May well be better suited to general health, but because its a royal i shall put it here!!

This is a pointer to how important it is to check eye caps, this little royal is a rescue by me, shes tiny, at 3 years old she weighed in at 175g!!! Thats about 100g heavier than a healthy average hatchling!!

When i got her, she had retained eye caps, i didnt think much of it, they are easy to deal with......or so i though!!!

After over 2 months of treating her, and removing at least 4 eye caps from EACH eye, there were still at least 2 left on each eye.

Since i have had her, shes eaten every week without fail.
To give you an idea of what kind of feeder she is, i had her out for an hour, bathing and removing eye caps with a scalpel blade and tweezers, after an hour of me holding her head still, she instantly strike fed in my hands!!!

Today, after a few months of me attacking her eyes, she has finally just shed cleanly, removing the rest of her eye caps!!!
All round a brilliant result, and to top it off, shes now 250g!!

Here is a pic of here AFTER removing roughly 8 eye caps, i say roughly, because i really dont know how many i removed, i know it was 4 goes though, and i got at least one off each time.

it goes to show just how important it is to make sure all eye caps are removed, this is a severe case, but none the less, a lesson to us all!

Argh!! Scalpels and eyes in close proximity make me wince!! Then again, I freak out if I see someone putting in/ taking out contact lenses. Just my pet paranoia.

That is a horror story with a build up of so many retained caps. I'm glad that you have finally got them all removed. I bet the snake appreciates it too. She must have understood (in her snakey way) that you were trying to help for her to show such patience.

A small celebratory beer is in order. Well done.

I can assure you i was very very very very very very careful, and then some!
I had her out when i saw she had shed, shes not normally one for exploring, but i could kinda see her thoughts, the 'i can see!!! I am gonna check out EVERYTHING!!!'
Needless to say, she fed like a monster too!

OMG!! I don't know whats more shocking,a 3 year old female royal weighing 175g at 3 years old,or the amount of retained eye caps! Poor girl, sounds like she's been through the wars.
Well done to you on getting her sorted out. Do you think her eyesight is as it should be after that.....just wondering if having so many caps retained for so long will have had an impact on her eyesight?
She's so cute!

She is so lucky to have fell into the right hands! Well done Mike, you have gone above and beyond! Just wondering, but are you a vet? You have such reliable and supportive knowledge... and a scalpel!

I probably should have been a vet, but no, I am an aircraft tech by trade! Kate, my OH is a vet lab tech with one of the biggest vet labs in the world, to she has access to a lot of things, including a few top vets. My local vet is very good too.
