| hi all i have just brought my first snake, i was told at the pet shop that my corn snake was a male and was about one year of age. i brought him with a started kit, and was told that the tank would be fine its not all that big at all what size tank would do him? and second i was told to feed him once every ten day? on hopper mouse which the petshop sold me but i have read that i should feed him every 7 day? just a little help would be good thanks all have a good day. i cant seem to up load pics :-( |

cant really help you with the size of tank unless we know the size of your new one.
you can feed your snake every 7 days thats what mine are all on, the shop would have been feeding it just enough to get by to keep their costs down.

I am not sure if this is of any help, but the rule of thumb that we follow is that if the snake's length = the length + depth of the tank then he would need a bigger one. Do you know approximately how long he is and the dimensions of the tank?
I am not sure if you were told this but we always suggest you follow the one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)....no handling or feeding for the first week to allow your snake to get over the stress of the move and for him to get used to the new smells and his new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so he can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. You mustnt worry about him not feeding for that week, corns are a lot hardier than we realise and going for a week without food will not do them any harm, no matter how small they are. You are rarely advised this in a lot of pet shops  but it is an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you.
Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you  . Like the fact that so many shops will sell a snake with a starter set up, but not let you know that you need a thermostat to control the heatmat and a digital thermometer to monitor the heat - 2 vital pieces of equipment. I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
I am sure you have already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. The best place to look is Care Sheet helpful. Also have a look at Your 1st snake and another good topic to look at is Setting Up A Hatchling Corn Snake - My 101, I know your corn isnt a hatchling but a lot of the principles will be the same.
Sorry for the information overload  ....you will get used to that from me !! Why dont you do a post in the Introductions section so we can all welcome you and your corn properly  .

Well done for finally working out how to upload pics....it is not easy !! And I am so glad you did....he is beautiful!
With regard to names we have a thread called Snake Names which has a few  suggestions that might give you some inspiration.
As for his tank, have you worked out its dimensions in relation to his length? It is hard to tell from the pics but I THINK, from the pic of him in it, he does look as though he is getting a bit too long for it....but these pics can be deceiving. At the moment the tank is very bare for him and he will probably be feeling quite exposed. With glass it is always best to cover 3 sides with something like aquarium backing paper, so that it is more enclose and he will feel a lot safer. He would also probably appreciate some greenery, which means he will be able to move from hide to hide without necessarily being seen. You could try putting in a branch as it is quite a high tank and that would certainly make it look less bare....and some corns are climbers! Have a look at Show us your setups, I know it is long but it will give you some ideas as to what you could do to help decorate his tank and make it feel more like home for him .
At the moment it looks like your substrate is spread evenly over the base of the tank. You need to have a sprinkling over the heatmat and then deepen it into the cool end so that he can burrow.
I am assuming you are using a heatmat? Do you have a stat controlling it? From the pic it looks like you have a thermometer part way up the side of the tank (is that what the round thing is?). This will only be measuring the ambient temperature and not the temperature at ground level, which is where your snake it. Also, if it is a dial thermometer it is about as useful as a helicopter with an ejector seat (to borrow another forum member's expression ). A lot of us use these Digital thermometers, they are cheap but more importantly they come quickly and are accurate. You also need to be sure the probe for the stat and the thermometer are correctly positioned, this thread may help - Probe Positioning. I cant stress enough how vital it is to have a stat controlling your heatmat and a digital thermometer monitoring it (and apologies if you have these , but its always best to check!).
Once again I need to say sorry for the information overload....as I said, you will get used to that from me ....but what is important is that you are trying to do what is best for your snake and all we want to do is help . I just hope I have managed to be of some help towards you having a happy snake!

I'd start by putting a wanted add onto your local freecycle site. This is a great place to offer your unwanted goods and also to receive unwanted goods. I've had a couple of fish tanks off of there over the past year or two and I have seen one or two vivs in my area.
Failing that depending on cash availability, the usual cheap alternative is one of the RUBS (Realy useful boxes) or a wooden viv. |

| hi there taz devil, my local pet shop asked me £100 for a new wooden viv for my snake, if i dont find a new tank soon i will have to buy it, as i feel the one hes in at the moment is too small, thanks for your help :-) |

Kellog is approximately 5yrs old and Silvesta about 4yrs old....I got them as adults with no real history so can only give a rough guess. But Kellog is 4'5" and Silvesta has just reached 3'6".
I have heard of fish tanks being used as vivs....this thread - Glass Vivarium? talks about converting a fish tank and if you use the search button I am sure you will find other topics discussing it as well.
Taz's suggestion of looking on FreeCycle is a good one, you can also try sites like GumTree and PreLoved - I know they sell pets but I THINK you can sometimes get offers of 2nd hand equipment as well. What about Ebay? Although remember the saying....Buyer Beware!
How good are you at DIY? You could make one.

| I got a good deal on a viv off eBay for my bearded dragon 3ft viv for £45 so there are deals out there to be had, as far as DIY goes not all that good lol, xx |
