Just in the process of modding a new Viv for Marmite, its quite an upscale in size!

How does my heating solution look, sensible? over sensible or somethings that's going to explode?!

Note there isn't a light in there, just the heat mat..

Looks ok, maybe a touch on the large side, I aim for 1/3 of the viv heated, but some go up to 1/2. Is the lino over a heat mat?

The viv looks good too, I like the glass plinth at the front.

viv looks good to me. half the viv floor being covered is the max you can have so it should be ok. i have got the 6x11 for my 2 foot vivs.

other than that looks ok. you gonna run it off a mat stat???

Thanks, yup its a heat mat underneath, it covers about 2/5ths of the bottom with the lino& gaffa tape making it look a little bigger. My biggest worry is the temperature still coming through, I can hold my hand on it but after a few seconds its real hot, I'm just not sure what is normal and whats acceptable for a small corn should he lie on it? I have a smaller heat mat that I may try.

At the moment no but would you say something like a Habistat Thermostrat is essential? Wish I'd checked to Wattage before taping it down lol

Yes I'd say the mat stat was essential (especially if its that hot), I bought a brand new one off ebay last week for £20 inc delivery.

Thanks, I'll look into it, left my my Exo-Terra thermometer in the old and new set up and the new one is off the scale so its easily 40+C but then so is the old one but it feels a few C colder, need to get a proper thermometer in there. So yeah thinking a Thermostat will keep the mat temperature down.

moneymaker suggested a lamp dimmer switch as a cheap alternative to a stat, that's what I've done but you need a good thermometer in the hot end of the viv and to check it regularly.

I've got one of those too, using it in one of my vivs at the mo with a lamp and a digital thermometer, but the room they're in varies too much in temp in my opinion, I'm always fiddling with it.

Thanks, look like the best long term choice is to keep the mat in there and rig up a Habistat and place the sensor right on top of it, thanks guys :) , look forward to posting this thing up when I finally get it finished!

get a mat stat as they run up to 100w of equipment.

i got 3 6x11 and 1 11x11 inch running off mine and its fine.

6x11= 7.25w
11x11=12w

your mat will be roughly the same so will be fine

Now that I've got a matstat, I'll never look back. They're fantastic; before I fitted mine I was concerned about the surface temps of my mat, but no longer!
