my eggs are 81 days old. They have been dented inwards for around 4 weeks now (Ive increased humidity greatly and it didn't change them so they are not dehydrated.)
I know that the incubating time varies, but i didn't think it got much past 70 days..
A few of the eggs have yellowish marks on them, but mostly they are still very white.
If the snakes were dead inside them would the egg start to go bad?
Ive tried candling but due to the dents i cant really see anything, just a few veins in places.
what do people think?? |

When one of my geckos died inside the egg, it didnt start to go bad for quite a while...
If you are up to it, you could trying cutting one of the eggs just to see if everything is ok? |

Yeah i posted a thread about it, and im getting to the point where I think im going to do it shortly.
If i could know that they are dead or alive at least i can stop wondering! Im still hopeful that they will hatch, but i get the feeling that they arent going to. Ill probably give it a few days and then cut the worst looking egg.
Do you have experience cutting eggs? or have any advice? I looked on youtube but there is only python egg cutting |

I cut a couple eggs this year. Basically use your nails so u get a very small bit of egg shell then i used nail cutters. To slowly cut a line across the eggs. But do it late at night or if u have a dark room. Just so u can candle the egg to see where the most fluid is |

Well in my top egg its so dented that there is a long ridge along one side of the dent. I can candle that ridge and see that there is no snake in that bit, but there are a few veins. I think i could cut into that bit avoiding the veins, but im not sure id be able to see in cause of the dent..
I think ill give it a go soon... I cant stand not knowing any more.
Do you know how the snake sits inside the egg? is there an area where its head is most likely to be.. like an air pocket? the eggs are so dented that it looks like there cant possibly be room for a snake in some of the eggs..
Ive searched the web for hours and cant find any pictures from cut corn snake eggs.. |

Still think you should try cutting one just to double check that the dry period hasn't prevented them from hatching but im no expert - best of luck |

Cheers. I am going to.. and ill take some pictures or update you on whatever I find.
Scary thought lol, but I figure that if i cut it and the snake is alive I can leave it to incubate normally, if i cut it and the snake emerges straight away ill cut the other eggs as this will show they are ready to hatch, and if i cut it and the snake is dead, then at least i can stop wondering and hoping!!
Wish me luck guys, think im gonna go do it now - get it over with.

Okay, so I've used my dads lancet and tweezers and managed to cut open a section of the ridge on the top egg.
Only thing is, I cant see anything lol. There is just some gooey white/cream coloured stuff.
My dad thinks that this is the membrane that holds the snake. As ive cut it the gooey stuff has moved down and I can see a few veins in it, veins that were on the egg shell before.
I'm going to cut a little further so I create a flap that I can look under. I have a strong suspicion that the snake is dead though, if there is a snake! Because ive seen on vids of people cutting them that loads of clear liquid comes out, and ive not seen the gooey white stuff in any vids.
http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=1&TOPIC_ID=17360& - found this, and the goo looks a lot like the egg on the right hand side.
Gonna get back to my make shift operating room and open the egg up more. I'll let you know how it goes :/ |

There's a lot of the gooey stuff. Managed to make a flap and theres a small gap in the 'goo' and I can see a snake.
Pretty certain its dead as it isn't moving at all, and it looks tiny. Its anery in colour but really really tiny. Can see two of three bits of it and they're only 3 or 4mm wide.
This is the worst egg of the lot and has been dented for the longest, so really it should be the worst developed snake. I know that the pattern and colour is the last thing to develop, so i guess there is hope for the other eggs that they are still alive.
Now im not sure whether to make a small incision into any of the other eggs, more as assistance for when they're ready to pip, or just to leave them alone and wait.
The yellowing on the egg shells is worrying me, and if any of the others are still alive, I would have though they would be pretty much completely developed seen as the top egg has pattern and colour..
Its so hard to judge and make a decision. |

These eggs are your eggs, do what you feel is best. If I was in your position I think I would. If they are already gone then you're not harming anything, and if it is alive then wait a while before doing the others :)
Regardless, good luck |

Carry on with the one u have open. Take the snake gently out the egg but first have a small container with warm damp tissue and see if it moves once in there. |

From the sounds of it, I'd say you might be better off taking a peek in each one. For all you know, you may be incubating and entire dead clutch in worse case scenario, which I seriously hope isn't the case, but personally, after finding that in one egg, I'd want to know about the rest. |
