They look good on the outside though :). For the forseeable its always going to be a family car... right now its carseats r us but soon enough will be a taxi service for them and their friends pmsl so best get used to the larger family wheels :) |

I love my corsa. I only passed my test last year but insurance didnt seem too bad. its pretty good on fuel, moves well and fits loads inside (which i really took advantage of when i moved house). The downside - my teenage son wants to drive it when he is old enough |

Ford Ka. Brilliant little cars, handle like go-karts on rails. I had mine up to to 70 mph *coughs* (max legal speed). They are brilliant on fuel as well, depending on how you drive, which is a must at the moment when you need to sacrifice a leg to fill the tank. I can do around 80-90 miles on a tenner, I have done more. 'Her downstairs' will make the car drink 40 quids worth of fuel doing 120 miles. Aside from that the other option is to look for a fixer-upper to get yourself started as well. You can quite often find cars that have failed MOTs that need 200 quids worth of work to pass up for sale for a handful of fivers, so you could conceivably get a road legal machine for around the 300 quid mark which then leaves you with a bit more cash to cough up for insurance.
Or a little bike of some kind, my small bike costs about 2.50 to fill up and will do 60-70 miles on that, insurance is an extortionate 110 a year FC, We just bought our daughter a bike for Chrimbo, total cost for bike/insurance/protective gear etc only came to about 1500 quid. |

Don't worry about room in the ka, i'm 6'3" and found them surprisingly roomy, and have had one as a courtesy car a few times when my car was in for servicing an once when a nice lady in a Laguna decided she would try and drive over me. long story short, great little car, cracking fuel economy, fun to drive as K says. |

saxo's are just a 106 with different badges (literally)!! but the insurance is gunna be much higher because of their reputation. Fiat build quality isnt too hot so that kinda rules out puntos, cinqcentos and seicentos, vauxhal corsas are ok as long as you stay under 1.2 and avoid anything with SRi after the name, similar story with fiestas. Ka's are good cars tbh. definitely what id go for out of the cars mentioned so far. did you know that 3 door cars are always more expensive to insure than 5 doors because in the event of an accident everyone can get to safety quicker from a 5 door? fun fact for ya there!
THE best all round first car is a Smart four2 pulse. Alloy wheels, sunroof, flappy paddle gear box (tech taken from mclaren f1 car) 600cc turbo charged engine means its fast when it wants to be but cheap on tax and fuel, insurance group 2 so dirt cheap, sounds good, LOADS of colours, body work is clipped on so you can replace any panel if you bash something, good stereo, traction control, ABS, what more could you want!!??
Failing that get a bike like i did! £600 a year insurance and i can do over 180mph lol! |

i dont know exactly how much but not a lot at all! insurance group 2 is only more than robin reliants and other smart cars lol! a pug 106 is group 7 i think. my bike is group 19 (along with lamborghini murcielago, ferrari 458 italia etc) but i only pay £600 a year cuz u cant injure anyone else so easy! plus my bike is faster to 60 than both those cars lol (the lambo and the ferrari)! in short...GET A BIKE GET A BIKE GET A BIKE GET A BIKE!! |

I would go for the ford KA, they are reliably very good, and parts are cheap. personally, i hate them, nasty little box of a car, but thats just me!! lambos and ferraris are insurance group 20+, not 19, even my scooby is group 20. |
