Shes a carolina, and for the past week or so shes been hiding under the kitchen towels and her colours are dull and her eyes are now longer bright red which they were before. Shes still eating and drinking but im just a bit worried, she hasnt had a moult since ive had her.

I'm still only new to corn snakes Mel, but a short while before they are due to shed their skin, their colours do become quite dull and the eyes can turn a milky white. My snakes eyes go blue for a couple of days then clear up about 2 or 3 days before he sheds. Hope this helps, but like I say I am quite new to this.

Hi Mel, Welcome to the Corn Snake.co.uk.

Sounds normal to me Mel, sounds like she's ready to shed soon, the eyes should clear and then a day or two later she should shed.

For baby corn you should spray with water when they are close to a shed to aid with the shedding, it helps the skin shed whole rather than in little bits. Check to see all the skin has shed properly especially on the tip of the tail and around the eyes.

Make sure you have places to hide other than under the kitchen towel, preferably one in each end of the set up (cold and hot).

Hope this helps.

Hiya!! Thanks so much for your help! Yeah she has a little house in her viv on her heatmat, you know the ones for hamsters... and she has a sock at the cold end which she is in now. I really wanna get her a stick branch thing but cant afford one at the moment. I did actually give her a little bath yesterday which i think she quite liked.

Also wondering if it is ok to put sawdust as a substrate, the disinfected clean kind, i got some from a pet shop, the assistant said its ok for reptiles and it says it is on the packaging but i just wanna make sure.

Not too sure about the sawdust bit Mel but I'm sure Lewy or another user will know more about it. I prefer the wood chippings but I also put shavings in one corner cos my corn likes to burrow down and hide every now again.
Good idea too, giving ur corn a bath, it's good exercise for them and it also helps if they get constipated! Just be careful that she doesn't get tangled in the plug chain!

Hello

I always use warm water when bathing my snakes. Not read hot, but definately warm. They can get cold so easily. Warm water from your tap should be fine. No need for a kettle job

As for saw dust- I always thought it could be dangerous for reptiles. Better off using Aspen, because some other woods can be toxic. If in doubt though, use newspaper or kitchen roll.

I agree with Kaz (hope you dont mind me shortening the name....it helps with my one finger typing lol). I just use warm water from the tap (sometimes do the elbow test like you do when bathing a baby), and just put enough in the bath so that he can swim about. Congrats on the shedded skin too, I know what you mean about being excited. I always love it when mine sheds and the wife looks at me as if I'm mental!

I agree with Kazerella on the substrate.
I use aspen for my two snakes and find it great, my corn absolutly loves to burrow in it.
Just be careful if you feed your snake on it, don't want any aspen being ingested.

Congrats on the shed

hi, sounds like you luving it he he..

sounds like she due to shed to me, mine luv warm baths and even the 10ft pool in garden in summer!! but beware, they get a bit quick! lol
all i suggest is minimal handling till she has and always feed straight after cos they build up quite an appetite shedding.

also, u can use wood shavings (never bark!) provided you buy the reptile type which has no harmful chemicals on it, have you heard of forest bedding? i find it the best to use, it comes in a block which you soak in water till it expands then just use what u need and keep the rest for later, i find it keeps the smells away lol

thanks everyone for your help. she shed her skin tonight!!! wahey! but i missed it :( i checked her eyes and tail and its all come off in one bit. and ive just fed her aswell. ive put in one of my old sock and cut off the end of a kitchen roll tube about and inch or 2 long and put it in the sock so it keeps the top open and she LOVES it in there!!

i think ill keep off the sawdust then and stick with kitchen roll. cheaper and easier. shes exploring her house now cos i changed the kitchen roll and stuff.

Thanks again everyone xxxx

hi hope your corn is ok, try this to help your snake shed, soak a pillow case and put your snake inside secure the case and put somewhere warm over night, also don`t use saw dust, the dust particles can cause respiritry problems, beech chips are good and cheap. hope this advice helps leon

Hi everyone! I need advice about my newly purchsed corn snake. She is 5 years old and 4 foot. She hasn't eaten for two weeks since I got her and I believe she's shedding as her eyes and scales are dulling. She also smells now, is this normal? I've changed her tank lining a couple of days ago and I change her water every day.

Thanks!

I've never noticed my snakes smell before. The dulling scales and eyes do sound like she's ready for a shed, but I'd keep an eye (or nose) on the smell thing. If it gets worse, maybe a vet visit is in order
