Hi all I have some coconut shell halves left over that were bird feeders, had like seed and lard or sumit in them. If I send them throught the dishwasher and cut a door hole in them will they be safe hides for my little snakey when i get it?? |

Yeah they will be great! My local reptile store sells the for £8 a time, so your method is a great money saver! |

After the dishwash; good idea, but mine still leaves the stuff a little soapy so best be worth a rinse with warm water and left to dry in the sun. Best to make sure [:)}
How'd you clean them, or would you need to replace them if soiled as they'd break with some scrubbing?

You could just buy a coconut for about £1 from a supermarket and scoop it out. When I've done it in the past I've then put it in the oven at 100C for a while. |

Hi cheers for the feedback. I was goion to buy a coconut and make it from scratch till I remembered about these and they have been cut in half neatly, and couldn't be bothered to try cut a whole one, I am very lazy lol
I bought the bird feeder ones from my local garden centre, cost me about £5 for a pack of 4, the birds have long since pecked them clean, so just a little recycling job
think I will wash em in dishwasher, then rinse em off & then bake them like Blackecho suggests. Better safe than sorry. Will let you know how it turns out.

Coconuts are quite strong and should be ok to be scrubbed. |

Mine has a little one that he loves to sit in and get cramped into ^^ I chose the lazy option and bought it from 88reptiles, but was only about £2.50 ;p

Well I cut them, done square entrance first, then remembered a dremel i had hiding in the garage and made nicer round opening. Then i washed them, then they went in the dishwasher which I think was a waste of time as they came out slimey, so scrubbed them in soapy water, then baked them for 45mins at 100 or so degrees, and this be the results. Not bad for basically nowt Just made 2 for now.

i made my own hides out of coconut shell but i drilled holes in the top instead of the side and for some reason she prefers that one. |
