I hope i`m not teaching my gran to suck eggs here but i`ve learned something which helps me immensly with Jake my 8 mth old corn and i hope it might help someone else too. 2 days after feeding him i give him a luke warm bath which he loves but after 3 or 4 minutes he will wee and poo like a good`un. I take him straight out of the bath when he`s done it so he can`t swallow any of the bath water and i also think that the extra hydration this gives helps him to shed when he needs to. Doing this makes sure he doesn`t mess his viv or better still me when i`m handling him, which he did do regularly.

Let me know how it goes. I never have to scoop poop out of his viv cause he always does it in the bath. Good luck.

Hey Jazzy, bathing your corn will make him go to the toilet, like said above lol
fill the bath a little way up (don't worry, he wont drown) with warm water, not hot.
Gently hold him and lower him into the water, you don't want to scare him by just dropping him in.
He may go a bit crazy at first but should calm down after a while.
Make sure your watching him all the time though.
Oh and dont fill the bath far enough for him to reach the bit that draines water out (if you know what i mean :S )

I agree with what bluetonguedan said, i use about 2-3 inches of water that is just mildly warm and gently lower him in, he may not like it at first but will soon get use to it and grow to love it. sometimes mine just likes to lay and soak or sometimes goes for a swim up and down. Important though is to always watch him because a big snake may be able to get out on its own, obviously only use water without any detergents and clean the bath before and after use. Also, another tip get a new bath plug and use it just for the snake so he can`t climb up the chain of the usual one.

they could be scared snakes tend to poo when they are scared, dont get me wrong i bath my snakes and it doesnt do them any direct harm, but tend to only do it when they have poo on them. i do put tubs big enough for my snakes to get into in there vivs on occasion the pythons tend to use them now and again but not really the corns?
just another perspective to think about.
also theres no way when you keep a cornsnake on substrate that you see all the poo and urinates ever wonder what all that white dust is when you do a compleate viv change.

Since posting this i have now obtained a further two corns taking my total to three. My original snake swims from one end of the bath to the other very sedately never tries to get out and after a few minutes lies still, as a soak then wee`s and poo`s. One of my new ones swam quite erratically at first then calmed down had a soak and then did his business in the shallow end however my third snake went crazy after his first bath and tried climbing the bath walls and never calmed down and didn`t poo so i took him out and returned him to his viv.
All i`m saying is all corn`s are different and as unique as humans and what works with some doesn`t with others.

i agree completly with what you are saying and as ive said i do bath my snakes but we dont really know weather they are liking it or tolerating it.
there must be a reason they poo in it?

i just wish we could know, some do seem to really enjoy it and there are benfits for snakes like bathing for health, skin issues and exercise but i also think its interesting to contemplate what makes our corns tick and when, why, what could be the reasons for
it all helps for a fuller understanding of beloved corns

yes Ros i see what your saying, just because something works for us doesn`t mean they like it.
They certainly wouldn`t have a warm bath in the wild. Studying animal behaviour is a difficult task, if only they could talk.
By the way, hows the pregnancy and are you sleeping any better?

all seems fine with the pregnancy, thanks for asking sleeping a little better but i havent been able to get hold of lavender oil yet.
im a little worried now about how many hatchlings there might be this year with a new baby and all but im sure ill work it out. last year we had a real bad breeding year with just around 20 hatchling out of some like 13 pairings this we have pair 17 and so far there are 83 good eggs incubating 3 corns due to lay in the next 2 weeks at least 2 more after that and at least 1 maybe more python clutch to come. so its going to be real fun around here.

baby snakes, and baby people, excellent.
We have not long had my step-daughter move in with us, and she's expecting her third the next 2-3 weeks. How long have you got left?

15 weeks to go, good luck.
Thankfully it's not that hot at the moment, the ex wife was carrying all of ours during the summer, when summers actually used to be hot, and she used to say how bad that was.
Have you got your incubator ready for it (boy or girl or don't you know)?
Out of curiosity, is this the first? or do you have a multitude of offspring already?
