Thought this maybe somewhat helpful to compile?

I cannot stand reading/hearing about anything to do with anyone attatching human emotions to a snake. I'm pretty sure they don't feel "happy!" or "enjoying" Anything, think it's more they feel "secure"...

What about you?

I personally dont have an issue with people attaching emotions to anything i like to think that all of my pets are "happy" I do go outta my way to try and provide them with the best whenever possible it probably doesnt make any difference to them but it makes a big difference to me to know im doing everything i can.
My bugbear is peoples lack of research before purchase and i dont know so much about reptile keeping but certianly in the aqautic community there are those who believe the old myths such as a fish will only grow to a certain size if put into a smaller tank i really cant stand that!

I agree with above. The lack of research really gets under my skin.

I have in the past, when visiting schools and colleges with my reptile society, been accused of animal cruelty because I choose to keep reptiles as pets. I really do get annoyed when people with very little knowledge about keeping reptiles try to play the Big I Am and say that it is 'dangerous' and that they're 'venomous' and will 'eventually eat me'. I'd never tell a farmer how to shear a sheep. It does get ever so tiring explaining what they're really like and if it was considered cruel or a danger, they wouldn't be so openly excepted into the pet trading standards.

Another thing is that I have no time for are people who may own a much larger collection than myself, maybe with much bigger animals, look down their nose at my collection of animals. "Okay, so I don't own a retic or burm, apologies for not being worthy of your respect." I find this especially on the dark side.

I'm with Paul there. I have no issue at all with people attaching human emotions to a snake. If it means that they think more of the snake due to that then great,it means theres more chance of them doing everything they can for that animal.
Its people that don't do research, ask for advice but choose not to listen when good advice is given and people that say they can't afford vet treatment, stats etc for their snakes that rile me.
I myself don't think my snakes feel joy or love etc,but I like to think they are happy in the sense that they are kept in the right way etc.

Well said Mort... I like to think that Cornelius is happy with us coz we treat him right & spoil him rotten by giving him lots of attention & love & kisses haha, just me that last 1!

Sometimes tho when he doesn't come straight onto my hand or backs off when I go near him I'll think I've done something wrong or upset him but I know that's not true, it's just way he is.

We do get very attached to them tho...

I think it really does have to be a lack of research and that is with any pet. I did a lot of reading before I got my first snake as well as actually handling a snake that belongs to a friend. The thing my hubby was concerned about was the feeding as I'm a bit on the squeemish side, but I find it more fascinating than gross.

Even although I've not had snakes for long I found myself being asked for advice as well, so I'm really glad I did the research.

must admit very few things bug me, but if i was to really look deep its when rep owners have a go at non rep keepers because they dont like or wont handle reps. Each to their own and all that.

I can honestly hold my hands up and say I did research snakes but knowing what I know now, it wasn't enough. Also bad advice has caused me a few issues (none from this site though). I can also say that I am still learning well over a year after getting my first snake and over 2 years since first starting my research. You do see questions from people who have obviously never so much as seen a snake before let alone know anything about them and that can be irritating but most will rectify any mistakes quickly and go on to make very good reptile keepers. The only reptile keepers that fully annoy me are ones that willingly and knowingly put their animal at risk.

Hi guys and gals, been lurking for a while due to a severe dose of Ludititis. Belated best wishes to all for 2012.

I think it is the owners who get the happiness and enjoyment side of the deal from the trust returned by their pets. The snakes get the security, food and environment to keep them content.

No real bugs apart from folk who hog the middle lane of the motorway.

Thanks Emmy, hope you had a good time over the festive period.

Been doing a load of whittling and sanding of logs for my lot. Very therapeutic and relaxing. Too late to wrap them up but I don't think they will mind.

human emotions - your snake is not happy to see you, does not love its cage mate, does not enjoy having toys to play with etc etc etc
hybrids - your creamsicle is not a cornsnake
people who sell snakes because they 'no longer have the time they deserve' - your snake will thank you for leaving it in peace for a few days

etc etc etc, my battery is going flat so if I don't press submit now my reply will be los.....

HAHA Eeji, list cut short.

I'll second your 'genuine' reason for sale, not got time for them. ITS A SNAKE, 2 minutes to swap the water bowl daily, 10 minutes to feed it once a week, job done. (its amazing but all/most of these genuine reason for sale snakes are outgrowing their viv). It drives me mad, they should just be honest, ***Genuine reason for sale, Its outgrown its box and I cant be bothered to sort it out a new one so buy this snake and a set up thats not suitable for this snake***

Rant over.

i mostly live in this site but ive just been scrolling through small ads elsewhere looking for poss cheapish vivs and ive just seen an advert of a bloke with 2x 7yo corns for sale, described as 'one brown, one orange' which gives an idea of his level of research..

there are pics tho, and this is the bit that annoyed me about him.. the main picture he is holding the 'orange' one up like a piece of rope- one hand round its neck just behind the head, the other hand is *just* holding the tip of its tail- the poor thing strung out like a washing line- its body has tense little kinks all down it
I doubt we can say that a snake is embarrassed, jealous, excited or depressed, but this one looks decidedly unhappy..

I also read lots and lots of snake ads that said- "for sale because son lost interest...." which really depressed ME...

attempt below to post the pic in edit..

and you thought there was no such thing as a stupid question....

I like to think my snakes have certain emotions, but thats purely me attaching them to them, I know otherwise lol! For example, I like to think Holly enjoys coming out for a cuddle, because he bundles up in my arms and I literally have a cuddle with him. Truthfully, I know he's probably just leeching my warmth haha!
I would never attach emotions what would lead to a negative impact, like, oh, my snakes love each other, so I'll keep them together. Just silly, harmless ones :)

But what I don't like, people who look down on my because I only have corns. I LIKE corns. I don't really want any heavy bodied snakes. Just because I'm only interested in little 'beginner' snakes, doesn't mean I'm inferior to you!
