Hi everyone,
I am so confused at how to set my viv up for my Corn Lexx, i have bought a wooden (melamine) vivarium which is 36"x18"x18", i have bought a heatmat to cover 1/3 of the tank floor and have got a habistat thermostat to keep check on temperature of heatmat.
I wud like to know if i place the heatmat under the substrate, and were do i put the sensor for the thermostat, at the top of the viv or near the floor close to the heatmat.

| the heatmat should sit on the base of the Viv, with about 1cm of substrate ove it. The stat probe should be positioned directly on the mat, held in place with a hide, rock or using aquarium sealant to hold it in place. |

As Gmac said the heatmat should sit inside the viv on the base and the thermostat ptobe should be in direct contact with the surface of the mat. Also worth adding is that you should attach the probe of your thermostat to the probe of a digital thermometer using rubber bands (do not use tape to secure them together as tape is bad news for snakes). The two probes together should then be touching the surface of the mat by pinning them down with the edge of a hide or glued in place with silicone. If you choose to use the hide method make sure you use the edge of the hide so the probes are not inside the hide as if the snake lays on them it can interfere with the regulation of the mat and give you false readings on the thermometer.

| Does anyone cover the heat mat with anything ie. Some lino etc... or do you just put the substrate straight on top? |

| Some on here do personally i dont I just pin the mat down with a heavy hide and i aint had any problems. |

i used Aqua seal and stuck the mat down to the wood. Is like it aint even there.
DO NOT USE GLUE OF ANY OTHER KIND THAN AQUA SEAL

Hi Steve,
I know a lot of people on here cover their heatmats, however I fail to see the point as you will be heating (eg. lino) to the same temp as you would just raise the heatmat to, about 29/30 degrees.
Just don't heap too much substrate on the heatmat, mine tends to move it about so it can lie directly on it, just make sure your probes are accurate and aren't in a place where your snake will move past and dislodge them as this can send the temps sky high (I know, whoops) |

I think the idea of putting Lino or something similar over the heat mat, is to stop substrate getting under it and pushing to the top etc. |
