So the heatmat melted the plastic. Putting card between the mat and tub is just putting something even more compatible in danger of catching fire.

If that doesn't inspire you to buy a stat, then just think what the case would have been if the snake was laying on the melted plastic! You would have ended up with a snake with bad burns, requiring vet treatment.

For those of you without a stat, get one, don't chance it, you could end up with a house fire, worst case, you could end up with a badly burnt snake.

I don't see why people play the ignorance card, especially with nearly every thread involving a heatmat the importance of a stat is made clear.

My RUB has never got a hole melted though, nor ever warped neither have any of my "other plastic tubs". I think you would know by the read out of a thermometer if it was getting too hot or, by actually feeling how hot it is before it started to melt a hole.

That's because you are intelligent enough to use a stat.

Forgive me if im wrong, but I can't help but feel the 'ignorance card' was aimed at me...
Like I said, I didn't have it statted, because I hadnt got the entire set up or my snake yet.
I had every intention of getting it statted before I got my snake, thats what I did as soon as I got my glass tank.
The temperature was still 82, so there was no way I could have detected it was happening, I just looked under the substrate and there was a hole :\
and I think even with a stat it would have melted, I don't know why it did, it just did. maybe it was a flimsy tank, I dont know.
All I can say is I'm glad it happened when it did, and not while my snake was in there.

here we go:

It wasn't aimed at you, we understood what you said about how you were in the setting up period and hadn't gotten a stat yet, which is understandable, very few people will get the equipment then NOT set it up.
If I buy equipment for something, I set it up before I've unpacked the rest of the shopping.

Rachie do you know who made the plastic container?

Was it an Exo Terra Faunarium just out of interest?

Best wishes

What make was the heatmat? One brand of heat mat and some bought off e-bay that have been manufactured in such a way seem to be the plastic melting culprits. Believe it or not, these heatmats have also burnt holes straight through wooden vivs and shattered glass vivs so it's not an issue of plastic or not.

Back to the OP it will be fine without a piece of card, RUBs have feet so if their is any needed air circulation as such the feet will sort it out.

I don't know the make of the plastic box thing, but it was an exo terra heat mat.

I am sorry if you think it was aimed at you, but, set correctly, with a stat, that mat would not burn anything, unless its faulty.

My comment was aimed at people who know a stat is needed, but choose to ignore it,
Question is, do you still think that its aimed at you?

Or, you could use a stat, do it properly and generally you do it once.
if you don't understand why i get pi**y about stat issues, Google snake burns, if that doesn't open your eyes, well, nothing will.

Mike, I don't think It was aimed at me now, I sort of just read it and was like *defences up* sorry about that.
I know why you said it because I too know people who don't use stats, and it is irresponsible. Thats why it got to me, cus I didnt wanna seem like an irresponsible air head.

At lot of people have had the problem you described with exo terra mats. I know their are several different ones exo terra make but their is one only ment for heating glass tanks and that it. Apprently it's something to do with the backing of the mat.
