So following the conviction of a nasty piece of work, for collecting a 'free' pit bull terrier via 'a well known classifieds site' and beating and stabbing it to death. (6 months by the way, really appropriate sentencing) A FB group has been set up to petition against selling animals via said site. I would assume the people involved would include other classifieds sites in this.
Is there a way that this can be legitimately policed or is a blanket ban more appropriate?
I found the breeder of my (soon to be) babies on such a site, despite checking out the forum here, the 'other' forum and Reptile stockists, this turned out to be the closest and cheapest (travel wise not animal wise) way to do it. Had she advertised on here, I would have gone through here.
So, luckily for these snakeys, I have researched and bought all my equipment, after reading 100's of posts from more experienced owners. Am I wrong to hope that the majority of people would be responsible like this and assume that horrific incidents like that are in the minority? Or should we assume people will take advantage of animals if given the chance?
This is in no way meant to have a pop at the websites involved. I am interested in your opinions on the sale of animals, not the websites mentioned. Whether you believe it should be regulated or not and how it would affect you if you breed or if you bought from breeders separately to the bigger shops/sites etc.
Hope this is ok to post, most of my friends have the odd cat, maybe lol I am after an exchange of thoughts on this subject. |

I am not against advertising animals through classifieds at all, but I think that they should all have a price, so little muppets can't get 'free' cats/dogs/rabbits for baiting (a big issue in my area). Even if the price was negotiable, it stops people getting pets for the sake of it. People who sell the animals should ensure that the new person should have some knowledge of how to properly care for it, and not just get rid. All that said, you are placing your trust and judgement into these people, expecting that they would take care of it, once that animal is handed over, there's not a lot the seller can do.
My dad breeds his dogs, and finds that advertising online strikes very little interest (well, serious interest) so he stopped that. But unless you know someone who breeds animals online is your best bet. I would rather buy off breeders than stores, simply because breeders are usually more about the care of the animals than the profit they make.
It is all about judgement, regulation can't be placed due to the amount of rehoming needed, unless individuals are banging out puppies like there's no tomorrow (they are who need to be banned), both parties need to consider the welfare of the animals. Sellers should 'examine' the buyer, and the buyer should 'examine' the seller. If something seems out of place then go elsewhere. And if necessary contact appropriate authorities. |

if animals were banned on classifieds, where would people buy and sell?
Its a sad story, but I think a blanket ban is just a knee jerk reaction to one evil person who would have probably still done the same (maybe to a stray or stolen an animal) if there was a ban. |

Banning things doesn't make the problem disappear. The person responsible for killing that dog didn't do it because he got a dog from a classified advert, he did it because he's an unstable person who likes killing animals. Banning advertising in classifieds won't change people's approach toward animals, it just changes where they get hold of them.
eeji is right - a ban is a knee-jerk reaction, usually from people who want something to change but can't be bothered properly investigating the issue to see what will actually make a difference. Banning the sale of animals in classifieds will allow the people responsible for the ban to have that warm, smug feeling that they did something good, while the problem continues unmonitered.
If people are the problem then that's what we should focus on, not the method they used to obtain the animal.

Never heard this story before, but thank you for sharing. Its an awful thing to happen. I think you are all right. Classified adds online should not be stopped. Jerks buying pets and not seeking or learning how to care for them properly make me feel sick.
The reason why I would be disheartened if these sites were stopped from selling pets online is due to its the way I got my corn. I'm so happy I went ahead with committing to getting him.
I must admit I was terrified but the seller was very helpful and had all information on sheds and feeds. They even gave me this website.
Minority should never over rule the majority, but it won't be any big surprise if this gets stopped.
