Henry has been sort of sneezing for 2 days now. she does it every now and then. she doesnt move like when we sneeze but it sounds like a scratchy noise. Also in the photos section i showed a pic of henry with a bubble of saliva on her cheeck and saddleninja suggested breathing problems. Any more information would be great - thankyou all

tell this to your vet if it is fungal pneumonia, RECOMMENDED TREATMENT. apply amphotericin B in a nebulizer at a dose of 5 milligrams in 150 milliliters of saline solution nebulized for one hour twice per day for one week.OR Fluconazole, at a dose of 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight orally once daily for two to three weeks. hope everything goes ok (dont want to sound a know it all)

The "sneezing", (snakes breath through their nostrils right?), it sounds like shes trying to breath (in or our) through her nose, and finising it hard. She makes that sort of sniffy sound.

Went to the vets today...What a waste of my bloody time. The guy didnt have a clue. This is the first time i had taken henry to the vet in the 1 1/2 months of having her, so i didn't know the guy. He claimed to know about reptiles but didnt have a clue what type of snake she was and when i told him she was a corn, he said "blimey shes big!"....shes just under 4ft. I told him about the problems and symptoms and he said it was either a lack of vitamin A, or worms. He didnt menton the possibility of dust which i thought would be his first thing.

Anyway, he went to ring this other guy about it. Came back 10 mins later and told me he would give her a shot of vit A and worming stuff. (Please comment on if this was the right thing for him to do especialy saddleninja, i didnt say what you posted earlier because i didnt want to seem like i was telling him what he should have done.) Also was there a certain spot he should have injected her? I laid her out on the table and i said "where are you goint to put it" so that i new where to hold her. He said anywhere that doesnt riggle..he was really careless about it.

After this..I wanted to know exactly what she has has so i asked for it to be printed off so i can have a copy.

it says (doing my best to replicate):

quantity-----Description
1------------ed/ex domestic animal
0.010--------ivomec 1ml inj
0.100----------multiv 1ml nbk inj

This is the bill so obviously the first one is just him looking at her. multiv must mean multivitamins but the "ivomec" must be the worming thing.

Im hoping this is ok. Hes given me a swab for poo and the discharge that ocassionaly come from her nose (he even managed to foreget to give them to me so i ran back in). I used a pillow case with a cable tie to transport her. It was mentioned on another thread and stayed in my head. This works fine to anyone needing to tansport snakes.

sorry about the rant

Edit = he also said he would give her a week and decide wether she needed antibiotics and i left this to his judgement.

i would question this vet first thing the other vet should have seen the snake, ivermectin is used to treat intestinal parasitism, mostly used for nematodes( hook, whip and round worm) but not tape and flukes which fenbendazole is recomended. so how does a telephone show you the type of worm infestation. also vitamin deficiencies normally show up as neurological problems ie seizures, tremors, incoordination, weekness, star gazing, blindness and flacid paralysis.also most vit def is vitamin B which is normally in fish eating snakes, so if your corn has a good rodent diet this should not be an issue. hope this helps

Heya Matty,
Really specialist vets are the only way to go with reptiles, any good small animal practice SHOULD direct you in the direction of a specialist rather than waste yours and their own time (having been a veterinary receptionist for a few years!). Spruce had very similar symtoms about a week after I purchased him, I took him to Matt Brash's practice just north of York, he deals with all the exotics at Flamingo Land zoo. Spruce had swabs and xrays done and was prescribed oral Baytril 2.5% (an antibiotic).
As saddleninja said, you're right that Ivomec is the wormer - it's an Ivermectin based anthelmintic. Personally I doubt either the wormer or vitamins were of much use given the symptoms you've described, but neither will do Henry any harm either.
As for the actual injection the main thing is that the needle goes in between the scales. As snakes have a lot of muscle the length of their body the specific site for giving an intra-muscular injection is huge, the main thing is that the needle doesn't go too deep and puncture anything internally.
I am fairly experienced in veterinary matters but I'm NOT a vet and I haven't seen the snake.

The origional vet i go to with my cat directed me to this place, who do some of the animals in Bristol zoo. I couldnt find a local specialist, but if she is no better i will do some more hunting. I will ring the shop that i put in the shop recomendation topic and see if he can recomend a specialist.

if you want to take a trip to cardiff there is an excellent vet on the lefthand side of the A470 heading into cardiff off M4 junction 32 ( they are often on tv prog vets)

Could be simple RI. excessive humidity & dust can cause it from substrate. Take out the water bowl for most of each day til the snake seems to stop sneezing & put the temp up to 90*F hot end temp. It could sort itself out rather than needing vet treatment. (put the water bowl in at nite).
