Which substrate should I use with Cecil? I've currently got aspen in his viv. but whenever I try to get him out he just burrows underneath so I can't get to him and I've been told never to pull them back to you. Would it be better to use just cheap kitchen roll until he's more comfortable with me handling him? Scott |

Its fine to lift them directly up if they burrow. When people say not to pull them back to you they mean that you shouldnt pull them back to you in a way that can bend their scales backwards if the snake is on a surface. As long as you lift him up off any surface you can move him freely. |

I wouldn't get rid of the aspen as corn snakes love it. It would be a bit mean as the only reason is so YOU can pick up your snake. Cecil will enjoy burrowing into the aspen so this benifits him as it's sort of like enrinchment for him.

I use shredded paper from the office shredder for mine to burrow in - it's free! |

Ok I've decided to stay with the aspen for the benefit of Cecil, but how thick should it be? I've got it about 1 cm thick over his warm end and about 1.5 inchs thick over his cool end, This is where I keep losing him. Should I have less so he can still burrow but I can see where he is to get him? |

I have a tiny bit more than an inch. I like having a fair bit of substrate so henry can burrow. it depends on how big the snake is a guess. |

I found that it clumps together if it gets wet and is easily removed |

I use orchid bark for my Royal too, seems better for keeping the humidity up a bit more than for the corns.

I use about an inch of beech chips for Sophie. She burrowed at first when I moved her in, but doesn't much now that she has got used to her hides. Poops have been easy to remove. |

i use aspen for tartan when i can get it, and i use enough that it feels springy when you gently press it with your palm. i'd say it's about an inch or so :) |
