So I bought my first Carolina corn on Thursday and she's about 3 years old. Now it's been a few days I wanted to get her out again for the first time since she arrived. When she first came out the sack, she was extremely active but very tame.
This time however, she was a bit more cranky and as I've never been bitten I'm not so confident to see how little it hurts (yup I'm a wuss!) so i donned a glove. If I put my hand in, she coils up, hisses and rattles her tail. I've found the only way I can get her to come quietly is to lift her hide and wait for her to slither to me. She's good as gold then. Anyone else use this tactic?
To confuse things I suspect she may be ready to shed but I've never seen it before so I don't know for certain. |

Hi, I'm kinda new to all this too but I think the best thing is to leave them alone for 7 days after bringing them home so they can get used to their new environment.
I'm sure the more experienced people will give you other tips as well but 3 days isn't really enough time for your new snake.
Hope she calms down for you eventually  |

I've had mine for about 3 months now Mine is extremely laid back though and had no problems so far. Has even been picked up whilst in blue and didn't seem to mind. Showed no signs of stress but I just think that's her personality and obviously all snakes are different. I left Pearl for a week though before trying to pick her up and then when I did it was just for a few minutes until she was calm and then I put her back increasing the time out of her faun each time.
Now she loves being out and tries to escape when I try and put her back |

| I've noticed with my guys, that they belly checkers go pale, then they will dull down and come into 'blue' then their eyes will clear before they shed. Hope that helps. |

give her the 7 days and should get better..rubi who is also a carolina is the same as lupi lou the checkers go pale then skin dulls and eyes go blue Rubi clears up againa nd shed couple of days later (i got so confuseed first time when she cleared but no shed).
I did what u did at first lift the hide and let her come to me..ive also used the sock trick which carried around for aprox 6 hours and left in her viv for 2 weeks (she begam bit unhpayy about being handled when moved her from faun). This calmed her down now i can just pick her up depending on what position shes in i try to slide a finger under her about 1/3 of the way down. If shes in a particularly grumpy mood sometimes i slide a un sharpened pencil under her (not sure if this is actually advisable or not tho..could anyone could tell me if not?) im a bit of a wimp to about being bitten..although i know its not supposed to hurt. Although now with regular handling (usualy once every other day) she is calming so much and 9/10 can pick up straight away. |

| Lots of snakes are grumpy, when they're getting ready to shed. Mine just want to be left alone. As others have said, she might just needs some time to settle down. |

Cheers guys, I'm leaving her to settle in. I thought because she was older she may have settled in sooner. She has a few flakey bits along her body and her scales look opaque in the light but her eyes are still very clear. I heard its common for them to shed shortly after settling into a new crib. Is this true?
Advice very much appreciated guys, anyone Surrey way at all?? |

Hi good morning, I am in Surrey, in Mitcham and have a Carolina corn called Frank, who is now about 6 months old, got him in June.
I can also lift and handle him in blue but think i am lucky that his temperment is calm and is so loving that he has never striked or bitten or even attempted to do so and lets us lift him whenever we want. Where are you based? I am Jeanette, 46 and my son owns Frank, he is almost 8.

I'd leave her for at least a week to settle in a bit more. Just go into her viv to change her water each day and to check for 'dirty' substrate.
You could also try the old sock trick so she gets used to your smell. Put an old sock inside your top for the day then pop it into her favourite hide. The idea is that she will link your smell with a place of security, thus being less afraid of you.
If she's going into shed her colour will look a bit dull and her eyes will appear cloudy/greyish blue colour for a few days, then everything will go back to normal for a few more days before she sheds. Some, but not all snakes, get very grumpy during the shedding period.
You need to give your snake and yourself time to get used to each other. |

I live in godalming. Just on from Guildford. Franks sounds great, hopefully Tess will settle in to be the same. The snake that got me into them was like that. |

It was worth a try. I'd leave it there for a while and give her time to get used to it. Like people snakes vary and what works for some won't work for all.
She will get used to your scent in time just by you going in her viv to do water and substrate.
Keep trying, it will work out ok in time. |
