It's one of the most important things to have.
Without a stat your snake could cook, as heatmats have been known to reach over 100C, and your corn snakey will need 30C on the hot end, max.
Please tell her that you need one ASAP, as the pet shop (as seems to be the usual unfortunately) doesn't have a clue what it's talking about.
You'll need a stat and also a thermometer. (preferably one that keeps a record of the highest and lowest temp it's got to)
A suggestion is to cable tie the stat probe and thermometer to the heat mat, as then you little snake can't move them off and potentially harm itself.
Good luck! |

You could try posting in the classified to see if anyone's got a secondhand stat to sell. A few weeks ago someone was selling a Habistat mat stat for £20 - it's sold now but there must be others about. Save you a bit of money, and your Mum might come round to the idea if you can get it cheaper.
Goood luck! |

its defo needed, becos high temps can be fatal, it can also affect food digestion and could possibly contribute to a snake not feeding and having a bad temperment when trying to handle. ebay is a good place to look and i think bluelizardreptiles.co.uk have sum sort of sale on habistat mat stats sumthing like £23 inc postage |

If ur mum wont buy you a stat I am afraid I wouldnt get the snake either. Stats are an ESSENTIAL piece of kit without it your snake could die. Sad as it is I have heard this soo many times about pet shops telling people they dont need one and for me this just highlights the problem that people with little or no knowledge can walk into a pet shop and walk out with an animal that is relying on your integrity for it to have as best a life as it can in captivity. This is bad enough when its a dog or a cat or even a rabbit but a snake relies on you for even the minimal enviroment issues such as heat which i am afraid needs regulation for them to perform vital functions such as digestion. If your Mum wont buy you a stat and basically all the other equipment you need then I wouldnt get the snake. There really is no case for cutting corners when it comes to an animals welfare. |

@ crazy jj and mouse: it was weird at this pet shop because the animals were loooked after properly (minus the stats)and the owner had some corn snakes of their own, im not sure whether the owner bred them or not though. i had a look at some hatchies feeding there and they ate really well despite not having a stat - weird or what? |

BlueLizardReptiles has a sale on at the minute, Habistat Mat Stat Thermostat £16.99 + £4.95 p&p. That's the cheapest i've found, even on Ebay. |

What rep shop do you use Joe? Cos I know one who don't use stats for their rubs, but their temps are always perfect and their hatchies all feed beautifully. |

I'm supprised pet shop owners don't advise on stats, cos let's face it, if they sold a stat to every customer that buys a snake then they would make £££s more annually!
It's like buying a dog without taking it for it's injections!

I don't use stats for my rubs. I have a constant day temp of 29 degrees. At night I pull the rubs further off the mats. No temp problems at all. But I agree, once they're in a viv stats are a must. |

I check my temps every time I walk past my rubs and I've never gotten a temp over 31degreesC. I don't see how these mats can reach 100 degrees, when they don't even rise far past 30 |

well all i can say is 99.9 percent of members will say a stat IS ESSENTIAL that many people can't be wrong. I'm only saying this thru concern and mean no offence |

I took the photos from the link that Gmac showed on the previous page. That mat was a fully functioning mat (and still is in use), yet when unstat'd can become dangerously high temperatured. Has anyone actually ever read the literature that comes with a mat???
/ninja edit Shall save some time.

Clicky on the pic will bring you to a supersized version of the pic, what you're looking for is the yellow square right in the middle that has blue highlighted text inside. I highlighted that text for a reason, it specifically says: "With species that have particular requirements....." Can anyone tell me what the particular requirement is for cornsnakes??? What about Kingsnakes??
2 totally different temperatures are required for 2 apparently similar species. Hence why it's possible to have 2 identical mats running in 2 identical vivs off one stat when it's only corns housed. A corn and a king in identical vivs with identical mats would require individual stats, because the particular requirements that those species of snake need in terms of heat is different. |
