Everyone is moving house at the moment and I spent ages yesterday evening really thoroughly scrubbing Bellatrix's new vivarium for her (it's not been used for aaaaages and was a bit grubby). It came with a filthy old heat mat that was a bit worse for wear, so my plan was to take that one out and put it under Luna's rub where the condition of it didn't matter, and put the heat mat that Luna was using into Bella's new home.
I unscrewed the plug and discovered that instead of a "normal" plug, it was a two pin thingy that was masquerading as a proper UK plug. Absolutely no way to undo it so I could put the heatmat into Bella's viv and feed the wire out of the hole in the back. So now I've had to spend another tenner on another heat mat (and I made sure it was a proper UK plug on this one!) and Bella is still stuck in her small old tank that's really too little for her now.
A great big BAH!!

It's always the same with best laid plans n all that. Is it not possible to cut the plug off and rewire a new plug on it. I'm useless with electrics so don't know if that is safe or possible lol.

Is it one of those wooden vivs with the white vents? I cut a tiny hole in there for my heat mat to go through, so you put the entire plug through it then the vent back on and just line it up so it goes through the hole. My viv was bought locally though so the VivExotic or other ones may be different. Good luck :) |

I haven't got the right tools for cutting and stripping the cable and if I went out and bought them and discovered it was all mad overseas wiring I;d just have to go out and buy a new heat mat as well as spending £££ on the tools!
I think it's a home-made viv Trevah; there's no vents like you describe. There's just a strip covered with wire mesh across the back at the top and a nice hole just the right size for a cable (but not a plug) to go through.
New heat mat on its way... hang on in there Bels! |

Nearly all mats are 2 wired inside the main cable, these are normally brown and blue. If it was different coloured it shouldn't have made much odds anyway as they can take the voltage in either direction. They're not polarity specific. |

Won't you have to take off the plug with your new heatmat though to get it through the hole? :p |

I use scissors to cut the old plug off, and to make a split in the outer rubber, then after pulling them out a bit from the sheathing, I run a scissor blade round the wire coating, and pull off the excess. The rest is either screwdrivers, or makeshift knife!
(Or I did before I had the right tools anyhew!!)

I use my teeth for stripping the wires, I don't see the point of having lovely sharp teeth without using them as tools like they were originally developed for. |

Yes, I can do a normal UK plug but this wasn't a normal UK plug. It was a FREAK. It was like a European plug but narrower, and was plugged into a UK plug. |

Ha, I'm always using my teeth for stuff and that's what I say when people look shocked! I'm not sure mine are strong enough for cable stripping though |
