I am looking to buy in bulk for karma... substrate, food. you know the rest. what is best site to buy this from at a cheap cost?

Hi, CSN, me too!
Now that my lot are bigger and all will soon be on small/medium mice and beyond, I'm looking to find a food delivery service that will deliver frozen to W Yorks, even at the cost of freezer space.
I do know that there is a horse bedding product called 'Aubiose' that seems widely available from farm/equestrian suppliers - apparently you can get a huge bale for the same price that you'll pay for a small bag of aspen in that pet supermarket, and to all intents and purposes it will look the same as aspen bedding. Yet to suss this out myself but other people swear by it.

| frozen direct are good for prices but dont like the fact you have to spend a minimum of 15 quid with them most other sites are just pick an pack and you are done |

a good frozen supplier recommends a minimum purchase so that your mice are still frozen when you get them - order too little and they will thaw out before they get to you :(
If you don't wat to order the minimum mice, a good tip is to pad out the order with frozen chicks - they are mega cheap and can be binned when your order arrives :)
my recomendation for a frozen supplier is A&N Frozen (http://www.anfrozenfoods.co.uk/) please do not let their delivery cost put you off because the lower price of the mice more than offsets it for the total order.
FOr substrate I use Aubiose which is less than a tenner for a 20kg bale. If you are having trouble sourcing it then contact the company direct and they will help you find your nearest stockist, then phone the stockist and ask them if they have a distributor any closer. Its probably best not to tell them that you will be only buying one bale every few months so they will be more helpful ;)

was just about to ask a similar question! got my aspen off ebay quite reasonable but that auboise sounds good value for the long term so will be sourcing that next
always wondered about the whole frozen mice delivery thing...if they thaw out which i'm sure they would after a couple days in the post can you refreeze them? i just don't get how you can buy something to be delivered that is frozen!! :s |

Me too, Miss Mystra - I was checking out a firm who were honest enough to say that they couldn't guarantee mice arriving frozen, but as they were bred by firm and fresh killed, refreezing oughtn't to be a problem. I've read other reports that the mice arrive from some companies still frozen. Some companies pack in polystyrene and use next-day service, others pack in dry ice. I think it would depend on the amount of mice you ordered - if you have several snakes on larger items you could order a fair weight and it would stay frozen? A small bag of pinkies might not.
Still sussing all this out for myself - it would be good to have a good supply in the freezer - but also don't want them hanging about in there too long - snakes are such fussy little gits! But definitely tempted! Thanks you guys who've posted names of firms. |

Thanks for the name of this frozen food company, their prices are really good and now we have 2 snakes I'm sure we would spend the £15.
The other option regarding the minimum order value is that a few people who live in the same area could go through one person to place a big order and they then could collect the mice etc from the person who ordered the items.

| Try http://www.reptilekeeping.co.uk ,this is a good site for buying mice etc in bulk, plus they sell loads of other reptile items too. I highly recommend them, I've used them a few times, deliveries are quick and their prices are pretty good. |

Well, I'm still lost for words ... and that's not somethng that happens often.
After reading the recommendations for A&N I looked up their price list and delivery charges, calculated what I could fit in the freezer, and, being new to this game, rang up so that I could ask questions.
VERY friendly service - I learned that I didn't have to take a 50 pack of pinkies as long as I was ordering enough to warrant a delivery and remain frozen. Which I was - only Cy needs pinkies these days, and at the rate she's eating I'm hoping to move her up a mouse size soon (touch wood.) The larger sizes of mouse keep better than pinks, too. I placed the order and was told they'll come on Friday, hopefully before midday.
When I came off the phone I did a bit of quick maths to compare these prices with the ones at my local shop. Even allowing for delivery charges, I've saved £200!
That's for food for about 6 months for 5 corns of assorted sizes and one young royal. Also means that I don't have to worry about walking up to the shop in bad weather or if I'm feeling antisocial.
Now just hoping I've left enough room in the freezer for the Haagen-Dazs!

Hey, CSN, I will feel a bit mean if I don't suggest that, if you have transport, would you like to share my order, since you've only the one snake?
I live in Wakefield centre, end of Westgate if you know Wakefield at all - don't have transport myself I'm afraid. Can't tell what Karma's on by photo but I've ordered 100 hoppers (21p each) and 100 small mice (22p) - delivery for the whole lot is £20 but proportional cost would be fractional for one snake's needs - and since they're not delivering till Fri it might be ok to add to order.
Another good idea would be, if you know other snake keepers in Leeds, put in one order and share delivery costs as RyanRed suggested.
