Turns out she has a tumour near her back end... it's strange to think that 10 mins before going to the vets she was happily eating grass. I know some people will think it's just a chicken but I know all my chickens very well and they all have individual personalities.
She's the bottom left Brown one, there all pets so they are all easy to tell apart |

Oh I think we understand. According to the great unwashed "we only keep snakes"! And I know how sad I would be if I lost mine. I think we're designed to become emotionally attached to the things we are responsible for looking after. Maybe it's our 'parenting' gene? So regardless of whether it's a chicken, a snake or a dog, loss is still loss. And the pain of loss is the same for all of us.
So you certainly have my sympathies. |

It's better that I don't rant :/ I would have liked it if the vet did do a biopsy on the lump to see exactly what it was but I think at any size because of where it was, she wouldn't have lived through the operation. Boyfriend didn't take it that well either .
I don't know how chickens think but I don't think they have really noticed to be honest. There is a weird quietness in the coop now though but I'm not sure if that's because they know something up or if the noiseless Warren is now in the ground :/
Non of us would have guessed a tumour at all though, we all thought she was egg bound to start then an impacted crop... its so sad to think that the tumour effected her that much near her back end that it would swell up her crop so she couldn't eat or poo that much... we expected the ex batteries to go first since they are the oldest not one of the younger chickens.
That's 7 animals dead in 4 months... |

aw no im so sorry i was heartbroken when we lost first lost some of our chickens - the first one in particular was the hardest as she was the first we got, dont let anyone tell you losing a pet isnt hard - a pet is a part of the family regardless of whether they show any affection back RIP McCluckers xx |

Sta~ple, I am so sorry to hear about Mc.Cluckers. You went through a lot with her trying to work out what was wrong....and you are right that it must have been a surprise that it was a tumour at her back end rather than everything else you had eliminated.
She was definitely not 'only a chicken'! I know some people may react differently....but I know that your chickens are not just there to lay eggs etc....but they are your pets and you know them each individually and they know you....they are family.
At least she didnt suffer as she was happily eating grass one minute and then at the vets, where the diagnosis was made. I know you would have liked the vet to have done more, but maybe it is a case of not prolonging what Mc.Cluckers might have been going through and putting her through a stressful operation she would probably not have survived. Sometimes we have to chose to do nothing....and although it is the hardest decision, it is sometimes the best one.
