Am so sorry to read all this Adele. Read your other request for help in the 'Strange Behaviour' thread and suggested you make your own thread....and then found that you had. It means I know how much you have wanted a snake for many years and now you have got Dave and this is happening. I cant begin to put myself in your position.

Mike is very experienced and knows what he is talking about, so listen to him....and no matter what happens I would report that vet who told you to turn off the heatmat....I, also, cannot believe they would give that advice.

I am hoping and praying that he is still alive when you wake up and that you can contact a reptile vet near you - you have The Grange Veterinary Hospital in Darlington (01325 465371), Jacqui Paterson in Cleveland (01642 587777), Holly House Veterinary Surgery in Leeds (011320 369030), International Zoo Veteinary Group in West Yorkshire (01535 605033), The Animal Zone in Lancaster (01524 69825) and others - http://www.reptilevets.co.uk/search.php. Even if none of these are near you then RING THEM.

My thoughts are with you, Michael and Dave.

Adele, I am so sorry to hear about Dave....it must have been awful finding him like that, even if you must have realised that his death was imminent....nothing prepares you for it.

Considering the fact that he had been found by his previous owner, who knows what parasites or illness he may have picked up in his time as an escaped snake....so you must not in any way blame yourself for what has happened to him. You did everything you could for him and showed how much you care by finding us and asking for help.

I do hope it hasnt put you off keeping corns now that you have had this experience with Dave....yes you have suffered the grief of loosing him, but you have also known the joy of keeping him and you could offer another corn a loving home with a loving owner.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss....many people would say that he is 'only a snake', but we know he was so much more to you.

i am so very sorry for your loss, it sounded like pneumonia to me. i know we can try the best for our animals and fuss over them and everything and they can still get ill and die, and on the other hand theres people out there who just keep their reptiles as display pets and dont bother checking their health and they live on to their maximum life span- a very unfair world we live in. and i know it can knock an owners confidence when a reptile gets ill even tho they have set their enclosure up with the perfect temperatures and set up etc, it can seriously knock an owners confidence in being "worthy of owning a reptile" i know because i am going through this myself, i recently lost my baby tortoise who went to the vets for worm treatment but sadly died under the anasthetic (and an autopsy revealed he had liver problems which is why he never revived). and also hacving a bit of trouble with my big rat snake at the mo so i know how people feel about all this.
once again am very sorry for your loss, but if you really want another snake dont let this put you off!
