So im sat here at work taking calls fixing tv's and phones like normal (i work for virgin media tech support), and i get a call off a very nice lady, who cant remember her password. we get the password changed and she tells me its the name of her snake so she will never forget it, any ways we get chatting about snakes and she tells me shes got a artical being published in next months practical reptile magazine, or something to that effect.
When i asked her if she had heard of TCSF she said no only The Reptile Forum, where she had recieved a very cold reception after posting to try and start a gathering in her area (Sorry for being vague cant give out any details :p)for reptile lovers to get together and chat and make new friends (scaly or not :P) i thought this was a very good idea i know theres one near where i live that gather once a month, i was just wondering if anyone else has this sort of thing available to them or if the guys from here get together for meetings ?
I do find it hard to believe that anyone here was mean your all really nice!

There's a chance it could've been another forum, it has a reputation for being a bit 'verbal', although there's a lot of useful info on there it has been known to regularly end up with people getting abused purely because they have a setup that different to someone elses. That is the only 'reptile forum' I could think of that might've got a response like that, not us. |

Agree with Kehhlyr Azz, I think I can probably guess which Reptile Forum she tried out and it is such a shame (but not a surprise) that she got such a cold reception. Do you know what sort of snake she had? If you talk to her again you could point her in the direction of here or one of our sister sites....if she hasnt been put off forums for life .
I would love to meet up with some like-minded corn snake lovers....especially if they were forum members, but there is nothing near me that I know of. How I wish I live 'up North'!!

Am not gonna hands down defend that forum, because I have been on there for over 2 years and I know what people are like, and I know who, but, its not that bad. Its a very good forum, yes there are some tools, but there are also some very well known and respected herpers on there that do like to help out people. People forget that some like to do things by the book, meaning that the snake should have the most natural setup possible, so when someone comes on with a baby royal in a tub with a toilet roll and a bit of tissue they don't like it. Don't forget that not everyone is as tolerant as others, that's the way of the world, this forum is quite sheltered in that respect, mainly because it has a fairly small number of regulars its been able to be kept in check, with over 45k people on rfuk, its much more diverse and harder to rein in the egos.
That said, there are a lot of nobs on there, and it can be hard work, but its worth the aggro sometimes, sometimes not. Hopefully your customer will appear on this or an affiliated forum and get a warm welcome, of which I have no doubt. |

It would be good if she tried this forum, she would find a warm welcome and she could share her love of snakes. Regards to meetings....no nothing around here. Would be a great thing to do if there are other members in the area that would like to....... |

I definitely agree with what you say Mike. Have never been a member or posted but have browsed a fair bit. Think main problem I find is that being someone who knows so little about corns I would be overwhelmed by the responses, not know whose answers I should respect and whose I should ignore and scared to post in fear of being attacked....And that is just from the little I have looked at it.
I think for those who DO know what they are talking about and can stand their ground then it probably is a good place to be, it is just a shame that there are those who have nothing better in their life than to have a go at others who are just trying to get answers and care for their reps. But then we have had a few of those here who wont listen to advice and feel they know best, whose egos are more important than anything else....
And you are definitely right about this forum being easier to 'control' (not that the Mods and Admin control us of course ) and I think there is definitely a more 'friendly' welcome and support because there are so fewer people....there is no way 'that site' can offer what we can, and that is not their fault.

I disagree, there is a vast amount of help and advice for new people, the forum had more than doubled in size in the last year, that's nearly 20,000 new people, and a lot have never kept before, and totally new to the hobby. The people on any forum are controlled, hence the rules, just on a forum this size its easier to cut people off before it gets out of hand. 'That site' offers vastly more information than this one, even on corns, mostly because there are a lot more experienced keepers on there, there just is no way that this forum, as good as it is, can compete with it, its too big. Avoiding a site like that because you are scared of the responses says to me you are not 100% confident, and as I know you are not doing anything specifically wrong, there's no need. |

Re-the original Question, I'm on the South coast (Southampton) so if anyone's close it would be great to have a meet, even if it's without the snakes!
(Altho pics made into badges with their names on might be amusing, 'Snakes anonymous!') |

Can I be stupid and ask what site your on about? I'm guessing its not any website linked to this one? If its the one I'm thinking of then yeh, a lot of people need to smacked lol as any difference of opnions that you voice there is suicide. I've seen people go "no your setup is wrong/viv size/heating method is all wrong" when it's acceptable, it's just doesn't look like everyone else but your going to get that on every site. I've found this site helpful and I'm not new to snakes.
I think mahybe the only person I could meet up with on here is crazyjj. I know some people that keep rpetiles but I'm not sure I would want to go for a drink with them, I'm happy seeing them in the petshop and us all staring at all the reptiles. |

Ok it was the site I was thinking of. There always seems to be arguments there though and people trying to inflate their e-penis but it's funny sometimes.
I don't see why she would get horrible comments back though? I would have thought meeting and actually talking to a real person about reptiles and possibly being able to see them would beat sitting at home typing about them :s |

i have to say ive been on both dark side and RFUK the people here are alot nicer, its a friendlier forum, i think theres a very thin line between a good discussion and a terrible flaming but for the person on the end of either its hard to tell for sure. There are always "hot topics" eg multiple snakes in one viv, but ive always had a good reception here and i did point her this way and to the sister sites, she did have a corn, so maybe shes read this and is a bit happier now :) |

Personally I have never been on any other forum than this one and I have always found the people on here really freindly. Sure I have disagreed with some things said but then keeping corns is like that. What works for one does not nessararily work for another so that is bound to happen on any forum. In my own experience of this forum I think when this does happen it is handled very appropriately and swiftly by the mods which should be said is a credit to them. Having run a few groups myself yes that level of administation is easier with smaller groups than large and in that respect i think this one benefits from it. Personally I will sticking with here. I took a breif look at the other one and was a bit overwhelmed to be truthfull. |
