Hi all, my name is Ian and I have just bought myself a corn snake including a complete starter vivarium from my local reptile dealer. This is my first snake, I have named him Cornelius! lol
Cornelius is a year old and is still on pinkies, he is very small (the dealer who breeds these snakes only feeds them the minimum so they dont grow to fast)
I have done some research before I bought my snake and this forum has been a great help so a big thank you.
I will take some photo's but at the moment ive only had him a day so dont want to disturb him.
I have my snake on paper towels as I have been told to feed him a couple of times in his vivarium, once he is feeding outside his vivarium I will use substrate but what type? I do like the sound of astroturf where I can have a couple on the go! whats your thoughts and advice?

I like aspen but I have not tried anything else so I can't comment on the other substrates (i do have orchid bark for my JCP but it is not commonly used for corns). Mostly it is down to personal preference so just go with what you like and is affordable for you. |

| Welcome to the forum, they only feed pinkies because of cost, no other reason! I am at present using a top quality artificial turf for a couple of mine and I am impressed. Easy to clean and looks good. Obviously the ability to burrow is taken away but with plenty of rocks and perches to climb on and investigate doesn't appear to be a problem for them. If you do try it go the the best you can get as the very cheap stuff looks poor. |

My corns love Aspen, but if you are feeding inside of its home you got to be careful they dont ingest the Aspen. |

Welcome to the forum 
I am a fan of aspen myself but I haven't tried artificial turf so I can't really comment on that bit.
My Anery, Apollo was a petshop snake that had been fed the bare minimum too. He was 17g as a yearling, small and a bit underweight. Now just three months later he is over 50g and on fluffs (considering double fluffs as they aren't very big). |

Hi and welcome to the forum as mick pointed out the breeder probably just fed a maintaiance diet which they do again as mick said to keep costs low and keep them sall in the shops so they stay small and cute for longer thus easier to sell at a year old though hes probably able to take fuzzies just remmeber to go by the feed needing to be 1 and a half times the thickest part of your snake and you wont go wrong
i also use megazorb for my lot but always keep newbies on kitchen roll till i know they are pooping etc ok |

Cheers for the warm welcome and the advice which is much appreciated, I will defo keep him on paper towels untill he is eating and pooing well :)
Its killing me leaving him alone, other then changing his water daily I arnt going to touch him all next week to help him settle in. Here's a pic of his home, sorry for the quality but its off my phone! Will do pics of him once he is settled.

I tend to keep new snakes on paper to monitor their poop and stuff then move them over to aspen once Im happy they are ok :} |

I recently changed to astro turf for my cresties and leos, I checked out various suppliers, I was just gunna get the budget stuff but the P&P was crazy expensive (because obviously they expect ya to buy a lot). So I found this 6x3ft piece of greengrocers display grass for about £10 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380205588844?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649, it looks great, Ive only had it a couple of weeks so can't comment on the durability. However Id rather use a loose substrate for snakes, as mentioned ive used aspen & beech chips, but im switching to megazorb (just because its great value). |

Just a quick update, My corn snake has been very shy and has spent most of his time in his hides, he will come out but any movement and he's off in his hide, but tonight he is alot more active in his viv, he is still shy but isnt going all the way back into his hide on seeing us and is back out alot quicker so I think he is getting alot more confidence.
I am changing his water daily but not handling him or feeding him, I realy think leaving him for a week is a great idea, the difference already is great. Thanks agin to everyone for there help and info. |
