OK so temperature is a big concern of mine. Can everyone tell me what they keep their temps at. For instance my current temps are
DAY Hot end 29 Cold end 23
NIGHT Hot end 21 Cold end 20

My corn temps vary from;
Cold end 9c to 23c
Warm end 28c to 32c
Day or night, cold end end varies the most. Warm end is usually around the 29c mark (usually). |

| My cool is normally about 20-22 and the hot about 27-30. My snake only normally passes through the hot for a bit and mainly prefers the cool, he will spend a little while in his warm hide but he prefers making tunnels in the aspen at the cool end. |

| warm end of most of mine is around 28*C, if you're running a mat with a thermostat the hot end temp should stay pretty constant day and night. as your hot end varies about 8*C how are you heating the viv and controlling the heat source? |

| I need to prop my heat mat up a bit higher to the bottom of my glass but I'm usually getting about 27-28 on the hot end and 20-22 in the cool end. It dropped down to about 19 when it started getting colder but the flats below me have put their heating on in the evening now so my flats got nice and warm again :) |

are you using a heat bulb? because a mat and stat set up correctly shouldnt vary as much as those figures let us know what your heating and lighting set up is so we can narrow down the problem. |

 should be ok only 1 i'd watch is the 31c during the day,just to make sure it doesn't creep up too high |

Same a K, dont bother dropping the night time temps, certainly not as low as 22 anyway, thats high end hibernation temps.
although 31 degrees is fine, i wouldnt leave it that high all the time, 27 - 28 is a nice all round average figure for the year.
All my corns stay at about 28 29 24hrs a day, the boas stay about 33 34 24hrs, because the room itself is about 26 degrees, the cold end doesnt go any lower than that. |

Well I just put the heat mat into my viv so I'm going to now turn it in during the night and turn the heat bulb of during night this wil raise my temp at night

I use a 60 watt bulb and dimming stat for 12 hours in the day. I've been running the central heating to keep the snake warm on a night and its just too warm for me. I am not happy with the bulb, Spot doesn't come out during the day and waits until the light goes off and sometimes you see him sitting waiting for it to go off.
I've just bought a 20 watt heat mat and a mat-stat to try stabilise the night time temperatures, I haven't fitted it yet as Spot is busy digesting at the moment.
So my other question is can I use my dimming stat on my heat mat if I decide to do away with the bulb as my main heat source and switch to heating with the mat, leaving a mat-stat free to any takers.
I'm thinking the light would be great if your snake liked to bask but Spot definitely does not so the mat may be a better option. Oh my head hurts, Spot's wellbeing keeps me awake wondering if he's warm enough, has he dropped too cold to digest his food etc. I have enough equipment to pretty much heat the albert hall but deciding whats the best way is a nightmare. So I'll open it up to the brain trust on here.
Oh and just testing my mat at the moment and its 20 watts and reaches a max surface temperature of 37.3 degrees centigrade so STAT YOUR MAT PEOPLE OR ELSE.

the worst offenders i've come across are the little 4" x 11" (ish) 7w mats, unstatted their temp gets waaaay hot!!! |

| Your not wrong gingerpony its a minimum load of 40 watts so that settles it, bulb through the day and mat 24/7 just to keep a nice constant of around 26 degrees and then let the bulb push up to 29-30 during the heat of the day, he does like sitting on the log once the bulb has warmed it through the day so couldn't deprive him of his favourite perch. I'm sure its a bit of a long way round a simple task but if it works all good if not I'll buy stat number 3. |

| And this mat is just a winter thing anyway, help keep him warm, my flat is usually boiling during the summer, its an insurance policy against a chill, if its warm enough the stat will just leave the mat switched off. |

Yeah, i think it was one of these that unstatted and blocked it hit over 200 degrees C.
Scary stuff, thats smoke, fire and losing bits of your house!!!! |
