Hi All,
Strange situation but to cut a long story short.. I did a job for a customer last week & his son had just left home and not taken his 4 year old cornsnake with him. He was looking to re home him and asked if I knew anyone that would be interested..
Anyway I collected him yesterday morning & noticed he has abnormal lumps about 2 inches from the end of his tail. First thoughts are he may not have been looked after correctly and it may be a blockage? They feel watery though not solid.
The chap said he had fed him a mouse last thursday and he hasnt been toilet since.
Has anyone else come accross this problem before?

| Can you get a shot of him from above or something, like the whole of him or as close as you can lol. He looks like he's kinda chubby so it could be fat, maybe also weigh him if you can, but that's my guess, could be the way he is maybe wrapped round that makes the rest of him look fat. You know how often and what he was also fed? |

Thank you all for the quick replys, I've been worried about the little fella! He is lovely though. His new name is Cecil :) He did'nt have a name before.
The guy said he had been feeding him one large mouse per week.
He only had a tiny heat mat under his hide in a huge glass tank (6ft at least!)
So I have put him in a 2ft fiberglass enclosure for now with 40w reflector & dimming stat. I will be ordering a 3ft viv for him though as 2ft seems a little small for him.

| Looking at that over head pic it could be a mixer of overweightness and retained poo. Combined its making that large bulge. I think i diet and exercise is in order. Others more expierenced that i will confirm whether this is true or not. |

Wow he does look very chunky all over but that bottom end really does look exstream! 1 large mouse a week is a lot, so either fed like that for a very long time or maybe it is something else? Dom't suppose the owners said how long he's had that bulge at all? Is it definitely male and been house with no other snakes? Don't suppose you have a nice vet near you that can maybe x-ray or look at the lumps better?
My guess is that it is fat, but I'm not 100% sure as they are very bulky lumps in just one area! It kinda looks like is a lady snake that is egg bound, I imagine snakes that are egg bound to have their lumps feel more more solid but not rock hard though. I guess you could try giving him a warmish bath after he has shed if he hasn't pooped by then to see if that solves some of the bulkyness but I am kinda thinking it wont to much! |

| That really does not look right to me. He doesn't seem massively overweight so I don't think it's fat. It could be an impaction or possibly a tumour. I would give him a bath and see if it helps him go for a poo. If it doesn't then I would seriously think about getting him to a vets and getting it checked. |

Hi all,
Thanks for your feedback. The lump spreads slightly past the vent, its only on the sides and top and does not show a bulge on the bottom. It is definatly not hard but feels like sacks of water. There is a smaller one a little bit further up his body aswell but not as extreme.
I have bathed him tonight, he seemed to enjoy it! He still has not been to the toilet though.
Any other comments would be appreciated.

If you have a goo vet I would really get him to check, just to see if it something bad or if it's just fat, It would be its just worrying how its really concentrated in areas. I see your from Leicester, I think there is a reptile specialist in Leicester or very near Leicester if I am not mistaken? http://www.chinehousevets.co.uk/staff.htm, lot of people say that Craig there is really good, I have the vet number down even though the place is like 3 hours away from me as it is my nearest reptile and parrot specialist vet. It could be an infection, impaction, anything. I think unless someone else psycially looks at it and maybe runs test it may be impossible to tell what it is.
Please keep us updated. I'm kinda wondering if the guy wanted to re home him because of this now or just because he wasn't bothered :( |

I'd third that vet call, if its something sinister then you can decide if you want the responsibility of fixing it and also it may be suffering too. I did a good bit of reading on fat deposits (because I'm a nerd, official) and I dont recall seeing such a drastic step from fat deposit to normal looking tail, fat doesn't feel like fluid either, I think what ever that is it looks and sounds like it need draining.
I'll also add that this is the responsibility of the previous owner, I wouldn't have accepted it in that condition or at least have come to an agreement on vets bills before hand. |

Nothing much to add to the previous replies apart from feeding 1 large mouse weekly. I'd say once a fortnight would be more like it in a healthy snake. If it is proved to be obese then it's an exercise routine and cutting back to small / medium mice fortnightly to get him trimmed down.
Feeding a large mouse every week does not give the digestive system much time to recover. They can fast naturally for months with no adverse effect so what might seem like a drastic crash diet will probably cause you more stress than the snake.
