Hi everyone,

Just thought I would quickly introduce myself.

I am a full time mother of 3 and if they didn't keep me busy I also have a 7 month old sprocker pup and I also keep and breed Gambian pouched rats. We also have an aquarium of tropical fish and a razor back turtle which are hubby's babies.

I the past we have kept beardies, green anoles, tree frogs, bull frogs and pac man frogs so plenty of experience with exotics.

What's brought me to this forum is my 2 boys choice of animal for their first pet... A corn snake. After yet another visit to our favourite pet store consisting of the boys pleading with us to let them have a snake as a pet and doing some research regards the best type of snake to get them if at all they would make a good pet for a 6 and 8 yr old we decided to go for it and get our first corn snake. We got one from a local breeder in the end however as I wasn't happy that no matter how much I made it clear I wanted to hold and see the baby corn snakes in the shop they refused to as "they were quick and could be bitey"... As you can imagine this very nearly put us off getting one but after reading more on the Internet about corn snakes temperaments we decided finding a breeder would be best... And it really was the best move we did as we found a fantastic breeder who was more than happy to let us see her babies being handled and let us handle them and we have ended up with a fantastic little corn snake that goes by the name of Drago.

We don't know whether we have a he or she but we'll just go with he for the sake of not having to type he/she all the way through.

Drago is an anery... (sorry don't understand all the mottled, het and diffuse stuff to be more specific) and we have had a brilliant start with keeping our first snake. He's fantastic when the kids hold him and has eaten well from the word go and as of last night has shed with no problems.

Have to say though that the kids might have a fight on heir hands regards their idea about moving their pet snake to their room... As I'm absolutely besotted with him and after only 2 weeks of owning a corn snake am talking of getting another... For me

I will get a pic up for you all tomorrow when I have my laptop with me, in the meantime I look forward to chatting with you all

Thank you everyone for your welcome. Last night while reading through the forum i discovered Ian's site with the different morphs listed with images which has really helped me understand all the terms like diffuse and hypo etc although still not sure what 'het' means or how you know what 'het' a corn snake is but i'm still learning... and i have to say i have my next morphs in sight liking the look of the charcoal and caramel's.

as promised here are a few pic's of my little tribe:

This Tora one of my pouched rat females who i bred myself last year

One of the babies from my current one week old litter

Toby our sprocker pup

And of course what i joined this forum for... Drago our beautiful little anery corn snake

Hello and welcome to the forum. What a lot of lovely pets you have.

I can explain what het means if you like. It is to do with genetics. Most of the corn snake morphs are 'recessive'. This means that there must be two of the right morph genes to show the colour (or pattern). Your Anery corn snake has two Anery genes (also known as homozygous).
If a snake had just one Anery gene then it would look like a wild type (also called normal) and it would be heterozygous anery (meaning it has one of the anery genes). This is known as normal het anery. Snakes can carry multiple recessive genes, whilst being homozygous (these will be shown as colour morphs) so you can get lovely complicated combinations.

Hope this helped There's lots more information about this on the forum.
