on YouTube and lo and behold.... I got one too! She didn't even bother after the first pinkie so must have had her tummy set on having 2 for sure.

It was just such a delight and privilege to see her eat, and it being such a positive feeding experience for her.

I am not a gambling woman but boy should I have gone to the bookies for this young ladies feed last Sunday! (and yes, I know it is Wednesday, I have been in bed for 3 days solid pretty much with the epilepsy striking at will).

Went in to feed her to find....... one blind snake

Yup, she is teasing me again! I knew there had to be a price to pay for watching her feed. Poor thing is in blue. It is MUCH easier to see now too, just a milky film on her eyes. I am going to get the better half to get the "big boy" camera out (his DSLR) today to try and take a couple of pics of her in situ but get her eyes so that anyone with a new baby snow can see the subtle change as it is so tiny, but obvious when I (now) know what I am looking for.

I will have probably missed it this time but next time I will try, as the difference is so small, but very obvious in gentle light. Harsh light and you wouldn't see it, but I would love pics not just for me but to help anyone with a baby amel or first time owner of one to see.

As blundering snake owner here picked her up before noticing, she was a little bit jumpy when I got her out of the viv, but she was soon replaced exactly where I had extracted her from - wow am I a bad owner - the least she could have done is left me a note on the viv wall

Don't worry - half the time the only reason I realise Corno is in blue is because I go to get her out, she tail rattles at me, and I get her out see she's in blue - I still get her out though as if I'm intending feeding she still eats when in blue, and she's always happy once out. Once I know she is in blue I do then leave her alone until she's shed though.

smart bunny I am definitely leaving her ladyship to it at the moment, she seems rather reclusive to say the least. It doesn't help that I live about 100 metres away from the TT Course (we have road racing over here and it is shaking the foundations of the house )

Have just spot cleaned, given her some fresh water and a little sphag straight out of the bag as it is really arid up in our bedroom. I am sure she will surprise me rather soon with shiny new skin.

She is definitely not interested in dinner - gave it a try but she didn't eat when she was in shed last time either. FINALLY starting to get to know her properly which although means a missed meal, means I am understanding her more.

I really appreciate you mentioning Corno's tail, strange as it may sound. Cathy normally curls hers round my fingers when she is out, but when blunderbus here got her out she didn't try. I have never had a tail rattle off her so maybe this is her way of letting me know. One for the notebook for sure

Firstly it's great that she's blue again, shows how well she's growing .

Secondly, the amount of times I've got my snakes out, either to handle or feed, and discovered them blue is too often to remember ! And I should know better, because you can generally see it coming with them....Silvi starts to sneeze a few days before her eyes cloud over and Kellog gets really dark. It's Asher that catches me out the most, he doesn't change much until his eyes film over. If I do get them out when they're like that their behaviour is very different to normal, staying as close to me as possible and not going off and exploring. They also don't eat when blue. I've chosen not to feed when they're like it because I figure that in the wild they would be hidden away, not out looking for food, and I know that this period is a very stressful time for them so don't want to add to it. But have had occasions where I haven't seen it coming so defrosted a mouse only to find a blue snake....who is NOT interested in eating.

You are NOT a blundering snake owner OR a bad owner....if you are those things then I dread to think what that makes most of us !!

I'll be really interested to see pics of Cathy with cloudy eyes, whether your OH can get the pics this time or next time.

You just wait until she gives you a tail rattle, it is the strangest thing coming from a corn with no rattle!

By the way,I haven't forgotten about you and my email is partly done....but you know what I'm like .

It will be next time Kellog as by the time I had got back to see her properly (knowing I wouldn't hurt her by having a seizure whilst I had her out ) her eyes had cleared. Just waiting for shiny new skin any day now as she is sulking under her moss at the moment!

My better half thought I had lost the plot completely when I asked him to take pictures of her eyes next time but I explained that it might help a first time owner of an amel/snow to see what it actually looked like. It was then he saw the method behind my madness

She is getting really big (for her) now. I am going to feed her when she has shed as she isn't interested whilst waiting for her old clothes to come off, then hopefully get some good ones next to a ruler or tape measure when she is done digesting. I am hoping she might let him take a pic or two of her eating as well. She has shown me that she will happily take of tongs so Miss Earnshaw has no excuse now!

I am just so amazed that I am getting all these little things that I thought I wouldn't get to see from her now. She really does seem settled finally. As smart bunny mentioned about the tail rattle, I would love to see her do that too

(I know you haven't forgotten me, and last Sunday was fantastic - will tell you all about it soon xxx)

I'm so glad that she's kept surprising you Fi ....and especially that you are getting to see her feed. You've always had the right attitude, that all that's important is that the snake eats....but I'm so pleased that she's getting confident enough to take from tongs and be witnessed eating . Who knows, she may even strike and coil eventually !

Found this old thread about Snows and snows shedding , thought you'd be interested.

If her ladyship ever strikes and coils I think I might have an attack of the vapours Kellog!

Thank you for finding that thread for me, it is fantastic. I know it will be helpful once she gets out of the "tiny" phase she is in now and is a grown up girl. Her neck is so tiny I wouldn't even be able to try to see if it had a "flabby" look to it at the moment. It was fantastic to see the eyes though, Cathy's don't go quite as milky just yet, but there is a definite change.

I have had to move her as the room she is in is far too warm for her to thermoregulate properly - it is nearly the same temp as the warm end of her viv.

I have upped the humidity with fresh sphagnum moss and am changing her water twice a day (which she seems to be rolling around in every night at the moment). This is our first summer in our new home and wowza is it hot! She is still sulking under her moss at the moment, and hasn't shed. I really feel for her as she must be very uncomfortable by now.

Just off to town to replenish school supplies for the hordes, will email you when I get home xxx

Wish I could be a fly on the wall WHEN she strikes !!

Glad you found the thread helpful. I'm not surprised you can't exactly apply it to your boot-lace....she's graduated from being a shoe-lace . I'm sorry you've had to move her out of your room. I know how much pleasure you get from having her close by. My snakes are a lot more active than they would normally be and I'm sure it's down to the strange weather.

Hope she sheds clean for you soon....and no rush on the email, I'm not going anywhere .

Oh I see how it is now

I can assure you that if she ever strikes and coils I shall hold fast and marvel at her nature (for that read scream like a big girl so loud that yes, you will be able to hear me!)

I shall henceforth make sure I feed her only on days that the wind stands a chance of carrying my screams over for you (and not to Ireland)

I have moved her back in to our bedroom as she was very unsettled where she was and the temperature wasn't even half a degree different. My better half went up into the loft yesterday with what looked like a man size roll of tinfoil (I am assured it was more complex than that) and he has done his magic up there and we could actually sleep in our room last night, rather than do what would pass for very bad stand up comedy with us both complaining THE WHOLE NIGHT how hot it was.

This went down well with our non human resident too as she was out and about, soaking in her water, rubbing her head on anything for a good hour but got nothing the poor thing. I can see her moving round in her shed (quite unnerving to see for the first time!).

I am going to see if a trip through a warm towel will help later if she has managed to get a snag as she genuinely looked quite naffed off when she gave up and retreated to the relative cool of brand new sphagnum in her cool hide, head hanging over the side to "watch TV" as my husband thinks she is doing.

Fortunately we have one of those digital thermometers that you shove in the turkey at Christmas - well now it has another use! Making sure the towel is the right temperature for my snake. I bet the marketers never thought of that one

I remember when Kellog first ate, having gone 13 weeks with me refusing to. I was NOT expecting it and just froze, statue like, scared that if I moved he'd stop eating . It is amazing when they do strike, although its also funny when they miss or don't get a grip and send the food swinging in circles round their heads .

I'm glad your OH has managed to cool your room down a bit, making it habitable for humans and reptiles . Personally I'd be slow to assist Cathy with her shed unless you saw that she had started it and was really struggling to get it off. I saw Kellog shed from the beginning recently, the first time ever as I usually catch him with his head clear, if I see him shed at all. I was quite surprised at how difficult it was for him to get started and it took him quite a long time. Shedding is a very stressful process and being handled while it happens can make it worse. I've only ever had to do it once and I was amazed at the way Silvi seemed to realise I was trying to help her and did what I needed her to do. It was an amazing feeling, having the shed come off in my hands. But I'd never do it again unless it was absolutely necessary. I think quite a few snakes are struggling with their sheds at the moment. Maybe it's because of the weird weather.

I do hope she manages to shed clean and if not then I'm sure you'll be able to help her if she needs it .

Well, I have just had the entire show, from start to finish Kellog!

As I said, she gave up in the early hours of the morning, and must have got some much needed rest but she ventured out about 20 minutes ago and I have a half perfect, half rolled up shed! It is good enough that I can see her tail tip is perfect, but I couldn't see the eye caps as it looked like bunched up tights at that end. I have unraveled it as best as I can, and as it is drying out, there the eye caps are. I popped my head in to see how she was and give her fresh water to get greeted with what is now known as "food face"!!

I am going to see if she will sleep it off for a while and she is due a full spring clean (was due her full viv clean out when she went into blue, so have just been spot cleaning), so am going to do that later and given the look on her face - food is on the menu for tonight!

I have read so many times has said about them trying to start the shed process off being quite hard and it was so upsetting to see her like that last night. I could see her moving IN the shed and she was stretching up, rubbing her head on anything in sight. The viv is absolutely trashed (she does like to rearrange, but it is always quite neat, this is like she has has a party in there and not bothered to clear up). I think a move is imminent for her for sure now, seeing her in the viv she is definitely longer and very near the depth of it now.

The worst bit was she kept coming up to the bit of the glass that she uses as her "hello! Play with me" place and just looked at me so sadly

I think a certain lady is going to be spoiled when she has slept this one off for sure.

It is so lovely to hear that your Silvi seemed to know exactly what you were doing for her - I know people say that our snakes are just hungry, ill, looking for love or stressed but I think there are shades inbetween, especially with what I am seeing with her ladyship.

Fingers crossed for feeding pics later - the better half wants to have a go this time (he has come round quickly!)

I shall PayPal you (and Kellog) the pennies for earplugs

Just so glad after much unraveling of her shed (think of tights when you have taken them off) that eye caps were there for sure. She is definitely hungry as this little pink head keeps popping out of her hide periodically. I just want her to have a little rest, clean the viv properly and then she can have her dinner.

If she does strike and coil - I am going to have to eat my words! A nice little graceful eating off the tongs I can cope with today

It's brilliant that she's done a good shed Fi . I know exactly what you mean about having to unroll part of the shed to make sure the head end is intact. And if you do it soon after they shed it feels very much like a certain contraceptive device !!

It may be easier when she's in a bigger viv, with more things to rub against and start her shed off. Mine have got branches, a pot hide, a cave hide and a couple of rocks as well as the sides of the vivs to help them....and after seeing Kellog do it, they definitely need the help.

I'm so glad your OH is getting so involved and even wanting to feed Cathy. I knew he couldn't withstand her allure for very long . Can't wait to see the feeding pics. It will be another milestone passed with Miss Cathy, her feeding recorded on 'film' .
