There are circumstances that can cause a mat to overheat, lack of air supply, ie being completely covered, I saw an experiment a while ago on rf.uk, the smallest mat reached over 200 degrees, and that was in a normal setup, just with the mat covered, there is plenty of evidence about that shows some really quite unpleasant burns on snakes, and in fact, there is one case that the mat caught fire, and then burnt down a purpose made reptile enclosure in someones garden, not only did they lose the whole building, but also something like 12k worth of snakes, a couple survived, but will be permanently scarred from melted plastic.

For the sake of 30 quid, would you prefer some almighty vets bills? Potentially the loss of the animal, and some severe grief from forum people??
Why take the risk??

I never used to use stats, I was the same as you, then I learnt.
Now I have 12 stats (some twins), I even have 4 spares just incase.

Get a stat, the chance is not worth it. And whilst you are researching, research thermal blocking, that'll open your eyes!

i know your mum probably expects the shop to know best but i just wanted to say, just because your snake LOOKS ok in the plastic viv with no stat doesnt mean they are

my first snake died because of exsessive regurgitation caused by the heatmat being too warm (i too was a complete noob) and i had no stat.

she was fine when i brought her home and my "reptile specialist" (later found out to be money grabbing beeeeps) had said i had everything id need,( faunarium, aspen, water bowl & heatmat) so off i went and for the first few weeks she was fine but then she was regurging every meal and not drinking, at one point her water dish (metal) which was in the COLD end burnt me when i was doing water changes.

please think of your snake as others have said if the mat feels AT ALL warm to you then your snake will be BURNING but not necessarily visibly burning.

please dont let anything like the pictures above or my story happen to you.

i know we are all here to learn but when advice is given and you ignore it then people will be really reluctant to help when you have any further problems.

That was me.
I assumed it was the shorter 4 lettered word for gentlemans danglies.
After seeing your comment, and Gmac's I thought I'd remove the stars and add a bit of comedic element to it, to show that no offence was taken.

That's the first time I've heard of the male genitalia being called comedic element.

(Though as a woman I've often thought it ....)

Well, hi, Josh, good morning, sorry to leave you dangling ... (OOPS - sorry, I'll rephrase that!)

Errm, where was I ... Ah yes, sorry to hear about the magic marker. You could always pretend it was St Patrick's day, I suppose...

Exit Bats, still cackling ....
