Hi all,
I wonder if you might be able to help:
Some of you may have read that I have recently bought a 3 year old Carolina who I am leaving to settle in now. The problem is, I was advised by the pet shop to feed her tomorrow (Tues 19th). I am away on business over the weekend (back Sunday eve)and then again for mon/tues until Weds eve next week. Is it advisable to disturb her settling in early to feed her if she will take it? Otherwise she will have to wait till Weds (26th).
Also she is on Aspen substrate and I read mixed things about feeding her in her viv on aspen (due to compaction)
I do have a large tupperware which I can modify with some air holes to feed her in but this would mean disturbing her from her viv (and I know she will be pretty cranky)and then transferring her back again on a full stomach after shes eaten (I dont want to make her regurgitate).
What is the best course of action? |

You can feed her in the Viv if you wish, just put down some kitchen roll to put the mouse on. This will reduce the risk of her getting any aspen on the mouse. You can keep an eye on her whilst she feeds this way without having to take her out of the viv early.

| Thanks Simmy, will try that. September the 5th I am told. I am not sure if she is due to shed which might also put her off. I haven't noticed her eyes clouding at all but she has some bits of loose skin and I think she looks a little opaque in the light. Hard to say without seeing it before though. |

She'll be fine to go without a feed until you come back. Some refuse food if they're about to go into shed and males will starve for months during the breeding season. It will also give her a bit longer to settle in.
Feeding in the viv is an individual choice but personally I wouldn't. It can make some snakes viv defensive and they also get the idea that you going in the viv means food and are more likely to strike.
I feed all mine in a container out of their viv and then just gently put them back once the mouse has gone down to the chest/mid body point. Then just leave her alone for 48 hours to digest her meal.

I feed mine in a container too. Was just suggesting this one time feed that way.
You say bits of "loose skin" where?? Can you provide pics? She shouldnt have loose skin. Unless you mean baggy skin? |

OK, will hold on the food then.
Yeah, she has an old scar on her back which is alright but you can just about see what I mean. Her scales seem ok its just a bit of a flakey top layer. Shes been drinking and her her viv is at 26degrees, with hides at both cool and warm end. The lady in the shop said she was probs due before not too long.
In this first pic, does she look like shes in blue for a shed?
