Hey guys..

Since Jaspers been climbing around his viv a lot the past few days, I thought about giving him a couple branches.. (since he doesn't use his vine )

I came across some nice ones in my garden, ones that had been cut a few months ago and are now sitting there as firewood..
My question I, is it necessary to sand the branch down? I don't have a sander.. And doing it by hand with sand paper would take a very long time!
So if I were to just pop it into the oven for an hour or two.. Would it be safe to use in the viv?

Cheers

BE is 'the wood'

you need to strip the bark off it, that's where most of the creepy crawlies hide.

It isn't bark wood though.. It's just wood from a tree in the garden ^^
Here's a picture of one..

It's impossible to take that layer off, unless I was to really really sand it..
An impossible task! :(

Hmm, I tried to chisel it but that wood is relentless!
No way that I'll be able to use that then :P

I do have a really nice bit of wood that was given to me, and I think it was previously used in a beardies tank.
Would I need to bleach it etc?
Or disinfect/wash be enough?
It also smells a bit of the beardies too, so how would I get rid of that? - Or would that not stress the snake out?

You could just put it in the oven at 160C for a couple of hours if it'll fit.

Well, it really won't fit in the oven..
I've bathed it, and really soaked it with disinfectant.. and I poured about 5 kettle worth of boiling water :P
Will that be enough?

Read this before, since everything is water based, and water boils at 100c theyr'e "blood" will effectively boil and bloods water based. Owned.

But many bacteriums are different, your average diseace ridden woodlouse will be long dead,

Try cut it in half and bake one bit then the other, then nail them back together?

if you're happy with it spedz, then I'm sure its safe :)
Maybe try and soak each prong of it under boiling water or REALLY hot water in the sink or summat... or even jsut soaking it fora a while will let any dead beasties get out of the wood :)

Yeah, I've soaked/disinfected it several times..
Then bleached it for an hour, and have rinsed it; and is now drying.
Tomorrow I'll rinse it a few more times, and hopefully it will all be good!

Pieces that are too big for my oven go in a bath of 5/10% bleach for a few hours and then have a thorough rinse before going into the airing cupboard to dry.

Yeah, I bathed it in a bleach solution for a few hours - then rinsed, left to dry.. then bathed in normal water, and let it dry all day.
Have now put it in, and he has a packed new viv ^^

I only put the light in for the photo.. Since he can still get through the guard, I only use the mat now :)
It's gonna be a nightmare to get him out or check for poop

once you have it soaked the bark should come off, i just use a kitchen knife to get under the first bit and the rest comes off easy enough...

Wolf - It was completely impossible to get it off, so I gave up.
I remembered I had the other really nice log, have bleached it (Using citrus bleach, poured a little into the bath) let it to dry and is now in there.

In on the right hand side of the photo, if you can make it out ;p
