Oh, I don't know, Katie. Would the horses still drink the water, if it had oil in it? It might put them off. I heard about the tennis ball thing, but am worried Lucy, being Lucy, would probably swallow it ! But it works.
I just break the ice, and give them lots of soaked sugar beet mixed in their feeds, and make their feeds really wet in general. In Czech republic, we had to put warm water in the cold water in their troughs, to take the chill off it, some of the horses wouldn't drink enough when it was cold for a long spell. |

Lol congrats! I'm pretty sure they would so long as it wasnt a whole layer of oil over the water! They don't refuse oil in their feeds though anyways! lol. But yes I agree, break the ice! I had to go put my boot through the troughs in the field yesterday! |

Feeling incredibly privelidged, for the first time in years I'm on a yard that the taps so far have remained unfrozen Troughs in the field need breaking every morning, but it is great to watch them all play in the snow, just getting a little fed up of not being able to hack out. |

now thats just rubbing it in katie!! See i made the mistake of moving from a lovely yard which had electric and therefore a kettle to a field. No electric, no kettel and frozen taps :-( only upside is Jack is now 5 min and 2 mile from home rather than 30 min and 12 mile away. |

You can go off people Katie I used to be on a yard with electric, tea room with fridge, kettle, microwave and comfy chairs (plus 2 proper toilets on site)- all very nice but the water froze at the first sign of a frost, the horses couldn't get down the yard to the fields and it was 12 miles from home. I am now on a very small yard (just two of us) which has electric (kettle), water which so far has not frozen, no toilet but we do have stables, lol. It is only 4.5 miles from home and the horses have no problems getting to the fields |

sounds nice, I literaly have a field, water on site and off road parking for the car, lighting comes in the form of some street lights which are across the road :-) It is nice having him so close to home although it's a lot harder than livery life! i definalty don't miss yard politics thats for sure |

I know exactly what you mean regards yard politics, which is why I can't believe my luck for being where I am currently - a private block of four stables behind a private house. Well thought out in lay out and lovely people in the house I have my two and a good friend recently moved her gelding on - we share work load and no one telling us what, how etc we should be doing. |

you have denfinalty got a good one there! There are 3 others on the field with me and lucky we all get on really well, it's much nicer having only have a few people about. Jacks happy too which is the important bit, he settle really well with the other geldings, you'd think they have been together their whole lives. |

Electrics? What's that? Lol :-) Head torches rule + I got several torches from B&Q, that you can hang from various places ( hayrack etc. ), an that's my lot. The tap is very stupidly about 150 m from the yard, so I've got several connected hosepipes. One of the best buys was a portable camping cooker, present from hubby, - brilliant. Works off little gas bottles, so when the tap freezes, you can just warm water on the cooker ( I always keep container of water in old freezer chests, inside the tack room, when it's frosty ) then carefully defrost the tap with warm water. Problem is, if the hosepipe is blocked with ice ( I drain it, but can't put it away, as in the ground in places ), then I just have to cary buckets of water across the muddy field, oh joy. Still, had one winter, where I couldn't get to the field at all, had to leave the car on the main road, an walk about 20 mins in the lanes, in deep snow and ice, with bottles of water in my backpack ( didn't have my cooker then ). That's when I could really have done with being in nice livery yard.
You're really lucky, Blackcat. I used to share the field with a friend, but she'd moved out of the area. I'd love to be able to share with one or two other people, but a) I'm only renting the field, so it's not up to me, and b) it's hard to find someone reliable - risky, if you don't know the people. Am a bit scared of yard politics to go to a livery, but could do with all the facilities, ( though not the prices ).

I realize I am extremely lucky and make sure I respect the owners and their wishes. The other person who was on there when I first moved on was a nightmare, she never did any field poo picking, hardly ever did any other work round the yard to keep it tidy and was scared of her horse. Luckily for me she was bad at paying her rent on time and was told to find somewhere else, leaving me on my own, with the choice for it to stay that way or for me to find some one else. I'm not sure I would cope with out electric - so used to my creature comforts and a good hot mug of coffee |

You can find some nice yards Razee, although the good ones do tend to be pricey! I was lucky in that I worked on the yard where jack was kept. I had the advantage of a horse that lived out but still had access to facilitys and because i was staff i got a discount! Its the little things you forget about with field life. I really missed electric at first, the one thing i really miss is having some one around to sort Jack for me if needed. |

Lupi lou, that sounds really nice. My biggest problem is going away, and finding someone to look after them, too. I have a friend that use to have horses, but can't any more, due to ill health. She does two mornings a week for me, and sometimes looks after them, when I'm away, but I don't want to ask her much, as I know it might be too much for her. So from that point, livery would be ideal.
Katie, you're lucky, too! Wish I could find a place like that. |

well I had an interesting call today. One of the girl from the field rang me asking if I'd sold Jack.to which my response was no why (getting rather paranoid at this point thinking he wasn't in the field!) her response was that the new girl told her she'd bought Jack for £6000 and was a show cob! I found this quite amusing and said I'd take that, now if I've not mentioned before Jack is 20yr old and a loon in the show ring and had a bit of attitude (but I love him) so not worth £6000. Bless her I think she might be a bit special. Just had to share this :-) |
