Was just about to respond with the same thing. Hence why they say that attempting to suck the venom out is a bad thing (unless it's a film), otherwise you end up with 1 envenomated person and one poisoned person. Both potentially life threatening. |

Thats not true either, A king Cobra is not harmless, provoked or otherwise. A cornsnake is not harmless either, its capable of puncturing the skin, and sometimes its not provoked, or not what you would think was provoked anyway! To say all snakes are harmless is crazy, go find yourself a black mamba, see how harmless they are when not provoked!
Peoples reaction to snakes is fuelled by the media, the media portray all snakes are being beyond evil, and incredibly dangerous. Of course this is rubbish, however, its irresponsible owners that give the media their ammunition!
Going back to your quote, tell me something, if you handle a mouse, then get the snake out, when it bites you, is it then harmless?? Afterall, you havent provoked aggression, just a feeding response!
If you think all snakes are harmless unless provoked, you are more than welcome to come back down here and have a crack at changing the water in the Hogg Islands viv. Without the use of the grabber or gloves!

Oh, shucks, I missed all this - I was so zonked I fell asleep at 9 ...
I was actually entertaining a journalist yesterday - my brother in law's dog, who writes a column in a newsletter for Cwm Penmachno near Betwsy Coed, but he's very responsible, and down there they have a big population of slow worms.
Sweep is the only journalist I know of who respects reptiles ...
ps, don't leak this to the tabloids or there will be a big shock horror probe about a dog chained to a computer in a wild Welsh valley inhabited by thousands of blood crazed legless lizards ... |

Actually in partial defense of the saliva response, it would also depend on the type of venom. There are neurotoxic, cytotoxic and hemotoxic venoms. Each has different properties and most can potentially kill you if untreated, some could kill you regardless.
Or is there 2, it's nearly 5am and I'm not actually awake properly. I think the cyto and hemotoxic may fall in the same category.
Bearded dragons for example have a hemotoxic venom, as do rattlesnakes. Hemotoxic will cause thinning of the blood and tissue inflammation and severe pain, have a thinky about that the next time you go to finger feed your Beardie. |

I agree, partially wrong, neurotoxic venom can be broken down by digestive enzymes, haemotoxic cannot. I can think of 4 venom classes, haemotoxic, neurotoxic, myotoxic, and cytotoxic. |

The media arent always innacurate, its just they dont bother to tell both sides of the story, any snake is aggressive, all snakes can bite, thats what the media play on, the dont bother with the softy side of them, that doesnt sell papers. Go to the sun website and search for snakes, theres 3 i can think of straight away, 'n*bhead' Marvin, with a false water cobra, a couple of lads with a carpet python they 'made' bite a young lad, and a guys unsupervised burm in the garden eating the neighbours cat! Notice how all three stink of incompetence though. |

(Cringe)
Yup, exactly what we've been saying - hype and sensationalism to sell a story and b***er accuracy. And as you say, it's always the idiots that get the limelight.
I read another one a while back, about a 'terrified housewife' who found a snake in her washing machine, curled up on the dry laundry ... (anyone other than me find this sounds highly implausible?) Anyway the cops were called (Allo, allo, allo!) and there's a pic of a brave policewoman nabbing the snake with a hook. (Let's be having you!)
It was, as you may have guessed, a highly venomous, blood crazed, vicious and savage ... corn snake.
(And then there's another tale of a guy who found a snake waggling down before his eyes from his car roof as he was driving along in the rain ... It was, of course, a windscreen viper!!)
Sorry, couldn't resist ... |

I read about that as well, it even scared her 2 'little boys', they were 17 and 19 I think.
In regards the washing machine incident, I do believe it is possible, and I know that someone on here knows it is as well, and little Jally apparently has a lovely shine to him now. So if you want your snake to shine, use Daz. |

OMG LOL. That must have been Ariel shock! Hope the snake was found before they turned the machine on! |
